The Parent Involvement Policy was adopted by the Board of Education on December 1, 2000.
Parent Involvement Beliefs:
The Board of Education of Buffalo believes that education is the shared responsibility of the student, parents, family, schools, and community and that the academic achievement and success of our students depend on the strength of the partnerships developed among these stake holders. For the purposes of this policy, parent is defined as any parent, guardian, and/or person in parental relation to a child or children. All parents in the district will be encouraged to become involved in the educational processes of their child(ren). Students, who are at the center of these partnerships, have unique skills, talents, and learning styles and ultimately are responsible for their own academic achievement. Parents and families provide their children with the foundation of their values, aspirations, and ways of knowing. Parents' knowledge of their children's unique histories, traditions, experiences, learning styles, resources, and challenges is a valuable resource that is critical to their child's successful achievement in school. To ensure success for all out students, the district will support parent involvement by providing a continuum of parent involvement opportunities, including all six of the following types taken directly from the Epstein model of the National Network of Partnership Schools:

TEA School Report Cards Communicate School Success Each Plano ISD school will distribute in January a School Report Card to the parents of PISD’s nearly 51,000 students. The reports, which are published annually as a result of a 1993 Texas Legislative Act, provide parents with a statistical analysis of student test scores, attendance and other indicators of school success and district achievements, as reported by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and Plano ISD. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Doug Otto, noted, “The School Report Cards provide yet another opportunity for us to communicate school success to our parents and community. Surprise safety check takes trucks off road
A safety inspection checkpoint on Route 28 near Waxpool Road Monday morning removed nine potentially dangerous trucks from the roads and cited 40 safety violations on other vehicles, according to a Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th), Loudoun County Sheriff Stephen Simpson, and officials from the Federal Motor Carrier Administration, the Virginia Department of Transportation and VDOT were on hand for the five-hour inspection.
“Most of the companies operating in this area do a good job,” Wolf said. “But there are some bad trucks out on the roads. We’ve seen some dangerous things today, things that could have ended up causing accidents if they were left on the road.”
From 1990 to 2001 there were 108,820 truck-related accidents in Virginia, resulting in 1,593 deaths, according to Wolf’s office.
“Some of the trucks we’ve seen have had bad brakes, multiple bad brakes on one vehicle, under-inflated or flat tires, all kinds of things,” Simpson said. “You can’t tell just by looking at the vehicle. It may look fine when it comes up in your rear-view mirror, but you don’t know if those brakes are working correctly or not.”

Board steps back from Sheriff’s audit
Budget on horizon leading to cutbacks

Obituaries Saving money The powers-that-be on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors are taking drastic actions to save money in the face of a budget crisis. This week, the Board voted not to spend a full $5,000 to assist the Dulles Rail Corridor Association. However, it may take more than that for the Board to leave a legacy of penny-pinching. We would remind the Supervisors that they have made a bad habit of handing out grants and love offerings to their friends for years now, and never batted an eye in spending $10,000,000 on property without a clue of what would be done with it. The full spending record is clear, and we will leave it to those who oppose them at the polls to produce a documented accounting. Chairman York himself commented this week that we just cannot afford to spend that $5,000. Supervisor Jim Burton, who was known to pinch a few pennies before he joined in the spending frenzy on the board, joined York on fixing the blame elsewhere as usual. In the case of the county budget problems, they said, the state is to blame. There is always a target for our board to aim their fingers. Burton, at this late date, says “county economists” warn that a property tax increase of as much as 26 cents may be needed. Among some boards, it is the practice to set up a large straw horse to cut it down to size when the budget is finalized. In this case, Burton thinks sound management may reduce any increase to 6 cents on the tax rate. What we do know is that Loudoun County taxpayers will be asked to spend more in the future. Some of it may be blamed on the state, but the economic warnings are not new, and the big county spending continued until Monday.

Friday, Oct. 5, 2001 Monday's City Council meeting canceled A special City Council meeting scheduled for Monday has been canceled due to lack of a quorum. City Manager Fred Stouder said the meeting will be rescheduled at a later date. Council offers Moynihan settlement for alleged violation of campaign finance law The City Council is offering Councilmember Bryant Moynihan a chance to settle out of court a complaint that he violated the city's campaign finance ordinance. The ordinance does not define "candidate." Moynihan has contended that because he had already won election, and has not declared any plans of running again in 2004 he is no longer a candidate. According to the city hall source, Steven Churchwell, the attorney Rudnansky hired to look into Cartwright's complaints has advised the council that in the absence of a definition in the ordinance, the definition contained in the California Political Reform Act applies. Under that act, anyone who is accepting contributions through a political committee is a candidate. A majority of the current council has indicated it wants to amend the ordinance. That may occur at the Oct. 15 council meeting.

Home Academics Kindergarten Student progress is reported in reading, math, science, social studies, motor skills, and personal growth. For the first and third marking periods, the teacher prepares a checklist that lets parents know the areas in which the child needs extra help at home. For the second and fourth marking periods, a report card is sent home using the following grading system: 1 (child has mastered the behavior or skill), 2 (child has reached an acceptable level of behavior/skill), 3 (child is developing the behavior/skill), 4 (child is seldom or not yet demonstrating the behavior/skill). Grades 1-2 Student progress is reported in reading, listening/speaking, writing, math, science, social studies, music, physical education, art, and personal growth. The report card uses the following grading system: E (excellent), VG (very good), G (good), S (satisfactory), N (needs improvement), and U (unsatisfactory progress).

Reference please! the district is currently to provide staff development in a way that is shown to raise teacher quality. In the past year, Dr. Johnson has worked to bring staff development to the classroom instead of remote course work that is not very effective. I'm a little confused here. Are you speaking of yourself in second person or is there another Dr. Johnson? Or a guest author. This sounds like a promising program are you recording data and do you have a research design to analyze the results? Middle School Study Where can this study be accessed?
