Newfoundland and Labrador Newfoundland is one of Canada's ten provinces. It is an Atlantic or "Maritime" province. It can be found on the East Coast of the country, near the Atlantic Ocean. Newfoundland was Britain's first North American colony, claimed by John Cabot in 1497. Sir Gilbert officially proclaimed Newfoundland a colony of England in 1583. (To relate it to U.S. history, this was 3 years before the Virginia Colony of Roanoke and 37 years before Plymouth Rock). In 1931 Newfoundland became a Dominion, of equal status within the British Empire as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. However, the Great Depression caused problems for the Dominion and they reverted back to a colony of Great Britain. On June 22, 1948 a referendum on the future of the nation was held and Union with Canada narrowly won. Newfoundland joined the Canadian Confederation in 1949. The Newfoundland and Labrador provincial flag was adopted in 1980. The white represents snow and ice, the blue represents the sea; red represents human effort and gold represents our confidence in ourselves.

What's the Difference Between a Province and a Territory?
Canada has a constitution - the Constitution Act of 1982. The constitution talks about all sorts of things, like what our official languages are and what our individual rights are. The constitution works together with our system of laws to make up the rules of the country. The constitution also indicates what provinces are a part of Canada and what the powers of those provinces are. For example, provinces have jurisdiction over education and the environment. Territories on the other hand are created by Federal Law. That means the territories have a bit less power than the provinces. They still have representation in the federal government, but don't have provincial governments. The biggest difference is that the provinces get to vote on changes to the constitution but the territories do not.

by Matt Rosenberg February 23, 2003 On December 6, 2001, an amendment to Canada's federal Constitution Act officially approved a name change from the easternmost province of Newfoundland to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The move for change began in the early 1990s to provide "symbolic but important recognition of Labrador's status as a full and vital partner within the province, with its own unique geography, history and culture." (source) The name Newfoundland alone represents less than half of the territory of the province, which consists both of mainland Labrador in the north and island of Newfoundland in the south. Before the change Labrador was definitely neglected by the provincial name.

Newfoundland and Labrador Human History The human history of Newfoundland and Labrador has been strongly influenced by the natural environment, particularly marine resources and the western portion of the province, the forest industry. Recent years has seen a steady increase in tourism in this province as rural Newfoundland and Labrador endures one of Canada's largest ever population declines. (A term often refered to as "out migration") Tourist that want to enjoy some of the most quiet and leisurely environments in Canada come here to relax. While staying in Newfoundland and Labrador travellers take full advantage of our unparalleled hunting and fishing opportunities. Others enjoy outdoor adventures in our remote, sparsely-populated unspoiled wilderness. Our Newfoundland and Labrador outfitters provide tourist with lodging, travel arrangements, food, licences and amenities. The Landscape The landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador has had a remarkable geological history, formed over many millions of years by continental collision, mountain-building, volcanoes, oceans, rivers and ice sheets. The physical environment that has developed as a result is itself an important part of the region's heritage.

Gander, town, on east-central Newfoundland Island, in the province of Newfoundland, Canada. Gander developed after the site was chosen for the construction of an air base in 1935. During World War II (1939-1945), the airport served as an Atlantic base for British, Canadian, and United States aircraft. In 1945 the base became a civilian airport, which the Canadian government acquired in 1949 after Newfoundland became a province. The Air Control Center in Gander plays a major role in controlling flights over the North Atlantic. Gander was incorporated as a town in 1954. In 1985 an airplane carrying 256 passengers—248 of whom were U.S. soldiers returning from the Middle East—crashed after takeoff from Gander. All crew members and passengers were killed. The accident was the worst air disaster in Canada's history. Population 10,207 (1986); 10,364 (1996).

    Department of Geography
Geography is often defined as "the study of the earth as the home of humankind" . With such an all-encompassing mandate, geographers study all sorts of phenomena that influence human-earth interrelationships. By nature it is quite interdisciplinary and attempts to take a holistic approach. Geography was traditionally divided into two branches: physical (focusing on the earth, its landforms, climate, plants and animals) and human (migration, settlement patterns, economic activity) . In contemporary universities, these two fields of geography have been further subdivided as the discipline evolved. At Memorial, there are four main subfields of geography in which undergraduate students are required to complete courses. Research by faculty members can also be so categorized. Physical Geography: Climatological research has been done by MUN geographers for decades. Synoptic, local and microclimatology of Newfoundland and Labrador has been emphasized. Climate change as seen in Baffin Island glacier change and snow cover and composition in Gros Morne and Terra Nova National Parks has led to applied research with liaisons developed with geographers, earth scientists and chemists. Geomorphology of coastal environments and the associated relationships with climate change in Newfoundland and Scandinavia is a recent research area. Aeolian (wind) landforms both in Canada and Europe are studied, as are glacial (Quaternary) landforms in Labrador and Newfoundland. Late glacial and Holocene sea level history in Newfoundland and Labrador is another focus of geomorphology research. The research into sea levels in the Port au Choix area with an archaeologist has enabled the discovery of a Maritime Archaic Indian settlement. Integrating satellite imagery has enabled accurate terrain mapping of the Torngat Mountains, Labrador.

The Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) Chapter of the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada was established in 1986 through the efforts of VOCM Radio Newfoundland. In June of that year they carried a story about the Foundation starting in Canada and immediately Vice-President Elmer Harris was sent to Montreal to meet the Foundation's president and staff. VOCM then contacted Lloyd Matthews and asked him to head up the chapter in our province. To service the vast geography of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Foundation identified key persons in various regions to set up subchapters to create public awareness, assist with fund raising activities and to assist with the wish granting activities of the organization. In the years since 1986 the Foundation has granted 336 wishes across our province and grown to include 20 volunteer subchapter groups.
