K-12 2000 History, Heritage and Ongoing Tradition
The purpose of the K-12 is to showcase student talent across the state of North Carolina - mountains to sea. Also, to create an effective network among students, teachers, art councils, local potters, suppliers, and the North Carolina Pottery Center while increasing membership and awareness of the Center. Work by students from public, private, special needs, home and alternative schools and The Governor Morehead School for the Blind were displayed. Our special collaboration projects included Van Gogh's Starry Night, The Tree of Life, Fish Mobile, Picnic Table Top and Animal Habitats. The two Zoo Totems connect the NCPC with the zoo and the wonderful Wayne County students who lovingly and reluctantly left their project behind as they headed for the zoo.

What's to Eat?
Since it’s beginning in 1946, the National School Lunch Program has provided nutritious meals to school children. Studies have shown that students participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs do better on standardized tests, attend school regularly, and cause less discipline concerns. The United States Department of Agriculture says, “ All children need a nutritious breakfast and lunch. The School Breakfast and Lunch Programs offers all children—– regardless of their economic status—– a critical jump-start to each day of learning.” The State of Minnesota Breakfast Study in 1997 found that students who ate breakfast had a general increase in math grades and resulting scores, increased student attention, reduced nurse visits, and improved student behavior.
Smart Nutrition
Each meal is designed to provide adequate calories, nutrients and dietary fiber while reducing or limiting saturated fat and cholesterol. Each breakfast provides 1/4 of the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for key nutrients. Each lunch provides 1/3 of the RDA for key nutrients. Key nutrients included in the breakfast and lunch are: protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, calcium, and iron. No more than 30 percent of the calories are from fat. Less than 10 percent of the calories can come from saturated fat. Breakfast Components Are:

What is Acupuncture? What is Moxibustion? Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM,TOM) Traditional (Classical) Acupuncture ... Professional Organizations/Schools WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE? It is important to note that acupuncture is only one of a number of modalities which are part of Oriental medicine. It does however have a special place because of its uniqueness and because it was the first to become widely known and popular in the West. Although dating back some 3,000 years in China, in the West this is a developing field and profession. Because acupuncture was the first modality of Oriental medicine to become well known in the west, Acupuncturist has become the common title in state licensing for practitioners of traditional Oriental medicine in general. Acupuncture is usually combined with the less well known moxibustion. Acupuncture is the insertion of acupuncture needles in specific points on the body which are considered to effect the Qi (energy) pathways. It is used for the correction of imbalances in energy and thus in body-mind function that lead to illness and disease. These imbalances can be diagnosed and corrected before disease becomes evident or clinically detectable by Western medicine. Acupuncture and its related practice of moxibustion can thus be used to treat and/or prevent disease.

The Impacts of Growth and Sprawl in North Carolina
Mary Beth Powell-PI. The 2000 census shows that North Carolina has grown rapidly since 1990, with the bulk of the growth occurring in the Triangle, Triad and Charlotte-Mecklenburg regions. For the most part, growth has brought prosperity: more job opportunities and higher personal income. But in many communities, rapid, uncontrolled growth often detracts from, rather than adds to, their quality of life. In fact, rapid growth threatens to undermine the state's competitive edge by reducing its quality of life. This project, funded by the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center, calls for two main products: (1) an assessment of land use change in North Carolina over the last two decades and (2) a list of benchmarks or indicators that can be used to measure changes in the quality of life of North Carolina.
The Impact of "Smart Codes" on Building Rehabilitation
This project, funded by the Fannie Mae Founsation, will evaluate the impact of the new building codes in New Jersey and Maryland on the number of, and dollar value invested in, rehabilitation projects in those states. In addition, we will examine whether states with a more flexible approach to implementing building codes may achieve the same result that New Jersey and Maryland have with their new rehabilitation code. The proposed research will clarify the true impact of the new rehabilitation codes and help policy-makers determine the most effective means (e.g., smart codes or flexible enforcement) of stimulating investment in our nations stock of older buildings.

Introduction
The primary purpose of this guide is to present the essential technical considerations for implementing the North Carolina Instructional Technology Plan (NCITP). The Department of Public Instruction (DPI), and the State Information Technology Services (ITS) have developed a series of technical standards, recommendations, statements of direction, and other aids to assist schools and districts in implementing a wide range of instructional and administrative technology. The purpose of these recommendations is to provide a blueprint of what the minimum level of infrastructure should be in each LEA throughout North Carolina.
