http://compphys.bio.uci.edu/patrick/stuntranch/ArchelogyActivities.html
ARCHEOLOGY ACTIVITIES
Project I. Students are to bring to class an object, photograph or drawing of an object that represents their past. In small groups, students tell each other what that object conveys about their past. In a large group discussion following this activity, try to determine: 1. Why is it important for you to know about your past? 2. Is it important to know about human past? Why or why not? 3. Human have lived in North America for at least 12,000 years. Is it important to know about their lives? Why or why not? 4. What can we learn from the past?
PROJECT II. As a large group, make your own list of what humans need in order to live. Make a chart comparing how we satisfy those needs and how the Chumash Indians met those same needs. Write the basic need in the left hand column (food, housing etc). In the second column, write down how we satisfy this need. In the third column write down how the Chumash Indian met the same need. In the last column, compare and contrast your culture and those of the Indians. Is this activity one most likely to be performed by an archeologist or anthropologist? Why?

http://intranet.rutgers.edu/~clemens/pdr1fa99.html
EARLY AMERICA: NORTH AMERICA DURING THE AGE OF EUROPEAN EXPANSION This Problems and Directed Readings (PDR-I) course covers the 16th and 17th centuries, and places the settlement of British North America in the context of European and African history, while developing comparisons with Spanish and French settlement of the New World. The course is designed to prepare students for the qualifying exams, help them develop the background they will need to teach a US survey (or world history course), and raise historiographical and research questions that they might find useful in their own work (even if they work in different time periods). The emphasis is on cultural contact in Early America and the diversity of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century peoples in eastern North America and the Caribbean. Some significant topics in early American history receive less coverage than we would wish and are left to you to pursue on your own (see the bibliography). Students without background in colonial America and the early modern Atlantic world might wish to consult two works, neither of which is assigned, Edmund Morgan's American Slavery, American Freedom

Explorers in North America
Video Summary: Who were the first Europeans to step foot in the New World? What were they hoping to find? And what impact did their arrival have on the people already living there? Rob Cuddi uses essential questions like these to teach his fifth-grade students about the early explorers in North America. Mr. Cuddi begins by asking guiding questions about the relationship between the early explorers and the Native Americans. The class then divides into small groups to research and answer the questions and plan their presentations. Mr. Cuddi and his students develop a rubric that will be used in evaluating the presentations. Then each group introduces an explorer and answers the essential questions using skits, poetry, and other literary devices they've been studying in English class. As the lesson concludes, students summarize important facts about each explorer and post their findings on a class data chart.

The Archaeological Institute of America has initiated an open declaration concerning the fate of Iraq's cultural heritage. We are profoundly concerned about the possible disastrous effects of military conflict on the sites, monuments, and museums of Iraq. The full text and list of signatories is available on the AIA website. AIA Urges Protection of Iraq's Archaeological Heritage
The archaeological and cultural heritage community has become increasingly concerned about the fate of Iraq’s archaeological sites, antiquities, and cultural property in the event of war and during a post-war reconstruction period. The AIA has long supported the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and reaffirmed this support in the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War. The AIA now once again expresses its profound concern about the potential for damage to monuments, sites, antiquities, and cultural institutions as a result of war and its aftermath. New! Destinations: Archeology of North Cascades
Though it will be a long time before the complete story of human use of the North Cascades can be told, the following sections summarize what has been learned from recent archeological studies in this most scenic and rugged of Washington''s mountainous landscapes. Most of the archeological sites in the park consist of the below-ground remains of camps, villages, and resource use areas where Indian people processed and cooked food, collected specific kinds of rocks and minerals for tools, and hunted, fished, and collected plants. Some sites have above-ground remains, and appear as rockshelters, rock art, bark-stripped trees, rock features, and pits dug into the ground. A much smaller number of sites reflect historic-period, non-Indian settlement and exploration, especially mining.
