Non-Fiction Writing- Prof. Townsend
Please submit a writing sample by the first day of class. Bring it to the English Department office. Non-Fiction Writing covers a lot of territory. Your sample could be descriptive or reflective prose, an example of your autobiographical or memoiristic writing, or it could simply be writing you have done for a class a paper, in other words. Professor Townsend will have a list of admitted students by the time the class meets on Tuesday.
Additional Information
Please put your name on every page of your writing sample. Your contact information (school, year, phone, e-mail) should go on the first page. Failure to submit material by the deadline will sharply reduce your chances of gaining admission to the course. If you need to know whether or not you've been admitted and you can't come to campus, call or e-mail Catherine Newman. Presenting Fakir Musafar's Amazing Non-Fiction Photo Magazine
UNUSUAL PEOPLE DOING UNUSUAL THINGS WITH THEIR BODIES
The printed version of BODY PLAY magazine was published from 1992 to 1999. It was my joy and pleasure to be able to create each new issue during this seven year period. It's nineteen issues have become a treasure trove of rare information and subject matter. They are now collectors items. However, it became increasingly difficult to continue publication. Subscriptions never exceeded 500 and distributors of alternative publications like BODY PLAY kept going bankrupt. Large retailers of magazines and books refused to handle a magazine like BODY PLAY. Between 1998 and 1999 some 1800 alternative publications were forced out of business by changing cultural and economic forces. BODY PLAY was one of them. We considered going online with the magazine in 1999. Again, cultural and economic forces conspired against us. The subject matter of BODY PLAY did not fit the mold of adult pay-to-see web sites. Internet users did not seem willing to pay for such a slender but content-rich and specialized web site. So in 2000, I decided to keep this web site open but free. In addition to offering a dwindling supply of printed back issues, new videos and rare mail order items, we will be adding personalized articles and photo stories on an occasional basis. Watch for our first internet photo articles on Branding and Cupping which will appear on these pages soon.

Outdated and mostly irrelevant biographical information dept: bypass this step Updated finally I'm no longer a recording and concert sound engineer(or pretended to be until I went more than half deaf from those Goddamned guitar playersyou know who you are). And I'm also no longer at the Spinner.com Web site . or Winamp.com. . I've taken the opportunity of being laid off by AOL to go to work full time for Ear Q Technologies , a company that builds hearing testing/analysis/corrective equalization hardware and software. It's a freaking pleasure to be doing something worthwhile for a change and not just herding people like cattele toward web sites and trying to trick them into clicking on things. Check out www.earq.net and see if you're as deaf as you're afraid you might be. heh heh. I'm no longer with EarQ, either, the company having become a casualty of the doomed US economy. I'm working at, oh, who cares? I drive away from Canyon in the wee dark early hours and come home in the evening. Every two weeks filthy lucre is auto-deposited in my bank accounts. It is an elegant arrangement. Ahem...

Visit often as this site will get updated on a regular basis. You'll never know what you'll find here! Bio: According to the family geneology Lareau's arrived in America around 1650 so I guess that makes me a 17th generation American. European Lareau's have been traced back to the Basque country and our current name may have derived from "larea" which is Basque for "by the meadow." Maybe Chris Meadows would be a good pseudonym for me.
Currently, I am a full-time freelance writer living in upstate New York with my wife, a dog, and a cat. I am a columnist for the Themestream website and a medical editor for BriefMe.com.
Prior to devoting my time to writing I was a primary care physician and still have my license to practice.

Journalism Professor Samuel Freedman's Legendary Book Writing Class Trains Some of Country's Best Authors By Abigail Beshkin Samuel Freedman When PEN announces its prestigious literary awards in non-fiction on May 15, two Columbia Graduate School of Journalism graduates will top the list of finalists in the non-fiction categories. No small feat for any journalist, winning the award is quite an accomplishment for emerging writers no more than five years out of journalism school. Still, it's not unheard-of for students in Samuel Freedman's book writing class. Freedman, who has taught the class since 1991, has seen four of his students' books hit the shelves in 1999. Last month, PEN named Philippe Wamba (J '94), as a finalist for the Martha Albrand Award for the Art of the Memoir for his book Kinship, (Dutton, August 1999) about relationships between Africans and African-Americans. The book earned praise from The Washington Post, Newsday, and Kirkus Reviews, and Wamba himself was the subject of a New York Times Magazine profile last August.

This is a posting of ideas for a career general plan to succeed as a fiction writer. Non-fiction writers may pursue a different path. It is meant as a GUIDELINE ONLY and was compiled from the ideas of many postings to the Usenet newsgroup misc.writing as well as other sources. This is not intended as a strict edict but rather as a list of possible steps a beginner may follow to a career in fiction writing, benefiting from some of the collective wisdom of many who have gone before them. Joan Elizabeth Lloyd is the author of 52 Saturday Nights: Heat Up Your Sex Life Even More with a Year of Creative Lovemaking , which has just been released in RocketEdition. She is also the author of Nice Couples Do and erotica collections like Bedtime Stories for Lovers . Joan agreed to answer questions about her new book, her experience as a writer of erotica, and her views on the discrete nature of ebooks. She also shares her thoughts on some common obstacles couples experience in their sex lives, particularly married and monogamous couples who find themselves beyond the "honeymoon phase" when just showing a little flesh to your new lover is a guaranteed turn-onread on.
When did you first begin writing? What attracted you to the erotica and "sex-help" genres? I began writing in 1990. I had learned about sex through a process of trial and error, making as many errors as I had successes. I found that books on sex were of no real help. Many were based on gimmicks, others on unrealistic expectations, still others on just plain drivel. Along the way I discovered a method of sexual communication, the key to any good relationship. I call it Bookmarking , using erotica to help a partner understand your needs and desires. I wrote my first book

    • On Being an Empath means, evidently, never having to communicate with anything outside of your own personal mind. We used to call that schizophrenia. We used to apply electricity to their brains until they either stopped doing it, became vegetative, or died. "Checking for Browser Type..." means that we have finally created a world that is Ugly. An Evolution of Love describes my attempt to recapture a simplicity of love. I knew this at one time, but I'm spending my life unprogramming what I've been taught. Having Your Cake and Eating it, Too briefly examines a commonly-used stupidity. Of course, the phrase derives from "having" meaning "to eat", but that would have sounded really stupid way back then. Besides, anyone with half a brain would have pointed out that vomitoriums existed for a reason. How to Communicate in case you've suddenly discovered that you're screwed, or (if you're luckier than I) someone else asks you to help them out of their screwed-up situation.
