History
The Maya are probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. Originating in the Yucatán around 2600 B.C., they rose to prominence around A.D. 250 in present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, northern Belize and western Honduras. Building on the inherited inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations such as the Olmec, the Maya developed astronomy, calendrical systems and hieroglyphic writing. The Maya were noted as well for elaborate and highly decorated ceremonial architecture, including temple-pyramids, palaces and observatories, all built without metal tools. They were also skilled farmers, clearing large sections of tropical rain forest and, where groundwater was scarce, building sizeable underground reservoirs for the storage of rainwater. The Maya were equally skilled as weavers and potters, and cleared routes through jungles and swamps to foster extensive trade networks with distant peoples.
Around 300 B.C., the Maya adopted a hierarchical system of government with rule by nobles and kings. This civilization developed into highly structured kingdoms during the Classic period, A.D. 200-900. Their society consisted of many independent states, each with a rural farming community and large urban sites built around ceremonial centres. It started to decline around A.D. 900 when - for reasons which are still largely a mystery - the southern Maya abandoned their cities. When the northern Maya were integrated into the Toltec society by A.D. 1200, the Maya dynasty finally came to a close, although some peripheral centres continued to thrive until the Spanish Conquest in the early sixteenth century.

This is arevised version of a review which appeared in the print journal Folklore Forum. 29.2 (1998). It is published here revised by the author and with permission of the editor At first glance, The Mining Company's Ancient/Classical History web site may seem to contain more breadth than depth, but the sheer diversity of the site is stimulating enough. The purpose of the site, declares N.S. Gill, the site's webmaster, is to "shake the dust out of history by making it lively, relevant, and entertaining." Gill succeeds in this goal. The site is interdisciplinary and multi-media in every sense. An analysis of esoteric subjects, such as Gill's essay exploring the hexasigimally-based Babylonian mathematical system, is juxtaposed with Wilson Bertram's review of Sid Meier's popular computer simulation game Civilization II . Static read-only page formats, such as Clyde Winter's essay tracing African influence on Olmec writing, mix freely with interactive online activities, such as Serge Rosmorduc's web page which allows a user to type her/his name phonetically and see what it would look like when written in Ptolmaic hieroglyphs. Text and graphics intertwine: a user can click on a linked picture of a Greek scroll fragment in an essay about Homer and call up a detailed catalogue about the fragment, including its date, content, and material components. Gill skillfully mixes the high and the low, the traditional and the cutting-edge, and word and image to create a fascinating, if at times dizzying, information environment.

http://www.traduce-mx.com/history.htm

http://www.saxakali.com/historymam3.htm
History of Mesoamericans Tukin A Pakat (Welcome to the Maya World) Mesoamerican civilizations are divided into three periods: the Preclassic (2000 B.C. to A.D. 250), the Classic (A.D. 250 to 900), and Postclassic (900 to 1521 A.D.). During these three periods, hundreds of Mesoamerican societies rose, flourished, and fell prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s. Mesoamerican cultures included the Olmec (1200 - 400 B.C. ), Maya (1000 B.C. - A.D. 1521), Zapotec (500 B.C. - A.D. 1000 ), Teotihuacan (A.D. 1 - 650), Mixtec (A.D. 900 - 1521), Huastec (A.D. 1200 - 1521), El Tajin (A.D. 550 - 1100), Toltec (A.D. 950 - 1150), and Aztec (A.D. 1200 - 1521). Geographical boundaries of the ancient Maya empire spread through the countries of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, western Honduras and the five Mexican states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Campeche and Chiapas (see map ), a total area is around 500,000 square kilometers. The ancient Maya civilization lasted for 3,000 years, yet they are often dismissed because, even though they built huge stone temples and pyramids, they lacked metal tools and didn't use the wheel or beasts of burden. But they fashioned tools harder than steel, invented numerals and discovered the concept of zero (something that escaped the Greeks and Romans). One of the Maya's unique contributions to architecture is the Korbel Arch, also called the Maya Arch, which was formed by projecting stone blocks out from each side of a wall until they met forming a peak. This technique was a handy substitute for a true arch. The Maya also invented the wheel but, dismissing its usefulness, only used it for children's toys.

(Right) This is another Olmec jade, dating from approximately 1150 BC, from Honduras. The Hamitic / Phoenician characteristics of these objects are realized by many European scholars, but because of their "white" supremacist paradigm, they theorize that these are representations of the slaves of the Phoenician navigators and not the Phoenicians themselves. This would be the first instance in history of slave masters going to such an extant to honor their "slaves". Honors such as cutting stones from quarries, some weighing up to 60 tons, carving representations of their slaves and then transporting them 60 miles to the locations where they were found. Hmmmm.
(Right) Olmec stela, 1500-1000 BC La Venta Mexico. The Olmecs carved stela recording important events, just like their brothers and cousins on the Nile, and the other river and coastal civilizations. Moor means navigator, as in mariner and mer-maid (Moorish-maiden ).

Art Historian Since the appearance of the Olmec culture, considered to be the “mother of the Mesoamerican cultures”, ceramics took a prevailing place in the lives of the Mexican people. The earthenware vessels, anthropomorphic figures, and various types of utensils found in the archaeological ruins of the ancient Olmec cities of Tajin San Lorenzo La Venta and Tres Zapotes , suggest the techniques used in their ceramics: the use of clay, the knowledge of some primitive firing techniques, their means of coloring and painting designs. The Olmecs transcended their era (1500 B.C. –800 A.D) and bequeathed their knowledge to the cultures that flourished after them. The Teotihuacans (100 B.C. – 800 A.D.) prepared the majority of their vessels with clay and decorated them with a variety of techniques:

This beautiful book is the catalog of an exhibition of Olmec art that opened in 1996 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Anyone who ever traveled through Mexico and visited its archaeological sites will recognize the seminal imagery of Olmec sculpture and objects. Their significance to Mexico's most ancient culture, which prospered 3,000 years ago, is examined in detail. There are texts by 14 specialists, and all of the photographs were commissioned to illustrate the 120 pieces, which include monumental sculptures and smaller figurines excavated from archaeological sites, and axes and other objects related to human sacrifice. Since no written documents survive, these objects and works of art provide the sole insight into the mysteries of this culture's history, cosmology, and daily life.
