W hat is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial osteopathy has many similarities with the oldest known method of healing, the laying on of hands. The osteopath combines healing intention with a knowledge of anatomy, using the hands to "listen" for restrictions or strains in the body. Although the name implies head manipulation, the techniques are used to treat the whole body. Why Call it Cranial Partly for historical reasons. Dr Sutherland, who was the first teacher of cranial osteopathy, devised a system of correcting cranial bone restrictions using manipulation. He tested many of his early theories on his own head, keeping detailed records of the symptoms that came and went when he created, then removed, a variety of cranial bone restrictions. He experienced symptoms such as depression and severe head and jaw pain that were a direct cause of the restrictions he created.
What About the Rest of the Body
Although originally the focus was on the bones of the skull, it soon became obvious that other parts of the body were involved, in particular the sacrum. The sacrum is the bone that joins your spine to your pelvis. If the pelvis is twisted, tilted or unbalanced it will have an effect through the sacrum and its attachments all the way up the spine and into the base of the cranium.

Site Map A BOUT OSTEOPATHY Introduction Osteopathy was founded by Dr Andrew Still, a medical practitioner of Baldwin, Kansas, USA in 1874. The first school of osteopathy was chartered in Missouri in 1892. Medical knowledge was, of course, at that time very limited. With increasing medical knowledge the whole practice of medicine has radically changed and, inevitably the practice of osteopathy has been modified; yet the basic ideas enunciated by Still remain valid. Wide Scope of Application The most frequent visitors to osteopaths are patients suffering from what are commonly called "back troubles". These conditions usually respond to treatment whether the condition is of recent origin or long standing. Patients who have almost despaired of being free from pain are frequently surprised to find themselves quite well after only a few treatments. Many who have had to wear surgical supports soon find they can do without them. The widespread incidence of back pain and the success of osteopathy in providing quick relief in many cases has led to the osteopath often being regarded as "the man who fixes backs". However the scope of osteopathy extends far beyond treating such conditions and patients new to this therapy are often surprised to find out how much the osteopath can do for them. Although much of an osteopaths work is concerned with diagnosing and correcting osteopathic lesions in the spinal column, his skill is in no way limited to spinal adjustments. Injuries and other painful conditions of joints anywhere in the body often respond more quickly and more successfully to osteopathy than any other form of treatment. Muscular aches and pains, including those usually referred to as "rheumatism" are among the most common conditions treated by osteopaths. Many other ailments are also responsive to osteopathic treatment.

http://www.cranial.org.uk/page2.html
Cranial Osteopathy
Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment which works with the structure and function of the body.
The maintenance of good mechanical function is essential to good health. Problems in the framework of the body can disturb the circulatory system or nerves to any part of the body, and affect any aspect of health.
Osteopaths work to restore the structure and function of the body to a state of balance and harmony, so helping the whole person.
What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body, including the head.
It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach and may be used in a wide range of conditions for people of all ages, from birth to old age.
Osteopaths may have different specialities including sports injuries, paediatrics, and visceral osteopathy (treating the internal organs of the body). Cranial osteopathy embraces all of these.
lnvoluntary Motion- The Cranial Rhythm
Tension in the body disrupts the cranial rhythm. Practitioners compare what your rhythm is doing to what they consider ideal. This shows them what stresses and strains your body is under at present, and what tensions it may be carrying as a result of its past history. It also gives them an insight into the overall condition of your body, for example if it is healthy, or stressed and tired.

Dubious Aspects of Osteopathy
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Osteopathic physicians (DOs) are the legal equivalents and, in most cases, are the professional equivalents of medical doctors. Although most DOs offer competent care, the percentage involved in dubious practices appears to be higher than that of medical doctors. For this reason, before deciding whether to use the services of a DO it is useful to understand osteopathy's history and the practical significance of its philosophy. Cultist Roots Andrew Taylor Still, MD (1828-1917) originally expressed the principles of osteopathy in 1874, when medical science was in its infancy. A medical doctor, Still believed that diseases were caused by mechanical interference with nerve and blood supply and were curable by manipulation of "deranged, displaced bones, nerves, muscles removing all obstructions thereby setting the machinery of life moving." His autobiography states that he could "shake a child and stop scarlet fever, croup, diphtheria, and cure whooping cough in three days by a wring of its neck." [1] Still was antagonistic toward the drug practices of his day and regarded surgery as a last resort. Rejected as a cultist by organized medicine, he founded the first osteopathic medical school in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1892.

What is a doctor of osteopathy
If you are like most people, you probably don't know the difference between a medical doctor,M.D., and an osteopathic doctor, D.O.. They really are alike in many ways. bodyOffer(424) Applicants to both D.O. and M.D. medical colleges typically have a four-year undergraduate degree with emphasis on scientific courses. Both complete four years of basic medical education. After medical school, they can choose to practice in a specialty area of medicine, then complete a residency program, which can range from 2 to 6 years They both must pass a state licensing examination. D.O.s can perform surgery, child delievery, treat patients, and prescribe medications in hospitals and clinic settings and in all branches of the armed forces. D.O.s use all the tools of modern medicine, just as M.D.s do. They are specially trained to preform osteopathic manipulations, a technique in which the D.O. use their hands to diagnose illness and treat patients, giving special attention to the joints, bones, muscles, and nerves. Manipulations improves the circulation, which in turn, creates a normal nerve and blood supply, enabling the body to heal itself. But, D.O.s bring an extra dimension to your family's health care, they look at the "total person".
