Geography
Korea's geography influences its history and culture.
Republic of Korea Korea is a rugged peninsula lying between China on the west and north and Japan to the east. The whole Korean peninsula is about 85,500 square miles, about the size of Utah. South Korea is only 99,000 square miles roughly similar to Oregon and its population is close to 50 million (Compared to Oergon's 3 million). Mountains and hills make up about 70 percent of the country. Sunset on Cheju Island Farming and Fishing:
Until modern times, Koreans lived in small farming communities that were mainly concentrated in the few good arable parts of the peninsula. Although Located at the same latitude as both St. Louis and San Francisco, mountains and frigid arctic winds from the north give Korea cold winters. Preserved and pickled foods, prepared In Anticipation of the cold winters, are characteristics of Korean cooking. Cold weather and farm work make for hearty food. Unlike neighboring Japan or China, a Korean breakfast, for instance, might be a big bowl of Tripe Soup or Beef Rib Soup with lots of rice. Its Peninsular Location gives Koreans three different seas from which to gather fish- the Yellow Sea, the East Sea (also known as the Sea of Japan), and the unique micro environment where the two seas come together at the south end of the peninsula. Seafood is a feature of Korean life and no table is ever without a bowl of tiny dried and salted fish, even for breakfast.

    North Korea Quick Facts
Political Features North Korea was born immediately after WWII as a client state of the Soviet Union. Its communist government, though, unlike the USSR, is still alive and well. The land is inhospitable and difficult to farm. Recently, North Korea required assistance from the international community to help stop a famine among it citizens. Although North and South Korea have officially been at war since 1950, the active conflict known as the Korean War lasted from 1950 to 1953. The war has seen little fighting in the last few decades, with the two sides divided by the DMZ North Korea has little in the way of industries, as it does not participate much in international trade; its major industry is military goods, and the country has recently come under political fire from the international community as a result of it rising nuclear program. Though the Koreans are believed to have nuclear capabilities at this time, it is unknown whether they would use them against the South.

Korea is situated on the Korean Peninsula, which spans 1,100 kilometers north to south. The Korean Peninsula lies on the northeastern section of the Asian continent, where Korean waters are joined by the western-most parts of the Pacific. The peninsula shares its northern border with China and Russia. To its east is the East Sea, beyond which neighboring Japan lies. In addition to the mainland peninsula, Korea includes some 3,000 islands.
Korea encompasses a total of 222,154 square kilometers-almost the same size as Britain or Romania. Some 45 percent of this area, or 99,000 square kilometers, is considered cultivatable area, excluding reclaimed land areas. Mountainous terrain accounts for some two-thirds of the territory like Portugal, Hungary or Ireland.
The Taebaeksan range runs the full length of the east coast, where the lashing waves of the East Sea have carved out sheer cliffs and rocky islets. The western and southern slopes are rather gentle, forming plains and many offshore islands honeycombed with inlets.
The peninsula features so many scenic mountains and rivers that Koreans have often likened their country to a beautifully embroidered brocade. The highest peak is Mt. Baekdusan in North Korea, which rises up 2,744 meters above sea level along the northern border facing China. Mt. Baekdusan is an extinct volcano where a large volcanic lake, named Cheonji, has been formed. The mountain is regarded as an especially important symbol of the Korean spirit and is mentioned in Korea's national anthem.

North Korean society is dominated by a philosophy known as juche . Juche can be translated as self-reliance and was introduced a half-century ago by the first leader of North Korea, Kim Il Sung. Kim, known as the Great Leader, wanted to distance his fledgling Communist state from China and the Soviet Union. He fashioned juche as a combination of communist ideology and strong Korean nationalism.
