Listservs used to be used generically to mean mailing lists. Now, since listserv is considered to be a specific type of software used to administer mailing lists, listserv is generally reserved to mean the software rather than the mailing lists. Mailing Lists are online lists to which recipients may voluntarily subscribe or unsubscribe in order to receive messages. The lists contain a series of messages from various subscribers discussing a series of "threads" or topics as defined by the subject headings of each message.
