We will now proceed to evaluate how the first three criteria mentioned in the previous file are fulfilled by a pantheistic view of life. The classic example of pantheist philosophy was stated by the Upanishads (7th to 5th century BC) and then developed by the Hindu philosopher Shankara to become the well-known Advaita Vedanta philosophy.
1) Internal consistency of Hindu pantheism
As mentioned in a previous file on the Vedantic view on liberation , it is claimed that the unity atman -Brahman is perfectly attained during the last level of meditation, called turiya . The Mandukya Upanishad (12), considered by Shankara to express the quintessence of Vedanta philosophy, ends with the following verse:
    The fourth state has cognizance of neither what is inside nor what is outside, nor of both together: it is not a mass of wisdom, it is not wise nor yet unwise. It is unseen; there can be no commerce with it; it is impalpable, has no characteristics, unthinkable; it cannot be designated. Its essence is its firm conviction of the oneness of itself; it causes the phenomenal world to cease; it is tranquil and mild, devoid of duality. Such do they consider this fourth to be. He is the Self; he it is who should be known. (Translated by R.C. Zaehner, in Mysticism - Sacred and Profane, p. 154)
This passage emphasizes the necessity for transcending any duality in order to know Brahman (the Self). However, there is a logical contradiction between these two elements. When transcending any duality, nothing can be known anymore, because the elementary duality between knower (subject) and known (object) is obliterated.     Pantheism is an ancient religion that holds everything in the universe sacred. All of nature's creations are divine, interconnected and each is a god. The whole is also what we call a god, not a supernatural entity but a living, throbbing mass of gods. The whole cannot be divine if each of its counterparts are not also sacred.
    Most Pantheists believe in the duality of nature: positive/negative, good/bad, yin/yang ... and aim for balance in their lives. Because there are many paths to enlightenment and unity with the divine universe, there are also many companion beliefs and practices associated with Pantheism via its followers. As in many other religions, all things are permissable but not all things are beneficial. Again, balance is the key concept by which we guide our lives.
    Equally important is the need for each of us to accept total responsability for our actions and the condition of our universe. Doing the right thing when it needs to be done, defending those who cannot defend themselves, and caring for our earth as if she were sacred ... being responsible and aware, balanced and in harmony with nature, reverent of all the other gods who share our universe.

Naturalistic Pantheism and Global, Naturalistic Perfectionism It might appear that our conclusion is that human life lacks a religious meaning but possesses an ethical meaning. But our negative conclusion is merely that it lacks a monotheistic religious meaning. This conclusion is consistent with the thesis that the religious meaning of human life is described by a naturalistic pantheism. According to naturalistic pantheism, everything (“pan” = all) is holy. “Holiness” has a different sense in naturalistic pantheism than it does in mono theism. According to monotheism, holiness implies supernatural purity and maxi mal metaphysical greatness: perfect goodness, omniscience, omnipotence, eternality. This is the fundamental sense of holiness for monotheism. The derivative sense of “holy” in monotheism applies to people and places (holy man, holy ground) which stand in a certain relation to the being that has fundamental holiness. Naturalistic pantheism, which involves a type of religious attitude different from that of monotheism, implies that all is holy. Because all things include the bad as well as the good, “holiness” does not mean what it does in monotheism.     Pantheism
    General Information Pantheism is the belief that everything is divine, that God is not separate from but totally identified with the world, and that God does not possess personality or transcendence. Pantheism generally can be traced to two sources. The first is the Vedic tradition (Hinduism), which begins with the belief that the divine principle from which everything arises is a unity and that the perception of multiplicity is illusory and unreal. In the Vedanta, Brahman is the infinite reality behind the illusory and imperfect world of perception. Our knowledge is imperfect because we experience subject and object as distinct. When subject and object are equated, however, all distinctions are eliminated and we know Brahman. In the Western tradition the cosmology of the Stoics and, more importantly, the emanationist hierarchy of Neoplatonism tend toward pantheism. In Judeo - Christian thought the emphasis on the transcendence of God inhibits pantheism. Nevertheless, a form of pantheism is found in the thought of the medieval scholastic John Scotus Erigena, who viewed the universe as a single, all - inclusive system with various simultaneous stages. The most important modern version of pantheism is that of Baruch Spinoza. For him nature is infinite, but because the only being capable of genuine infinity is God, God must be identical, in essence, with nature. In the 18th and 19th centuries the various forms of Idealism sometimes tended toward pantheism, often in the form of a theory of cosmic evolution.

    Pantheism is the doctrine that the universe conceived of as a whole is God and, conversely, that there is no God but the combined substance, forces, and laws that are manifested in the existing universe. The cognate doctrine of panentheism asserts that God includes the universe as a part though not the whole of his being. The adjective pantheist was coined by the rationalist freethinker John Toland in his book Socinianism Truly Stated (1705). The noun pantheism was first used a few years later by one of Toland's opponents. K.C.F. Krause introduced the term panentheism in 1828 as a designation for his own philosophy. Both of these terms have been applied retrospectively to aspects of numerous philosophical traditions, both Eastern and Western. There are several discernible types of pantheism, ranging from those that attribute consciousness to nature as a whole (panpsychism) to those that interpret the world as merely an appearance and ultimately unreal (acosmic pantheism), and from the rational Neoplatonic, or emanationistic, strain to the intuitive, mystical strain. A mingling of these types characterizes Hindu and Buddhist doctrines; pantheism of one form or another is deeply rooted in the Vedas, the Upanisads, and the Bhagavadgita. Numerous Greek philosophers, notably Xenophanes, Heracleitus, Anaxagoras, Plato, Plotinus, and the proponents of Stoicism, contributed to the foundations of Western pantheism.

The concept that God is immanent in all things is one of the oldest intuitions found in humankind. However, pantheism never developed into a formal doctrine. The earliest evidence of pantheism is found on Brahmanism, the oldest existing religion, in the Vedas, dating back to 1000 BC. It is associated with the Egyptian religion when Ra Isis and Osiris were identified with all existence. Many philosophical scholars think the great Greek philosopher Parmanides was a pantheist as well as Plotinus, Erigen, and Spinoza. The sentiment or belief in pantheism have predominantly influenced the thoughts and works of many poets, philosophers, mystics, and extremely spiritual people. Notably among pantheistic poets are Goethe, Coleridge, Wordsworth and Emerson. Many modern poets consider pantheism existing in their world-view. A.G.H.

The Tao te Ching is the oldest scripture of Taoism. It was composed during the warring states period when China descended into a chaos of rival kingdoms, some time between the sixth and the fourth or third centuries BC. It was supposedly written by Lao Tan, a possibly mythical figure, said to have lived till he was 160 or 200 years old. The classical Chinese historian Ssuma Chien says the work was by Li Erh, a custodian of imperial archives from the state of Ch'u in southern China, in the present province of Honan. This was a fertile, well-watered state. "Its people make little exertion, delight in life, and neglect to store anything." Li Erh was no seeker after fame. "The chief aim of his studies was how to keep himself concealed and remain unknown." says Ssuma Chien. Li Erh wrote his ideas only because, as he was heading into retirement, the royal gatekeeper pleaded with him to record his ideas before he disappeared into oblivion. He may have written the book under the pseudonym Lao Tan to avoid attention.

    The cosmos is divine.
    The earth is sacred
    When we say the cosmos is divine, we mean it with just as much conviction, emotion and commitment as believers when they say that their god is God.
    But we are not making a vague statement about an invisible being who is beyond proof or disproof. We are talking about our own emotional responses to the real universe and the natural earth.     Pantheism does not require any particular rituals, though one can have them if desired.     The Shape of the Next Religion Douglas Muder Go to a non-hypertext version of this essay. Modern America, like Rome at the time of Christ, is in a period of rising secularism and religious chaos. Christianity has lost the power to shape our culture, and no rival religion or philosophy seems able to take its place. I argue that this period of tension will end as the Roman one didwith the advent of a new religion that will synthesize the best features of our current religions into a whole greater than the sum of its parts.     The Athenian citizens who gathered on Mars Hill to listen to Paul talk about "the unknown God" had little reason to be optimistic about the future of religion. Or rather, they had little reason to be optimistic about the future of any of the religions they knew about. Neither do we. But does that mean that there will never again be a dominant religion?     Almost all of the religions currently contending for dominance in America can be placed in one of the following four categories: historical monotheism, Scientism, Eastern religions, and Earth-centered religions.
