Thirty years ago, the Academy established a series of small trusts in recognition of distinguished leaders who were deceased. In 1985, a formal entity was created, the Family Health Foundation of North Carolina, affiliated with the American Academy of Family Physicians' philanthropic arm. The evolution of transitioning to a public charitable trust was accomplished in 1990, when the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians Foundation was recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity.
Advocacy and educational programs of the Academy and Foundation ultimately improve health care for all citizens of North Carolina.

…a child is abused or neglected in North Carolina
In about half of the cases, these children understand abuse before they learn to read. 25-40 children die each year in North Carolina as a result of abuse. Almost all criminals report having been abused as children. More than 100,000 children are reported to authorities each year in our state. 85% of the time the perpetrator of child abuse and neglect is a biological parent. Parents who were abused as children are six times more likely to abuse their own kids. Abuse and neglect do not discriminate by social, economic, or ethnic background. Together, we can stop it. We can stop child abuse. We know how. Help us to protect North Carolina’s kids by offering all parents in our state the option of receiving preventative services, either in their home or through community-based prevention efforts.

    Background
Casey Family Programs National Center for Resource Family Support, together with the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, is sponsoring this Breakthrough Series Collaborative on Recruiting and Retaining Resource Families. In this Breakthrough Series Collaborative (BSC), public child welfare agencies and Tribes that share a commitment to improving the way they recruit and retain resource families, including foster, kinship, and adoptive families, and to making major, rapid changes that will produce breakthrough results, will be brought together to share knowledge, challenges, and successes. Each selected public child welfare agency or Tribe has put together a team that will work together to make changes and implement new systems over the course of one year. The teams from across the country will be guided and mentored by experts in the field as they study, test, and implement the latest knowledge and evidence available. All participating four-person teams will come together for three two-day Learning Sessions and will be expected to test changes and measure the impact of these changes between the Learning Sessions. Please review the Collaborative Charter (below) for more specific information about this project.

The NC 4-H School-Age Care Project

Since 1989 the North Carolina 4-H Youth Development Department at North Carolina State University has supported 4-H agents in developing after school programs for families and children. The primary objectives of the NC 4-H School-Age Care Project are to increase the availability of after school programs and improve the quality of existing after school programs.
    Afterschool Alliance
The Alliance was formed on the belief that afterschool programs are critical to children and families today, and that the need for programs is not adequately addressed. As many as 15 million children have no place to go after the school bell rings. These children are at significant risk of getting poor grades, being victims of crime, or participating in anti-social behaviors that have grave consequences and costs to society. They are also missing significant opportunities to learn and grow. Afterschool.gov
