LINWOOD, New Jersey (AP) When Schools Superintendent Edwin Coyle wanted to find out where some of his students were sleeping, he did what a suspicious spouse might he hired a private investigator to tail them. But it wasn't philandering he feared. Coyle's school district wanted to crack down on students who don't live in the three towns that make up the district. Envious of the wealthy suburban district's strong academics, extracurricular offerings and good reputation, out-of-towners are falsifying proof-of-residence documents so their children can attend Mainland Regional High School and the district's other schools. Plaintiffs move for partial summary judgment to enjoin the teaching of the "Science of Creative Intelligence" in the public schools of New Jersey on the ground that such teaching violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The material facts are not contested, although the parties vigorously dispute the significance of those facts. The suit involves 12 named plaintiffs and 20 named defendants. Plaintiffs include eight individuals who pay federal income taxes and are liable to pay state sales taxes and, in some cases, local property taxes. Four of the taxpayers are the parents of two children who attend one of the high schools at which the course was offered; they sue in their own behalfs [sic] and as guardians ad litem for their children. The eight taxpayers comprise an unincorporated association known as the Coalition for Religious Integrity, which also is a named plaintiff in this action. The remaining plaintiffs are a clergyman who lives in New Jersey, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a nonprofit Maryland corporation, and Spiritual Counterfeits Project, Inc., a nonprofit California corporation.

ABOUT THE COALITION BACKGROUND In recent years a number of reports, including the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics and Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, collectively referred to as the Standards , and Everybody Counts and Counting on You of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board and the Board on Mathematical Sciences, have contained specific recommendations for making substantial improvements in mathematics education. Although individual teachers and administrators in New Jersey have responded to the challenges of these reports, only a concerted and coordinated effort can lead to fundamental changes throughout the state. This is where the New Jersey Mathematics Coalition plays a critical role. By drawing all segments of the community together education, business, government, and the public the Coalition has served as a catalyst and coordinator of a truly statewide effort to improve mathematics education. The New Jersey Mathematics Coalition (like the other 50 such state Coalitions) was created to facilitate and encourage improvement in the teaching and learning of mathematics as recommended in the national reports.
