Weight training, calcium, hormones the key to fighting osteoporosis
Weight training is one of the weapons to fight osteoporosis
November 6, 1998
Web posted at: 1:24 p.m. EDT (1724 GMT) TUCSON, Arizona (CNN) Researchers at the University of Arizona are looking for new ways to increase bone density in women. Early results show that combining strength training with hormone-replacement therapy and calcium supplements helps to strengthen bones. "Our exercise training program is a rigorous resistance program with weight-bearing aerobic activity combined with exercises for strength and balance," said researcher Linda Houtkooper Study participant Mary Ornelia, 60, said she knows she is at risk of developing osteoporosis. ALSO: Doctors get osteoporosis guidelines "I was having hip pain and went for x-rays and all of this," she said. "And now for two and a half years, I haven't been bothered at all."

The Osteoporosis Healthcare Network What Is Osteoporosis:
  • Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones are fragile and more likely to break.
Fractures can be devastating by resulting in pain, hospitalization and loss of independence. Spine fractures in particular can lead to pain, loss of height and deformity leading to stooped posture which can cause anxiety, low self-esteem and like other fractures: loss of mobility, which can cause loss of independence.
It is never too early or too late to take positive steps in regard to your bone health to prevent and treat Osteoporosis and thus decrease to incidence of often life altering broken bones.
Steps to have healthier, stronger bones include medical evaluation, proper nutrition including adequate calcium and vitamin D, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle which includes limited alcohol intake, no smoking and home safety measures.

Risk factors for developing osteoporosis
The following factors can increase the chances of developing osteoporosis:
  • family history of osteoporosis menopause removal of the ovaries without ongoing replacement of estrogen being caucasian or oriental, as opposed to black immobility or infrequent exercise smoking a diet low in calcium daily alcohol consumption taking corticosteroid medications (steroids) abnormally high levels of natural steriods in the body (Cushing's syndrome)
Symptoms of osteoporosis Many people are unaware of that fact that they have osteoporosis because it causes few symptoms until a broken bone (fracture) occurs. In many cases the amount of force that caused the bone to break would not normally have caused a fracture. Common fracture sites for people with osteoporosis include:
  • the wrist the top of the thigh bone the bones in the spinal column (called vertebrae).
Gradual crumbling of the bones in the spine can also occur over time and chronic back pain and/or pain in the nerves running down the arms or legs ( sciatica ) can result.

FDA APPROVES TERIPARATIDE TO TREAT OSTEOPOROSIS
FDA has approved teriparatide for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women who are at high risk for having a fracture. The drug is also approved to increase bone mass in men with primary or hypogonadal osteoporosis who are at high risk for fracture. An estimated 10 million Americans - 80 percent of them women - suffer from osteoporosis, a progressive thinning of bones that may lead to an increased risk of spine, wrist, and hip fractures. Teriparatide is the first approved agent for the treatment of osteoporosis that stimulates new bone formation. Teriparatide is administered by injection once a day in the thigh or abdomen. The recommended dose is 20 mcg per day. Teriparatide is a portion of human parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is the primary regulator of calcium and phosphate metabolism in bones. Daily injections of teriparatide stimulate new bone formation leading to increased bone mineral density.

http://www.nia.nih.gov/health/agepages/osteo.htm
Osteoporosis: The Bone Thief Helen grew up on a farm in the Midwest. She drank lots of milk as a child. She also walked a lot, but not after high school. That was when she became a secretary in a local law office. Then she never found time to exercise. Helen went through menopause at age 47. At age 61, she was looking forward to retirement — traveling and working in her garden. But then she slipped on a small rug in her kitchen and broke her hip. After Helen recovered, getting around was a lot more difficult — she needed a cane to walk. Helen had osteoporosis, but she didn’t know it. Osteoporosis is a disease that thins and weakens bones to the point where they break easily — especially bones in the hip, backbone (spine), and wrist. Osteoporosis is called the “silent disease” — you may not notice any changes until a bone breaks. But your bones have been losing strength over many years. Bone is living tissue. To keep bones strong, the body is always breaking down old bone and replacing it with new tissue. As people enter their forties and fifties, more bone is broken down than is replaced. A close look at the inside of bone would show something that looks like a honeycomb. When you have osteoporosis, the spaces in this honeycomb grow larger. The outer shell of your bones also gets thinner. All this makes your bones weaker. Who Gets Osteoporosis?
