When searching the online catalogs of other libraries there are several things you need to keep in mind.
  • Not all library catalogs are created equal, which means that most will look completely different from ALCUIN (Furman University's library catalog.) These differences are mostly cosmetic.
  • The information available in each library catalog is basically the same. They all provide information on what materials that library owns. Most include journals the library subscribes to, and many include media and government documents the library collects.
  • They all allow you to search by title, author, and subject. Most allow keyword searching.
  • It is not always possible to visit these libraries in person. Visit the ILL/Document Delivery web page for information on how to obtain items not owned by the Furman University Libraries.

REDMOND, Wash, April 11-Addressing business, government and community leaders in Raleigh and Charlotte today, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Bill Gates announced three North Carolina educational initiatives totaling more than $5.4 million. Microsoft announced it is providing a combination of financial and technical support, software and training to the following educational organizations:
  • United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Six historically black colleges and universities in North Carolina, all members of UNCF, will receive more than $2 million in software, including Windows 95 and Office for Windows 95. The North Carolina schools are part of a more than $16 million national partnership between Microsoft and UNCF in which Microsoft is providing software, support, training, internship opportunities, computer science department curriculum and support in developing a site for UNCF on the Internet's World Wide Web.
"North Carolina is home to many important businesses, colleges and universities," said Gates. "Our hope is that the software and technical support we provide can help to build a 'connected learning community' in North Carolina, one in which everyone participates and collaborates on lifelong learning for students of all ages and walks of life."

The Maps Collection houses over 250,000 maps covering the world and parts of our solar system. It collects materials in support of teaching and research on campus as well as general reference. The Collection contains atlases, gazetteers, cartographic reference volumes, CD-ROMs, mapping software, journals, microforms, transparencies, and government depository publications. The volumes in the Maps Collection (with the exception of the government document gazetteers) have been cataloged and are listed in the UNC-Chapel Hill online catalog . Many of the flat map collections are not yet cataloged. The Maps Collection's in-house files must be consulted for holdings information about them. The Maps Collection is administratively part of the Davis Library Reference Department . The Reference Department also collects atlases, particularly those of thematic and historical nature. Many of the maps received through the Federal Depository program are sent to the Maps Collection or the Geological Sciences Library, or both. The Documents Section of the Reference Department likewise houses a number of government maps, particularly Soil Surveys, National Park maps, and Forest Service maps. Davis Reference also supports

    39. Tobacco History
Brief outline, based on materials in the north carolina State University libraries.
    http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/archives/exhibits/tobacco/thistory.html
Tobacco History Tobacco is related to garden vegetables, flowers, weeds, and poisonous herbs such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, petunias, jimson wood, ground cherries, and nightshade. The family of plants is Solanaceae; the genus Nicotiana contains about 100 species, only two of which have been extensively cultivated. Nicotiana tabacam is used in cigarettes and tobacco and is the predominant type of crop tobacco. Originally, Native Americans in the eastern United States grew Nicotiana rustica, which was the first form of tobacco introduced in England and Portugal. N. Tabacam, first introduced to the Spanish, was obtained from Mexico and South America. It has been the preferred tobacco since settlers in Jamestown, Virginia, began growing it. Because planters believed that tobacco had to be grown on virgin soil, tobacco gradually made its way to the eastern part of what is now North Carolina. Consumer preferences for tobacco products changed decidedly from the early 1700's. Carl Linnaeus describes tobacco in this 1762 edition of Caroli Linnaei Species plantarum, exhibentes plantas rite cognitas, ad general relatas, cum differentiis specificis, nominibus trivialibus, synonymis selectis, locis natalibus, secundum system a sexuale digestas
