Culture
The Northern Marianas is the fastest growing area in Micronesia. The population has shot from just under 10,000 in 1970 to over 50,000 today, about half of which are resident aliens, mostly from the Philippines, China and Korea. Roughly 75% of the native population is Chamorro, the rest Carolinian. The local culture is a hybrid of native and Spanish colonial influences, with a powerful overlay of popular American trends. English is the official language, though Chamorro and Carolinian are the native tongues and are widely spoken. You'll hear Japanese in most hotels and some shops. Hafa adai is the traditional greeting, though the slang term howzit is becoming nearly as common. The predominant religion of the Northern Marianas is Roman Catholic, especially among the Chamorros and Filipino immigrants. Most cultural activities center around the Catholic church and religious festivities, including annual fiestas in honor of each village's patron saint. There are also Baptist, Methodist, Mormon, Korean Presbyterian, Evangelical and Seventh-Day Adventist churches. Dance in the Marianas ranges from a Spanish-influenced cha-cha popular among the Chamorros to the 'stick dance,' a Carolinian import combining stick beating and foot shuffling.

The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) , a chain of 17 volcanic islands, stretches over 375 miles north to south and covers a land area of 181 square miles. There are six inhabited islands, but most of CNMI's 69,221 (Census 2000, U.S. Bureau, IDB) people live on Saipan. Formerly a part of the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, CNMI opted in the 1970s to form closer ties with the U.S., becoming a commonwealth and a permanent part of the U.S. The people of CNMI are U.S. citizens. Tourism is a major industry and manufacturing is growing rapidly. Culture
Language

The Commonwealth has Chamorro, English, and Carolinian as its official languages. In the non-classroom setting, Carolinians more often can speak Chamorro than Chamorros speak Carolinian. It should be noted also that both languages have linguistic relations elsewhere. The Chamorro language is also spoken in Guam, a U.S. territory. The Carolinian language is linguistically related to languages in the outer islands of Chuuk, Yap, and the Southwest Islands of Palau. Education

The Commonwealth of the
Northern Mariana Islands
. . . is a United States jurisdiction consisting of fourteen tropical islands in the geographical region known as Micronesianorth of the equator, east of the Philippines and west of the international date line. Saipan, the largest and most populous of the Northern Mariana Islands and the capitol of the Commonwealth, is approximately 1,500 miles south of Tokyo, 1,400 miles east of Manila and 3,200 miles west of Honolulu. Other principal islands in the Commonwealth include Tinian and Rota, both situated south of Saipan. (Guam, the fifteenth and southernmost island in the Marianas archipelago, is a separate U.S. Territory.) The Marianas were originally settled more than 3,500 years ago by islanders migrating in long voyages from the south and west. Over time, these original settlers developed the Chamorro culture. In subsequent migrations, islanders from the Caroline archipelago (to the south) established communities on Saipan, in which they preserved their unique culture. Westerners first visited the Marianas in 1521. The northern Mariana Islands were subsequently colonized by Spain (leaving a lasting cultural influence), Germany and Japan.

If you have specific questions, I suggest you check Uncle Phil's Saipan Info A-Z first! Another good place to look is the CNMI Guide . Another great link to government and business sites is CNMI.NET . For telephone numbers check out Verizon Pacifica's Web Site

Where the Heck is Saipan?
Saipan, the administrative center of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands ( CNMI ), is about a hundred miles north of Guam in the Western Pacific. On your world map, imagine a line drawn due East from the Philippines and another drawn due South of Japan. The lines intersect in the vicinity of Saipan.
