Producers and Writers: Bill Bennett, Jennifer Bennett
Director of Photography: Danny Ruhlmann Rufus Sewell: Mick
Martin Donovan: Dr Philip Spence
Maya Stange: Evelyn Spence
Marshall Napier: Geoffrey Hallerton

"In a Savage Land" is described as a love story, but it becomes much more than that, particularly on reflection after having seen the film. It is set, and was shot on the Trobiand Islands of Papau New Guinea, and headed towards it are two newly wed anthropologists, one an acclaimed academic, the other a masters graduate with no practical experience. It is the late 1930's and the couple Dr Philip Spence and Evelyn Spence (played by Martin Donovan and Maya Stange) are hoping to follow up the work of renowned anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski, investigating the sexual lives of the savages on the island. Evelyn soon realises that her brilliant husband only requires her for typing his notes, and frustrated she begins research work of her own, talking with the women who play a key role in the society that she feels her husband is ignoring. Adding to the friction of their relationship are the boundaries of custom, as well as the interference of the colonial chief Sir Geoffrey Hallerton, played by Marshall Napier, and the island missionary trying to civilise the island - Reverend Ian McGregor (John Howard).

OUR MISSION IS TO TRAIN AND SERVE
Luke Medical Foundation was established in 1988 as a Christian Ministry to provide scholarships for the training of doctors, nurses, and public health workers to help people like Pablo and his family. The need for Christian doctors and other health care workers in poverty stricken areas was well known and the world was witnessing almost daily the pictures of diseased and starving people. Jesus changed many lives and drew men to Him through healing. We believe that medical missions are an important opportunity for sharing Christ's love with people. It is our goal to meet the spiritual, physical, and emotional needs of persons who are often neglected because of poverty and circumstances outside of their control. The purpose of the Luke Medical Foundation is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ in underprivileged areas of the world through medical missionary service. After much prayer and preparation they decided to study medicine in Mexico where they could learn a new language and culture as well as be involved in medical service as they studied. They chose to attend the University of Montemorelos in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, because of its history in medical missions training and its exchange program of teachers from Loma Linda University.

    Introduction
Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) is identified by the plaques of mutated amyloid protein that form within the brain tissue and destroy synapses and neurotransmitter functions and take on a characteristic sponge or Swiss cheese appearance. CJD, Scrapie and Kuru are all members of this degenerative disease family, afflictions known about for over two hundred years but not studied intently until the early sixties when they were found to be transmissible.
    Bastian's work
Another tenacious TSE researcher is Dr. Frank O. Bastian, MD, a professor of pathology and director of neuropathology at the University of South Alabama, Mobile. He has published numerous research articles relating to the etiology of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and also edited a book entitled Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and Other Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies. (2) In 1976,Bastian examined a brain biopsy from a patient with CJD using electron microscopy. He saw a spiral structure foreign to the tissue. It had features of the newly reported spiroplasmas (Spiroplasmas were only discovered in 1976). In 1981, a team in New York reported finding a fibril protein in scrapie-infected brain tissue. This scrapie-associated fibril (SAF) protein was 4 nm in diameter and 200 nm long. In 1983, the team looked at various tissues of CJD and Kuru and demonstrated scrapie-associated fibrils consistently in these diseases but not in control tissues. These SAF were identical morphologically to the internal fibrils of spiroplasmas.

While I've got your attention let me share with you an amusing conjuncture of events. Tuesday morning I was on a radio show called "Lowell Ponte Live," a nationally-syndicated program. Lowell told me about a magazine that was published out of Santa Barbara, CA in the 1970s, also entitled SKEPTIC, but long since out of business. I asked him to send me an issue. He did. It was the May/June, 1974 issue, with a special theme on, are you ready for this? IMPEACHMENT! It featured articles by Eugene JcCarthy, I.F. Sone, William F. Buckley, Clare Boothe Luce, George McGovern, George Will, and Lowell Ponte. The cover statements included: "Should the President be Impeached?" "Understanding Impeachment." and "What Impeachment Could Mean for America." Good timing, uh?!

Assuming that the shamen has actual skills and knowledge to pass on, why should they be any different? BOUGAINVILLE'S STRUGGLE AGAINST ECOLOGICAL DESTRUCTION
Bougainville is a small island in the South Pacific, northeast of
Australia, whose residents are currently waging a struggle against
    imperialism and ecological destruction.
Before imperial domination the island had no formal government. It
was first invaded by imperialists in 1898 when Germany took control of
the island. Bougainville changed hands several times during this
century. In 1914 the Australian military took hold of the island the, Bougainville remained in their clutches until 1942 when the Japanese forced them out. The islanders at first welcomed the Japanese, seeing in them an alternative to the European outsiders. Like most nations
