Newsgroups: Resources from Connections
We believe that newsgroups provide one of the most powerful ways of discovering that writing takes place in a social context and the arguments must accommodate the multiple positions that develop around any topic. In Chapter Eight, we approach newsgroups from the angle of research. Although newsgroups are frequently discounted because some of them are geared toward topics that seem frivolous, there are a number of newsgroups that are specifically targeted toward debating serious professional issues. For more information, see Exercise 8.1 : Analyzing a Newsgroup
Exercise 8.2
: Critically Reading Newsgroup Messages
Exercise 8.3
: Analyzing a Thread in a Newsgroup In Chapter Thirteen we look at the social components of newsgroups, looking at the way that groups form communities and how you can join the debates taking place on newsgroups in successful ways. For more, see Exercise 13.1

Newsgroups: Resources and Information
Resources from Connections
We've exerpted useful material from the book and created links to exercises and discussions concerning newsgroups.
Connections Suggested Newsgroups
We've gone through the thousands of Usenet newsgroups and selected several that we believe will be valuable for composition classes. These aren't necessarily the best newsgroups on the Net, but they all get fairly heavy traffic, and they relate to topics that will broadly be of interest for composition classes. Think of this list as a starting point; a place to go when you're trying to get a sense for the kinds of conversations that take place on Usenet newsgroups. Note that we've linked these groups so that you can read them with your Web browser's newsreader. The interface on these newsreaders is sometimes quite difficult, so if you're having problems we suggest using a local client newsreaders.

What are Newsgroups? They are similar to listserves, but exist for public, not private, discussion. Listserves and Newsgroups. Both promote discussion or dissemination of information, but newsgroup postings are retained on news servers; they are not downloaded to a private email account when read. They are accessible to anyone world wide. Newsgroups readers often have software to help them "subscribe" to favorite groups, but there is no private email involved to view or submit a post. Virginia PEN and Newsgroups. Virginia PEN has a private domain for viewing around 1000 newsgroups. Some of these newsgroups are private for Virginia PEN users only, but many are public newsgroups that can be accessed through Virginia PEN. Dejanews Dejanews is a "clearing house" for newsgroup postings, and has a search engine to find postings by topic. However, it also has another benefit. For anyone having a valid email address loaded into their web browser, Dejanews has free newsgroup access found at My Dejanews The Help Index to learn more about the free services offered by Dejanews.

This type of research has, to-date never really been available in the easy and reliable format of E-Mail and the internet. It is very important that people understand that I am not a doctor or in the medical field in any way, so am not qualified to advise on Psoriasis treatments, but merely to make observation about how my psoriasis reacts to various treatments, and to try to vet the many touted Psoriasis cures already appearing on the internet. I cannot take any responsibility for your condition should you decide to use any of the observations that I make about myself. Enter your e-mail address to receive e-mail when this page is updated.
