DOVE UPDATE
Vol. 4 No. 4 January 2003 REPORT ON THE CCD PROJECT NCES data on vocational teachers Schools and Staffing Survey This limitation is due to the fact that SASS relies on the NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) to select the schools whose teachers will be surveyed. For those states in which vocational education is offered through a separate system, such as area vocational schools, information on these institutions is often not included in the CCD. Thus, to the extent that these separate institutions are not included in the CCD, vocational schools and teachers are likely to be under-represented in SASS. (Students who attend these institutions are incorporated into NCES data sets through their “home” school enrollments and are generally not under-counted.) At the 2001 DOVE TRP meeting, we agreed to address this issue. Return to the Top PROJECT ACTIVTIES Supported by funding from the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE), DOVE TRP members and staff from NCES, the National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium (NASDCTEC), and MPR Associates worked with the states to determine whether the 1999–2000 CCD omitted any vocational schools or similar institutions. (The 1999–2000 data were the latest public data available at that time.) The involvement of the NASDCTEC was key to attaining a high response rate. The Consortium’s ability to explain the purpose of the project and its importance to vocational education increased our response count from 33 to 50 states. Each state director of vocational education was asked to review the list of their state’s schools and, if any were missing, to send a list of missing vocational schools to MPR Associates as well as to their state CCD coordinator so that these schools could be added to the 2001–02 CCD.

Oklahoma City Public Schools believes in the benefits the Arts bring to the total education. The district not only offers Arts courses for students to take but also uses art as a teaching tool. In 1995, Wilson Elementary changed from the traditional educational process of teaching each subject independently of each other to Arts Integration, where subjects are taught using the art forms. Wilson Elementary teachers are not the only ones in the district that use the Arts as a focus for teaching. A partnership between the Oklahoma City Public Schools; BLAC, Inc., of Oklahoma City; and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in New York features arts integration teaching methods. All district teachers can attend workshops on incorporating the arts into their lesson plans and enhancing the education they provide their students. The Arts cross over to various disciplines in education and reinforce the basics of any course. An actor gets into a character by knowing something about the history in which the play is set, a painter discovers the chemistry of painting supplies and a dancer learns about anatomy and the physical capabilities of the human body.

News Releases Things To Brag About Things To Brag About December 1999 Special thanks to all those who participated in Oklahoma City Public Schools Foundation’s "Principal for a Day." Community and business leaders took time out to experience what a District principal’s day is like in the Oklahoma City Public Schools. OCPS employees know how important the United Way is to our community and our students. Proving our support, as District employees our contributions totaled more than $152,000, exceeding the goal by $22,000. OCPS is comprised of many special and generous people. Spencer Elementary students were challenged to collect 1,500 food items for Oklahoma City Food Banks. The students rose to the challenge by exceeding their goal by 250 food items. Special congratulations go to Mr. Pitts and his 5 th grade class for collecting more than half of the food. Students at North Highland Math and Science Academy were treated to "Aviation Day." Students began their day with an air show and flight demonstration using model airplanes. Presenter Jim Smith, created hands-on activities to teach students about the physics of flight. Thanks to Mr. Smith, North Highland was flying high. A collage John Marshall High School students and teachers worked on for the Oklahoma Historical Society, Southwestern Bell and Hideaway Pizza’s statewide competition entitled: "Collage 2000: An Oklahoma Vision of the Millennium Preserved in Images and Words" won first place in Craftsmanship. This recognition included a $100 award. Technology is a "long-neglected tool" in many Oklahoma schools, the state's instructional technology plan concedes. That neglect stems mainly from inadequate training for teachers and an unwillingness by districts and legislators to provide funding, according to several technology experts in the Sooner State. Join our on-line Town Meeting to discuss what role technology should play in education reform.
A few districts are well-stocked with modern computers and classroom networks, says John Curran, who heads the state's organization of school technologists. But out-of-date technology is the norm; in fact, most schools are "teaching children as if they were still living in the American agrarian society of the 19th century," the state plan says. "Oklahoma has 548 districts; it also has 548 levels of sophistication in technology," state Superintendent Sandra Garrett says. The state has endorsed technology skills as a priority for students, but its financial support has run out of gas at the statehouse. This year, in the midst of a state economic boom, lawmakers boosted overall support for schools by $103 million to $1.6 billion. But they turned down the department of education's request for $62 millionor $100 per studentfor school technology. State Education Agency Web Site:
