The Indian flag is a horizontal tricolour in equal proportion of deep saffron on the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom. The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is two is to three. In the centre of the white band, there is a wheel in navy blue to indicate the Dharma Chakra, the wheel of law in the Sarnath Lion Capital. This center symbol or the 'CHAKRA', is a Buddhist symbol dating back to 200th century BC. Its diameter approximates the width of the white band and it has 24 spokes, which intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation. The saffron stands for courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; the white, for purity and truth; the green for faith and fertility. The design of the National Flag of India was adopted by India's constituent assembly on 22nd july, 1947. It's use and display are regulated by a code. The flag symbolizes freedom. The late Prime Minister Pandit Nehru called it a flag not only of freedom for ourselves, but a symbol of freedom for all people.

Although I remember doing homework with the television on, as a mom I rail against my kids when I see them trying to do the same.

  • Tracing growth of the United States , from the time of early European exploration and the Native American foundation to the Civil War. This is a thematic study of history. We will be making connections between the past and present examining current events. Looking at history through a number of different lenses. Examining it from a number of different perspectives. The essential questions will help to guide us through our study of American History. A few of the essential questions are listed below.
What is history? Whose history is it? How did we evolve from colony to country? Who are we as a nation and what are our values and traditions? What are our responsibilities to ourselves and to society at large? What has been the balance of freedom and order throughout American history?

Course Description
Contemporary American realism often finds its best expression in Adolescent Literature , a genre that has expanded in terms of quality, scope and theme during the last ten years. In the novels of authors such as Naomi Shihab Nye, Walter Dean Myers, and Lois Ann Yamanaka, traditional Adolescent Literature motifs of identity formation and sexual awakening are linked to issues of race, nationality, and social justice, enabling young readers to acknowledge the complexity of the coming of age experience in the United States and abroad.

ENGLISH Our writing program focuses on the process of writing an analytical paper. We help our students learn how to find a suitable thesis; how to research a text to find support for the thesis; how to narrow or expand the thesis to fit the assignment; how to organize according to what the thesis says and to its logic; how to use rough drafts to develop the analytical position, to discover the information that must be in the introduction, to check for errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics, and to come to a conclusion that follows the positions and the logic of the paper. Just as in our class discussions, we insist that our students in their writing support all analytical ideas by quoting directly from the text or texts under consideration. We also involve our students in literature through writing personal essays, short stories, and poems, especially as these discuss or develop issues closely linked to those of a text under study. Students must be enrolled and earn credit in an English class during each quarter they are enrolled at University High School. Freshmen and sophomores take year-long courses. Juniors and seniors may elect to take Analysis and Composition, a year-long course, during either their third or fourth year at University High School. Juniors and seniors not taking Analysis and Composition elect one of three courses each quarter.
English l is a year-long course that introduces its students to the analysis of literature and the fundamentals of writing. In the past few years, students have studied such major works of literature as parts of Genesis

Overview:
Journeys West engages students in inquiry into the theme of journeys through the exploration of topics such as the Louisiana Purchase, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the California Gold Rush, the Oregon Trail, Fur Traders and Native American perspective. Students learn about diverse groups of people who left their homes to start a new life as well as the native people they encountered along the way. Students understand that personal experiences of ordinary people help create our nation's history. These travel experiences were vastly different depending upon ethnic heritage, economic class or the motivation to travel. Understanding the viewpoints and personal experiences presented in primary sources is essential for understanding of this time in American History. Objectives: Through the Journeys West project students will be able to:

  • Effectively access online primary sources.
Critically evaluate and gather information from a first person narrative.

As you begin to prepare for AP History, a few things to keep in mind: 1. This is a college level course with advanced vocabulary, reading and comprehension requirements. It is absolutely essential that you are a self-motivated learner. It will be my expectation that each student comes to class prepared with homework assignments completed. 2. There is very little "busy work" or simple assignments that enable a student to artificially pad their grade. Your grades for each marking period will reflect how well you understand the material we have covered. 3. You will be given a course syllabus on the first day of school. In this you will be given deadlines, other expectations and long-range goals of the class. It will be your responsibility to keep up with the material we are covering and have assignments in when they are due. Late work will automatically be graded down unless you have made prior arrangements 4. It is strongly suggested that you not be employed while taking an AP course, especially on school nights. Expect at least an hour of homework every night.
