RSI Home Powered by Compaq Proliant Webserver IDL's Object-Oriented Programming Used to Speed Electron Spectroscopy Experiments Application developers at the research laboratory ELETTRA, in Trieste, Italy are using IDL's object-oriented programming to reduce cost and wasted time in experiments conducted with ELETTRA's Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) microscopy beamline. The ESCA beamline is part of ELETTRA's third-generation synchrotron, which generates extremely bright light that is used in several types of experiments. With IDL, developers and researchers have at hand a complete, easily modified, custom data acquisition and processing environment. ELETTRA's ESCA microscopy beamline is used by approximately 10 groups of visiting scientists during a year, although almost 100 groups apply for access. The scientists come from universities, national laboratories and industries all over the world to conduct experiments in material science, biological research and surface studies. Because of the high demand for access to the beamline, conducting experiments efficiently is critical. Different requirements accompany each experiment, which is why the ability to easily customize the process is critical. Furthermore, researchers continually want more advanced and more complex analysis, often in heterogeneous computer environments. "The dream of the experimental scientist is to handle all of these varying requirements through a familiar, graphical user interface on a workstation," says Luca Gregoratti, a research assistant at ELETTRA.

However, we decided to begin in 1951 since the birth of the widely publicized UNIVAC seems to spark the commercial engine that drives the modern pursuit of object-oriented programming and development. This commercial revolution of computers, helped along the way a decade later by IBM's 1400 series in 1961, built the momentum for developing programming languages that could encapsulate object-oriented concepts.
