NEA President Weaver Scheduled for RA The NDEA 2003 Representative Assembly is scheduled April 12 at Bismarck's Doublewood Inn. This year, NEA President Reg Weaver will speak to the delegates on what's happening to public education at the national level. A middle school science teacher and 35-year classroom veteran, Weaver is a native of Danville, Illinois, where he attended a segregated school for part of his elementary school years. As an adult, he rose through the NEA ranks serving as a local association president in Harvey, IL, then president of the Illinois Education Association. He served on the NEA Executive Committee from 1989-1995, and for the past six years has served as NEA Vice President. Weaver, an outspoken advocate for public education, was elected President of the 2.7 million-member NEA last year. As the Association's vice president, Weaver logged tens of thousands of miles traveling across the country as an ambassador for public education. Kimberly Johnson, a recent graduate of the University of North Dakota, is a first-year English teacher at Valley Middle School in Grand Forks, North Dakota. This was a good week! I survived my first round of parent-student-teacher conferences with no major problems or controversy, although the experience left me exhausted mostly because I had to choose my words very carefully. The teacher who writes a Teachers' Dictionary of Euphemisms will become very rich! How many nice ways are there to say "Your child is failing my class?" Overall, though, most of the parents I met were supportive of their children and cared about their children's progress in school. We didn't have classes last Thursday and Friday because of a teachers convention. I had planned to attend the Thursday middle school session, but my to-do list was too long to allow me to leave the list, even for one more day. The parent conferences had caused make-up and late work to pile up on my desk, and it took me four hours on Thursday just to correct it all. I also had to finalize my lesson plans for the rest of October and determine how to teach the upcoming writing unit. Finally, I'm beginning to feel a little more caught up with my schoolwork, but now I need one more day off to catch up on my sleep!

North Dakota has more than 113,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in North Dakota and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system.
