Research Projects: Anthropology/Archeology General Project Description Impact of humans on the environment in Washington and Sichuan: Stevan Harrell Anthropology , and Huo Wei (SU)). Both the North Pacific Coast of North America and Sichuan Province are characterized by extreme environmental diversity in a rather small geographic space. In Washington, this is primarily due to rainfall differences on an east-west gradient, and secondarily to altitude differences. Similarly, Sichuan has extreme environmental differences, but these are primarily due not to rainfall differences (which are rather small) but to the direct and indirect affects of altitude variation and extreme relief. Project Description for Fall 2001 The project for the American research group in Fall 2001 will involve a slightly different part of the American West, but one with a similar history and an environment very much like that of the eastern part of the state of Washington. The Upper Rio Grande bioregion is an area where traditional subsistence farmers, who have evolved an ecologically stable way of life over the past two centuries, are now confronted with disruption of their land and water systems due to capitalist interests including mining, ranching, and commercial farming.
