THE PEOPLES' LOBBYIST 19 West Hargett Street, Suite 602, Raleigh, North Carolina 27601 919-836-0027 2003 Action Plan Legislative Watch Judicial Reform Redistricting ... Join C ommon Cause/North Carolina is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization working to promote openness, honesty and accountability in government at the federal, state, and local levels. WHY COMMON CAUSE? "I think requiring a democracy that really works, assuring that it works demands a real sense of participation. Common Cause has done so much on that front. If you think that our democracy is broken or threatens to be broken and as citizens we are charged to fix it, then I don't know who does a better work on that then Common Cause. I think Americans when pressed when asked when it's put to them they believe in a democracy sort of like Lincoln described of the people, by the people, for the people. They don't believe that's what we're getting and they don't know exactly how to change it, but they want to change it. If I ask people out in the broader community, do you think government treats the wealthy and everybody else the same, that we have a fair government in that way or are we getting the government that we purchased. I think the sense is very profound that we're going in the wrong direction. And people reject that. They want to fight against it. Common Cause has been one of the best avenues to pursue that claim. We've been one of the best avenues to make that heartfelt sentiment that we want to make this democracy real come to pass."

    A) A sleepy little fishing village
    B) The "Sailing Capital of North Carolina"
    C) A developing "arts center"
    D) All of the above
Few people that know Oriental would argue with you if you answered "all of the above". Every day visitors are discovering and rediscovering the many faces of Oriental, North Carolina. Located on the wide shores of the Neuse River, not far from Pamlico Sound, Oriental was originally discovered by one Louis B. Midyette in the 1870’s . Legend says that "Uncle Lou", as he was known, anchored his sailboat in the protected waters of Oriental, at the mouth of Smith Creek, to escape a gale. He was sailing from New Bern back to his home in Dare County where he was a farmer and a fisherman. Storytellers claim that the next morning Lou went ashore and climbed a tree. He was captured by the beautiful landscape and all of the waterfront created by the many creeks. He returned home to persuade others to join his family in moving to the area. But the story doesn’t stop there…

Welcome to our website! Canton is nestled among five hills along the banks of the Pigeon River in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Our moderate climate with four distinct seasons makes Canton one of the nicest places to live anywhere. Canton is near major highways and within easy driving distance of the regional airport. Canton's beautiful residential communities lie along tree-lined streets in this quaint town. Canton is the home of Blue Ridge Papers, Incorporated, Haywood County's largest industry. The mill produces paper and allied products. Two industrial parks have been developed just north of Canton. The Town of Canton is under a Council-Manager form of government consisting of a Mayor and four members of the Town Board of Aldermen. Town council is elected every two years. Canton has a recreation program as part of its services to its citizens. The Recreation Park has a large, modern swimming pool, playground, picnic tables, lighted tennis courts, and ball fields adjacent to the park. Activities include "Pickin in the Park" during the summer months, a walking trail surrounding the park area; an annual Labor Day celebration, a festivalof lights during the Christmas holiday season, and the annual lighted night Christmas parade. Canton is within easy access of several fine golf courses. Hiking and nature trails and superior trout and bass fishing are a part of the nearby National Forest. Nearby are the nation's two most visited national parks; Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway. Located near Canton at Maggie Valley are the Cataloochee Ski Slopes with facilities for all classes of skiers. Camping and outdoor living are at their best in the forests and campgrounds in Haywood County. There are many public and private campgrounds for the outdoorsman.
