Hollywood Enters the Sea with"SHIFTING BASELINES"

A New Partnership Puts the Ocean Crisis in the Spotlight with the Truth about Ocean Decline
Two-thirds of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans but despite their rapidly deteriorating state, the issue is not even a blip on the public radar. Shifting Baselines, a new partnership between marine biologists, ocean conservationists, underwater cinematographers, and Hollywood filmmakers, has been formed to provide a single, clear description of the state of ocean decline that is not limited by concerns about market share or membership. The project is based on the recently coined term, "shifting baselines." Today’s launch of the Shifting Baselines website at www.shiftingbaselines.org is the first major event in what will be a slow-building media campaign, which will also include a celebrity-driven public service announcement series.

    6. Oceanography News
The biggest topic in oceanography right now, especially in soggy southern California,is El NiƱo. You've seen it on the news and heard about it on the radio.
    http://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/kids/news.html
    March 1998:
  • Why are the waves which are now breaking along the
California coast so much bigger than usual?
Before you can understand the answer to this question, you first have to understand the "anatomy" of a wave. The top of a wave is called the crest, and the bottom of the wave is called the trough. The distance between two crests (or two troughs) is called the wavelength. The distance from the top of the crest to the bottom of the trough is call the wave height. Anatomy of a Wave
Waves break when they become "too steep". This occurs when their steepness is greater than or equal to 1/7 (or about 0.143). The steepness of a wave is equal to the height of the wave divided by the wavelength. steepness = height wavelength As waves move toward the shore, the depth of the water decreases and the wave slows down due to friction between the wave and the ocean floor.
As a result, the faster moving waves further away from the coast begin to catch up to the waves closer to the coast. Therefore, the crests become closer to one another, the wavelength decreases, and the waves break. For example, if a wave has a height of 1 meter and a wavelength of 10 meters, its steepness is 1/10 (or 0.10). Thus, the wave will not break. However, as this wave approaches the coast it will slow down until the distance between its crest and the crest of the wave behind it (or the wavelength) becomes 7 meters. The steepness of the wave will then be 1/7 (or 0.143), and the wave will break.

RI scientists find volcanic craters off Grenada
Narragansett, RI March 26, 2003 After ten days of intense research, scientists have discovered three volcanic craters and two cones near the Kick 'em Jenny submarine volcano. Under a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a joint team of scientists from the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO), the University of the West Indies (UWI), and NOAA conducted a detailed oceanographic survey and sampling of the volcano earlier this month. Preliminary findings were revealed at a press conference on Saturday in St. George's, Grenada.

Orcutt, a professor of geophysics and director of the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps, was elected at the APS's annual general meeting in Philadelphia in late April. Orcutt was elected to American Philosophical Society Class 1, which includes mathematical and physical sciences. Other classes include biological sciences; social sciences; humanities; and the arts, professions, public, and private affairs. The American Philosophical Society, founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1743, has 868 elected members, 728 from the United States and 140 from more than two dozen foreign countries. Early members of the organization included George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, James Madison, and John Marshall. Nineteenth century members included John James Audubon, Robert Fulton, Charles Darwin, Thomas Edison, and Louis Pasteur. "We at Scripps Institution of Oceanography are really proud to have John Orcutt as a colleague. He has accomplished much in his research and as director of our Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics," said Charles Kennel, director of Scripps. "By recognizing John, the American Philosophical Society does the whole institution honor." Orcutt's APS election comes on the heels of several recent honors and appointments. Currently General Secretary of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Orcutt was recently selected to become president-elect of AGU. He will assume the presidency of the 39,000-member organization in 2004. Orcutt also recently accepted an appointment on the Scientific Advisory Panel of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, a group charged with reviewing the effects of federal ocean-related laws and programs. The commission will present its findings and recommendations in a final report to Congress and the president in the spring of 2003. Orcutt's major areas of research are marine seismology applied to both crustal and mantle structure, particularly seismic tomography, long-term ocean observations and wireless networking related to observations, theoretical seismology, and applications of seismology to monitoring of nuclear tests. He has been the chief scientist on more than 20 oceanographic expeditions. Orcutt is the Secretary of the Navy/Chief of Naval Operations Oceanography Chair. He has been a member of the Defense Science Board Task Force on Underground Facilities; Chair of the Consortium for Ocean Research and Education (CORE) Public Affairs Committee; and President of Joint Oceanographic Institutions, Inc. As a member of MEDEA, he worked on the declassification of Navy environmental data including GEOSAT satellite altimetry data and marine magnetics. Orcutt also has served as a member of the NRC Ocean Studies Board and was chairman of its Navy Committee for three years. He is Chair of the CORE/NSF Dynamics of Earth and Ocean Systems (DEOS) Steering Committee, and Chairs the National Research Council Committee on Ocean Exploration. He was awarded the Maurice Ewing Medal by the U.S. Navy and AGU in 1994. Orcutt received a B.A. from the U.S. Naval Academy, an MSc. from the University of Liverpool (Fulbright Scholar), and a Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and has received numerous academic honors and awards. In 1998, he was named UCSD Alumnus of the Year. Orcutt lives in Del Mar, Calif., with his wife, Sharyn. His two daughters live in Solana Beach and Encinitas. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scripps Institution of Oceanography on the web: http://scripps.ucsd.edu Scripps News on the web: http://scrippsnews.ucsd.edu Scripps Centennial on the web: http://scripps100.ucsd.edu Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for global science research and graduate training in the world. The scientific scope of the institution has grown since its founding in 1903. A century of Scripps science has had an invaluable impact on oceanography, on understanding of the earth, and on society. More than 300 research programs are under way today in a wide range of scientific areas. Scripps operates one of the largest U.S. academic fleets with four oceanographic research ships and one research platform for worldwide exploration. Now plunging boldly into the 21st century, Scripps will celebrate its centennial in 2003.

Envisat, European Earth observation satellite, has been launched from Kourou (Guyane) the 1 st of March at 01h07 UT (02 h 07 French time; 28 February, 22h07 local time) by an Ariane 5 rocket. Built by Esa, it is devoted to environmental studies. It will carry ten instruments, among which a radar altimeter, and the Doris system. Integrated in climate study and operational oceanography programmes, such as Godae/Mercator, in combination with Jason-1, Envisat data will support ocean and climate predictions. Altimetric and orbitography data from Envisat will be processed in part at CLS by the same ground system than Jason-1, SSALTO. Instrument control (Doris and Poseidon) and altimetric processing part of SSALTO were specified and developed by CLS for Cnes, the French space agency. CLS Team will ensure production, calibration and validation of these data, under CNES contract. More information: http://www.esa.int/envisat
