Woman's pet birds eradicated USDA gets court order to gas poultry in fight against virus By FRANK CURRERI
REVIEW-JOURNAL

When the federal government wanted to kill dozens of Jill Duncan's pet birds, she put up a fight. Now she is left to ponder just how quickly she was defeated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Trying to thwart a potential poultry crisis, USDA workers arrived at Duncan's home on Saturday afternoon with a court order and fatally gassed 64 of her domesticated chickens, ducks and geese, she said. "I still have a pig," said the 56-year-old, who lives in an area east of North Las Vegas, where USDA officials have euthanized 1,535 domesticated birds in recent weeks. "But I feel awful. I'll never be the same." The USDA has euthanized the domesticated birds, agency officials have said, after discovering birds that were infected with the deadly Exotic Newcastle virus on numerous properties in Duncan's neighborhood. The virus is not harmful to humans but has ravaged poultry industry sales in the past. Duncan said none of her animals appeared to be sick. She said the agency declined to test the animals for the disease because it would have been too costly. She was the only one of 82 owners to challenge USDA officials to get a court order for their mission.

'Fowl' Fumes: Odors Can Harm Pet Birds
COLLEGE STATION The family cat may not be the only thing threatening your Tweety bird.
Your home may actually have hidden dangers that can prove fatal for pet birds, and from an unlikely source - harmful fumes. Nonstick cookware is just one of the many commonly used products that may threaten your bird's life.
"When heated to very high temperatures, the nonstick coating on cookware, irons, bread makers and other appliances emits fumes that are fatal to birds," said Johnson.
"These fumes are odorless and harmless to humans but can cause a bird's lungs to hemorrhage within minutes. Bird owners are advised to avoid using nonstick cookware to avoid harming their birds."
If you do use nonstick cookware, be careful not to allow the pans to scorch. If they do overheat, quickly remove the bird from the house and ventilate the house thoroughly before returning your bird indoors, Johnson advises. The same is true for other harmful fumes.
Smoke, paint, household cleaners, pesticides and any other solvents can be dangerous to birds. Pet owners should remove their birds from any areas where these products are being used or even remove the birds from the house altogether until the fumes have dissipated, Johnson adds.

Introduction
Y ou think your favorite pet bird is sick. Your first thought is to run to the pet store to get some "medicine." After you get there, you ask the clerk what to do and you are steered to a shelf with many "remedies" labeled for pet birds. You may wonder, what's the story with these store bought "remedies?" Are any of them effective? Do they do anything at all, or should you call a veterinarian? I n this brief article, I will address these questions and also discuss how animal drugs are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
Background
A ll products considered "drugs" for man and animals are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA). This Act and the accompanying regulations were placed into law in order to control the quality, safety and effectiveness of drugs used in man and animals and to try to eliminate the quackery and dangerous patent medicines that were rampant years ago. One of the FDA centers is the Center for Veterinary Medicine, which is responsible for administering the laws that apply to animal drugs and devices. That includes drugs for pets and the huge market of drugs, devices and medicated feed additives for food animals like cows and chickens.

Fixit reads all mail, but because of the volume she can't supply individual replies. Are cooking fumes dangerous for pet birds? Karen Youso, Fixit Editor Published February 26, 2003 Q I heard that cooking with nonstick pots and pans releases invisible, odorless fumes that kill pet birds. Is that true? If so, what do these fumes do to people? Their extremely efficient respiratory systems make them far more susceptible to air-borne contaminants than humans are. The contaminants include fumes from cookware as well as heated cooking oils, breadmakers and clothes irons. Smoke, paint fumes and cleaning solvents also pose a danger for birds, veterinarians say. For humans, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health regulatory agencies worldwide say cookware coated with nonstick coatings is safe and acceptable for conventional kitchen use. The FDA position is based on laboratory tests in which Teflon pans were abused by overheating for four hours at nearly 500 degrees (any food would have long been burned to an inedible state at this point), according to Julie Miller Jones, a professor of foods and nutrition at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul.

    http://shell.pubnix.net/~mhagen/docu/b_disord.html
    FEATHER DISORDERS IN PET BIRDS
  • Overgrooming, feather chewing and feather plucking are common and complex problems with many possible causes, both physical and emotional. Some birds with this disorder never demonstrate it in front of the owner; others are unable to stop even when transported or examined.
  • Medical problems that may have started the problem or continue to contribute to it include skin infections (bacteria, viruses, fungi, mites) and other diseases such as hormone imbalances, allergies and cancer. Most of these causes are rare. We are frequently asked about mites and lice but both are extremely unusual. The only common mite infections occur on parakeets and canaries and they do not cause feather loss.
  • Poor nutrition often makes both physical and emotional problems worse. Supplements, formulated diets, and labour intensive foods such as whole fruits, millet sprays, honey sticks and safflower based diets are often recommended.
  • Stresses apart from poor nutrition may include environmental factors such as humidity too low, temperature too cold, inappropriate cage, inappropriate location and uninteresting or uncomfortable perches. A lack of mate or flock, and a fear of certain humans or pets may also be present but difficult to detect.
    Common psychological stressors include:
    • SEPARATION ANXIETY
Some hand-raised birds identify so closely with their human owners that they give them the role of mate substitute, or the family becomes a substitute flock. These birds rarely pick in front of the owners, but will often become excited when left alone, hanging on to the bars and calling. Picking may then occur as frustration and anxiety deepen. In the wild, a member of the flock would not normally be separated from the other birds.
