    Creative Non-Fiction
Students concentrating in creative non-fiction writing must repeat this course for five ten-week modules. It may be repeated for a sixth module if the student elects. The final module in Creative Non-Fiction Writing for those concentrating in the genre usually will emphasize compiling and polishing material to be submitted for the MFA thesis. Students concentrating in other genres may elect to enroll in Creative Non-Fiction Writing for one or two modules. The course will emphasize the techniques for developing a style for factual prose, incorporating reporting and interviewing, using description, and using other techniques borrowed from fiction writing. As scheduled by the instructor, students must write between 7,000 and 10,000 words of personal essays, memoirs, cultural criticism, or literary journalism during each module. Instructors will evaluate and respond to each submission either in an online workshop or through email or written communication. Other students and International Readers will comment upon each student's work in the online workshops. Students are expected to devote approximately 25 hours a week to their writing and workshops. At the end of the module the mentor and the readers will prepare evaluations of each student's work and the progress being made by that student.

The notes below will show you what you need to know.
Non-fiction texts are based on events in real life (which is not at all the same thing as being "true"!). Media texts are a particular kind of non-fiction text. You will find non-fiction and media writing in newspaper and magazine articles, posters, advertisements, leaflets and so on. Leaflets are important to understand as they often crop up in exams. They have two main purposes: to give information or advice and to persuade. Non-fiction writing also includes personal writing such as biography, autobiography and travel writing.
