    Goddesses in World Mythology
MARTHA ANN and DOROTHY MYERS IMEL

"In the beginning people did not work, because the sky was so close to the Earth, they could just reach up and cut off a piece of it to eat. One day, Greedy Woman cut of an enormous chunk of the sky and, even with the help of the whole village, there was no way to finish it so she had to throw the remainder away. The sky was angry about this and rose high above the Earth so the people could no longer take pieces for food. Now people must work for their food." Greedy Woman, the Nigerian goddess responsible for humans having to work for their living is just one of the many thousands of women who populate world mythology. In every culture throughout the ages, women have played an intricate part in the mythical traditions that make up the voices of generations past. Yet, despite the rich diversity of these figures, researchers, archaeologists, and linguists have tended to give them short shrift. A unique and easy-to-use guide to female deities

Jenni Ross I'm an archaeologist, specializing in the cultures and history of the ancient Near East, particularly (but not limited to) Mesopotamia. In my work, I integrate archaeological with textual evidence in an effort to gain a greater understanding of ancient cultures, while understanding that each category of evidence comes burdened with a set of inherent problems and biases. I have a particular interest in the organization of technological production - from ceramic and metal workshops to textile mills - and the traces this leaves in the material record. I am also involved in an on-going archaeological project in central Turkey, at the site of Kerkenes Dag . This project features the use of technologically advanced survey methods (GPS and magnetometry), in conjunction with traditional excavation, in its approach to a first millennium B.C. urban center. At Hood, I coordinate the concentration in Archeology within the Art major, as well as the Classical Studies minor. My courses include classes on ancient art, archeology, and mythology.

    CONTENTS

In Part One, Alan Alford provides the reader with a complete background to the telling of the Atlantis story, the focus being (a) on the Greek myths and (b) on the philosophy of Socrates and Plato.
In Part Two, the Greek myths of the gods and the cosmos are traced to parallels and precedents in earlier, Near Eastern civilisations.
In Part Three, the reader is introduced to the Exploded Planet hypothesis of ancient religions and myths. To begin, Alan Alford explains that the religions of the Near East were exploded planet cults. Then, he builds a compelling case that ancient Greek religion, too, was an exploded planet cult, and that Plato was initiated into its secret.
