The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804) and the explorations of Zebulon M. Pike (1806) increased knowledge of the country, but the activities of the fur traders were more immediately valuable in terms of settlement. Manuel Lisa, a fur trader, probably established the first trading post in the Nebraska area in 1813. Bellevue, the first permanent settlement in Nebraska, first developed as a trading post. Steamboats and Wagon Trains Steamboating on the Missouri River, initiated in 1819, brought business to the river ports of Omaha and Brownville. The natural highway formed by the Platte valley was used extensively by pioneers going west over the Oregon Trail and also the California Trail and the Mormon Trail. History Gothenburg, Nebraska, is proud of its Swedish heritage. Gothenburg was founded in 1882 by Olof Bergstrom, a native of Hassela, Sweden, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. Gothenburg, Nebraska, and Göteborg, Sweden, are the only two Gothenburgs in the World. Bergstrom selected the site that was to be Gothenburg and located a farmstead about a mile north. The Union Pacific Railroad laid out the original town of eight blocks. The town was laid out parallel with the railroad tracks but not with the world, which accounts for the bend in the city's streets. Mr. Bergstrom returned to Sweden and enticed a number of people to migrate to Gothenburg. He told them it was to be a Swedish town so they would not have to learn English. The first business building was erected by E.G. West in the spring of 1883. The Union Pacific depot was built in October 1884. The first newspaper appeared on Saturday, May 9, 1885. Gothenburg reached a population of 300 and was incorporated as a town on July 8, 1885. The first church was completed in 1886. A boom occurred in the early 1890s when a canal, lake and powerhouse were built to generate electric power. A barbed wire factory, pickling works, galvanized iron works, lead pipe works, sheet copper rolling mill, brass foundry, boiler iron works, and bathtub factory were some of the firms that located in Gothenburg in the 1890s.

Kearney Nebraska's The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument Battle of Plum Creek (12 August 1840) The boldest and most concentrated of the Indian invasions on Texas, and the deepest into the heart of Texas soil, occurred in August of 1840 and culminated in the Battle of Plum Creek. Hostilities between the Indians and the Texans had been steadily escalating for several years. They reached a peak in early 1840 in what became known as the Council House Fight in San Antonio. The Indians had come to San Antonio on what started out as a peace mission, but a dispute ended in the death of seven Texans and over thirty-five Indians. As a result, the already diminished trust between the Texans and Indians totally collapsed, and the Indians began making plans for retaliation. The counterstrike began in early August, when a war party of about 600 Comanches and Kiowas descended from the Texas hill country all the way to Victoria and nearby Linnville on the Gulf of Mexico. They carefully avoided the settlements on the Guadalupe valley, and thus made the trip undetected when they reached Victoria on the afternoon of August 6. After raiding and looting on the Texas coast, the Indians began their return, backtracking northward just east of the Guadalupe river.

Nebraska, The Land and the People, Vol. 1 John M. Thayer and A. J. Poppleton. Within a year after the opening of the territory, land near the town sites sold for as much as $400 an acre. One of the chief events of the year 1855, referred to by the Nebraskans of that day as the “Catfish war,” originated in an Indian alarm from Fontanelle, a settlement about forty miles to the northwest of Omaha, near the Elkhorn River. The colony had been organized at Quincy, Illinois, in June, 1854, and in September of that year had sent an advance guard to Bellevue, Nebraska. A tract of land on the east side of the Elkhorn was located in the spring of 1855 settlement was made by the colony. A town site two miles square was laid out named in honor of Logan Fontanelle, a half-breed leader of the Omaha Indian tribe, and also grounds for a university and for the state capital, which the colonists fondly expected to secure. On July 30, 1855, a courier arrived at Omaha from Fontanelle with news that the Sioux had raided the settlement and killed two persons. Governor Izard at once sent to the aid of the settlement a force of forty men, under John M. Thayer

History Known as the "frontier guardians of the Sioux Nation" which ranges from Minnesota to the northern Rocky Mountains in Montana and south through the northwestern part of Nebraska, the Santee division of the Sioux Nation was called the Dakota and consisted of four bands. In the English lanuage Dakota translated to mean "allies" or "friends". The four bands were the Mdewakantonwan, Wahpeton, Sissetonwan and the Wahpekute. A woodlands tribe, the Santee lived in semi-permanent villages and engaged in agriculture/farming. hunts were conducted twice a year. Around 1660, French explorers were the first Europeans to encounter the Santee Sioux. Due to their forced relocation to the plains, their culture soon resembled that of the nomadic Tribes to the west. The biggest tragedy to befall the Santee was the "Uprising of 1862". Broken promises by an apathetic government left the Santee facing eventual starvation. Mistrust felt by settlers and the Santee led to isolated outbreaks of violence. An argument between two young Santee men over stolen eggs from a white farmer became a dare to kill. This resulted in the killing of three white men and two women. Anticipating retaliation by "bluecoats", the Santee took the offensive, but were soon forced to surrender under the overpowering attack of U.S. troops. As a result of this short lived uprising, 38 Santee were mass executed in Mankato, Minnesota, in December of 1862. In 1863, Congress abrogated all existing treaties between the Santee and the government. They were exiled to a site in South Dakota called Crow Creek. Over 300 Santee died during the first months there, mostly from disease and malnutrition. Encounters with prejudice and a deceptive government eventually led them to their current home in Nebraska. This settlement of the Santee in this region ended their tragic removal from their Minnesota homeland to South Dakota and finally to Nebraska in 1866.

Churches V ERDIGRE, N EBRASKA located in Knox County in northeast Nebraska, was established by Bohemian settlers in the beautiful Verdigris Valley, and was platted on July 12, 1887 by George Quimby. Some of the first establishments included two saloons, a post office, & a hotel or restaurant. Among the first settlers was "Old Jules" Sandoz, father of Mari Sandoz, famous author of the book, "Old Jules". The first school was reported to have operated during the year of 1888-89, and in 1889 a schoolhouse was put up. In 1892 a catastrophic fire started by an attempt to blast open a safe burned the south half of Main Street on the west side. Many businesses were destroyed. Fires continued to plague Verdigre in its early years. Blizzards, tornadoes, drought, fires, floods, and other acts of nature seemed to continually ravage in the area. In 1914 Verdigre withstood a terrible flood, and again in 1935.

County History home history Location: Saunders County is in eastern Nebraska. The Platte River forms the northern and eastern boundary of Saunders County and played a role in the development of the area. South of the river, the Burlington Railroad controlled, while the area to the north belonged to the Union Pacific Railroad. At one time, the river flowed across the county from the northwest corner diagonally to the southeast corner at Ashland. Today this old river bed is called the Todd Valley. The land is fertile and settlers drew lumber from the trees which lined the river, as well as fish and wildlife. A Brief History: Native Americans inhabited the area as many as 6000 years ago. Contact with European fur traders in the 1700's brought contagious diseases such as small pox to these people and their population reduced. The Otoe and Pawnee lived in the area until they were forced to relocate by the government in the 1850's. Nebraska became a territory in 1854. The first Territorial Governor was Frances Burt of Saunders County and the fifth was Alvin Saunders, whom the county was named.
