Spanish and African traditions and beliefs have been added to ancient skills and religions. The resulting Mestiza Tradition is charged with mysticism and color.
Art was always dedicated to all objects made by hand like textiles, ceramic and metalwork. Cultures like Chavín, Wari or the Inkas introduced the stonework and the military-urban planning. With the arrival of Spanish conquerors, urban design refined and included big mansions and religious buildings with the use of high towers, curved and decorated ceilings, balconies and baroque porches and arcades.
Among the most popular handicrafts are exquisite gold and silver jewelry, finely knitted alpaca and pima cotton sweaters, decorative wool tapestries, ponchos and woven belts in different regional styles, diverse ceramics, carved wooden objects, gourds with popular designs, reproductions of colonial mirrors and candelabras.
Local markets are the most interesting and picturesque places to purchase handicrafts. Bargaining is possible in the markets and fairs. You have to be careful when buying original old ceramic or paintings because export of these items is illegal.

Northern Peru Archaeology
The archaeology of Northern Peru is at least as interesting as archaeology in the Cusco area of southern Peru
Peru is a huge country, full of ancient empires, with the rise and fall of spectacular kingdoms throughout the ages. The Incas were the last era before Columbus, so their gold and empire was recorded and made famous to Europeans. Today 99% of Peru’s tourists go ONLY to the half of Peru south of Lima. Peru’s north half is about half the size of Western Europe, and void of crowds, yet it contains the most ruins and the highest level of Americas’ past civilizations. Pyramids on the north coast of Peru
Peru’s coast is the world’s driest desert with the richest soil, where rivers from the Andes irrigated gigantic valleys in the past. The north coast is an exact copy of Egypt’s environment. The Lambayeque Valley has 260 pyramids and was ruled by kings like Pharaohs. Chachapoya culture and archaeology, the Kuelap fortress, sarcophagus, mummies, ruins
Now directly inland and high on the Andes Amazon slopes, the Chachapoyans built fortified walled citadels and round stone houses on almost every peak. Kuelap , the largest citadel discovered to date, is the largest building structure in the Americas and is calculated to have three times more material than Egypt’s largest pyramid. Kuelap has 5 levels of walls inside of walls, ranging up to 20 meters high, and over 400 stone buildings in the top 3 levels.

W ell, the name of this page is "The Peru-Texas Connection." You have already been introduced to a quick look of history, geography and other subjects. Now I am going to describe some similarities and dissimilarities, between the Peruvian culture and the Texan culture. I think that after living over 20 years in Texas and adopted it as my state, and particularly Houston as my new hometown, I have the knowledge to talk about this. However, it is not my intention to comment on which one is good and the other bad. It would be a mistake to make comparisons. All that I want is to examine and describe with the only purpose that this may help somebody to better understand both of these cultures. Whether a Peruvian goes to Texas or a Texan goes to Peru, this person is going to be exposed to one of these two cultures. The more that you know about it the easier for you to understand the other culture, and to accept it. Sports: USA invented a lot of sports, that are practiced worldwide such as basketball. Baseball that has its origins also in USA is played in several countries but not like basketball. Peru virtually didn't invent any sport; but there is one that glues together everybody and that sport is soccer.

Plasticized Peru Plastic Culture Threatens to Destroy Land of Inefficient Charm
By Andres T. Tapia Date: 05-12-98 For a Peruvian now living in the United States, a trip home offers both a chance to escape a privileged but superficial culture, and to return to a land of extremes. But in a recent visit Andres T. Tapia found signs the differences are narrowing. PNS associate editor Andres T. Tapia writes regularly on Peru. LIMA, PERU One privilege of growing up middle class in Lima, Peru was the occasional pilgrimage to the United States the country that not only had Disneyland but was Disneyland. A Big Mac and a smile in less than a minute was a marvel for someone from a country where the most basic dishes take two to three hours to prepare. And no trip was complete without a stop at the temples of Macy's and Saks, sanctuaries with perfect artificial weather and a numbing quantity of leisure products to worship. But the special allure of the Big Mac and the Magic Kingdom came from the fact that we did not have them. To us, these were the icons of a bold theology that claimed the pursuit of happiness as a right. In Peru, we would have settled for freedom of the press. But now Lima, in the name of economic revitalization, is being Disneyfied and it's killing our culture. On a recent visit, I saw those golden arches, the white-bearded Colonel's smile, Pizza Hut's logo and Blockbuster posters everywhere I turned.

Tomb of "Giants" Unearthed in Peru Jennifer Mapes
National Geographic News
(February 15, 2001) Archaeologists have unearthed a series of tombs rich with treasures of an extinct Peruvian culture. The 1,500-year-old graves held five unusually tall young men surrounded by textiles, ceramics, llama skeletons, and decorative metal works. The remains are Moche, a culture that thrived on the desert-like coast of northern Peru between A.D. 100 and 800. A farming and fishing community, they constructed irrigation canals, pyramids, palaces, and temples. The origins of the Moche remain unknown, according to lead archaeologist Christopher Donnan. The skeletons, found during a 1997-99 National Geographic-funded expedition, may yield clues to their culture.
Archaeologist Christopher Donnan examines a male skeleton at the Peru burial site. The skeleton showed abnormalities that may indicate that the man suffered from a disease similar to Marfan syndrome, a genetic bone disorder.

CONOPA STONE IMAGES
INCA CULTURE-PERU
PRIVATE COLLECTION This article illustrates and describes a small collection of llama and alpaca Inca culture stone images called conopas. Conopas are devotional objects that have cavities carved into their backs where offerings of llama fat and coca leaves are placed. Before the Spanish conquest and even to this day, these stone figurines are charged with protecting the house and bringing good luck and prosperity to the people living there. The conopas in this article were borrowed from three private collections and all seem to be early examples that were made before European contact. "The (Spanish) priests confiscated 3,418 conopas in some 31 settlements in the Archbishopric of Lima alone". -Spanish occupation in the years between 1617-18.

  • Peru has perhaps the richest history of any Latin American country, and none of Peru's historical sites boast more history and culture than Cuzco.
The city of Cuzco, located in the stunning valley of the Huatanay, has been an important urban, administrative, religious, and military center for millennia. Cuzco was the capital of the ancient Andean State of Tawantinsuyo , and later one of the first major Spanish colonial cities in the Americas.
Today Cuzco is a UNESCO Cultural Patrimony of Humanity Sit e and is considered the archaeological capital of South America. Moreover, hidden in the Andes just a few hours east of the ancient Inca walls and colonial gems of Cuzco is the legendary Inca city of Machu Pichu.
