NEW INTERNET RESOURCE GUIDE FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS! ** note: This page has been translated from the original (submitted) resource document Some links may have been changed or moved.
This site is based on research conducted by Sally Moses.
This project focused on research of the resources available on the Internet. The end product was an Internet resource guide for use in a K12 media center by students, teachers, and media specialists. By targeting a varied audience, the researcher was able to discover the resources that were availablefor all the people that a media specialist may serve. In addition, the researcher focused on reference and bibliographic sources for students because those resources would benefit the greatest number of students. For media specialists and teachers, she (Sally Moses) chose resources that would support their professions.

Frequently Asked Questions What is the election for?

There are two ballot questions:
(1) A $70,010,100 GO Bond question, if approved, provides for new and renovated facilities throughout the district. GO Bond projects include building new schools and improving or adding classrooms, cafeterias, media centers, and providing technology support to instruction and student information systems.
A two-mill levy provides for improvements to every school in the district. These improvements include better heating and cooling systems for schools, new roofing, electrical upgrades to aging buildings, playground improvements and equipment purchases and upgrades. Can this money be used for salaries?
No. These funds may only be used for construction and renovation. What happens if the legislature splits up APS into smaller districts?
The funds generated through the GO Bond and mill levy will not be affected and every school will still receive funds for improvements, repairs or additions.

CDC awards funds to universities for research on how to prevent disease and injuries
As part of its new strategy to strengthen and expand the nation's public health research programs at universities, CDC announced today grants of $12.5 million to fund 50 research projects at academic health centers, research centers and university-affiliated programs across the country. The funding is part of CDC's Prevention Research Initiative, an effort to link the talents and skills of university-based scientists with the resources of health departments, community-based programs, and national organizations. "The awards ensure that public health research activities address problems affecting the nation's communities," says Dr. Jeffrey P. Koplan, director of the CDC. "The grants will help CDC and its partners conduct research that can directly improve community health and reduce the need for medical care." The grants cover a range of subjects, including prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, asthma, genetics and home, workplace and recreational injuries. (See complete list attached.) Activities include centers of excellence in prevention research, research projects to inform public policy, and research investigator training and development. The average grant is approximately $250,000. Most projects are funded for three years.

Passing Bond Issue "B" Will Help Education Locally and Statewide
(President Gamble Writes in Guest Column)

by Dr. Steven Gamble
President of Eastern New Mexico University
(The following guest column was originally written by Dr. Steven Gamble, president of Eastern New Mexico University, for the Portales News-Tribune.)
In a guest column he wrote for the Portales News-Tribune, President Gamble said, "While KENW continues to turn out some of the most qualified TV and radio broadcasting graduates in the country, the appearance of its facilities is making it increasingly difficult to compete in attracting students against universities that have more modern facilities."
(courtesy photo)

Approval of this issue will not only provide over $93 million for education statewide, but $5.25 million will stay right here in Portales for improvements at your hometown Eastern New Mexico University. The cost of this bond issue is less than $1.00 a month for the typical homeowner.
Included in this total is $4 million to build a new communications center at Eastern to house the KENW-TV and KENW-FM public broadcasting stations. The current metal structure was built in 1974 and was expected to have a maximum life expectancy of 20-25 years. Today, its wiring would not meet modern codes. During a recent rain storm, a 35-gallon trash can in one of the studios was filled to capacity with water from a leaking roof. With a mandate from the federal government for all television stations to go digital within the next few years, updating the facilities is absolutely critical.

Library Technology Raises Test Scores, Too Walter Minkel 12/1/2002
TechKnowledge > Research shows that technology coupled with a qualified librarian makes for better students Comment on this article It may be common knowledge among librarians that good school libraries run by trained media specialists have a direct link to higher standardized test scores. But did you know that media centers equipped with technology can improve test scores, too? "Kids achieve higher scores when they're skilled at seeking, finding, and using information available to them on the World Wide Web," says Lance, stressing that teaching basic information literacy skills prepares kids to perform well on these kinds of tests.

A Case Study of Wagon Mound (NM) School District and Its Role as a Partner in the NSF Supported UCAN Rural Systemic Initiative (RSI) Geographically, Wagon Mound is located in Mora County in the northeastern part of New Mexico. The nearest city with a population of 15,000 or more is Las Vegas, New Mexico, some 40 miles southeast; to the north is Raton with a population of less than 10,000. The town of Wagon Mound is at the intersection of highways 120 and I-35, which provide immediate north, south, east, and west access. Surrounded by the Corunudo Hills and just east of the Turkey Mountains and southeast of the Kiowa National Grasslands, the area provides a picturesque setting of diverse environmental conditions. The state capital is located in Santa Fe, which is approximately 100 miles southeast via I-35, which extends from El Paso to beyond Denver.
