Becoming a Nuclear Engineer
Index Key: ENG070 Author: beth a berry Subject: Becoming a Nuclear engineer. What should I study to become a nuclear engineer? Response #: 1 of 1 Author: wildman jackson Basically, to become a nuclear engineer you must major in nuclear engineer- ing in college. This, of course, requires a basic background in chemistry, physics, materials, etc. which is studied in your first years in college. If you are not yet in college I would recommend trying to finish up high school as strongly as possible to ensure your acceptance in to a quality college.

Additional Sources of Information
Nature of the Work top Employment Nuclear engineers held about 14,000 jobs in 2000. About 58 percent were in utilities, 26 percent in engineering consulting firms, and 14 percent in the Federal Government. More than half of all federally employed nuclear engineers were civilian employees of the Navy, and most of the rest worked for the Department of Energy. Most nonfederally employed nuclear engineers worked for public utilities or engineering consulting companies. Some worked for defense manufacturers or manufacturers of nuclear power equipment.
Job Outlook
Good opportunities should exist for nuclear engineers because the small number of nuclear engineering graduates is likely to be in rough balance with the number of job openings. Because this is a small occupation, projected job growth will generate few openings; consequently, most openings will result from the need to replace nuclear engineers who transfer to other occupations or leave the labor force.

This is professional engineering work in evaluating the safety, design, construction, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities such as nuclear power plants, low-level radioactive waste disposal facilities, and fuel cycle facilities. Nuclear Engineers act as intermediaries between Federal regulators and applicants for Federal permits; review design plans and specifications; inspect nuclear facilities; and evaluate nuclear safety systems. A Nuclear Engineer 1 performs entry-level work which is reviewed by a higher level engineer. A Nuclear Engineer 2 has more authority and accountability, and can make independent technical decisions. Work is reviewed for completeness and attainment of program objectives.
