Just as the culture of the Afrikaners differs significantly from that of the German-speaking community and as both of those cultures differ from that of the more varied technical-assistance community, so do African and Creole cultures differ. The Rehobothers closely resemble the rural Afrikaner culture of the mid-20th century, while the Nama have more in common with the other pastoral black communities, and the “Cape Coloured” have a distinct urban culture with both black and European elements. The northern black cultures—while distinctive as to language and forms of music and dance—formed out of a mixed farming context unlike that of the Damara and Herero. The San are a tragic case. The fishing and tourist industries also contribute significantly to the nation's economy. Commercial production of food crops, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, maize, millet and sunflower seed remains limited. Economy Germany held Namibia as a colony from 1885 to 1915. With the outbreak of World War I, South Africa joined the Allied Powers and declared war on Germany. A force of South African troops invaded South West Africa and forced the Germans to surrender on July 9, 1915. After the war ended, Namibia moved from German control to an administration by the South African government. In 1960, the South West Africa People's Organization, or SWAPO, was formed through the combination of two organizations which opposed South Africa's control of the country. Over the next several years SWAPO became the leading opposition political party within Namibia, while simultaneously establishing overseas representation and sending hundreds of its members abroad for military training. SWAPO initially held back from a military confrontation with South Africa, in the hope that independence could still be achieved peacefully.

Windhoek - History Millions of years ago a dinosaur walked across a stretch of mud. Namibia has a colourful and turbulent history. In the mid-19th century, German missionaries opened up the interior, paving the way for traders who came later. The annexation of the country by Germany in 1884 accounts for the distinctive German architecture and traditions. After a turbulent past, the country at last became independent on 21 March 1990, and is now peacefully approaching the twenty-first century became independent in 1990, when South Africa's control was finally diminished by the United Nations and the guerrilla group known as SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization.) Germany controlled the area until World War I, when South Africa invaded the colony and imposed 75 years of rule. The rock paintings in Daramaland bear witness to this period. Around 1300, the Namas and the Damaras came from the north pushing the Bushmen towards the Kalahari Desert. Around 1500, the Owambos settled on the high plateaus and in the Okavongo delta. Around 1600, Herero herdsmen arrived from the north. With the beginning of German migration from 1850 onwards, Germany annexed Namibia and in 1884 made war on the local ethnic groups. By 1907, this war had claimed the lives of half of the Africans. Germany then introduced racial segregation and the exploitation of the diamond mines begun.

Chapter Three People and Culture PEOPLE The population Statistics indicate that the average life expectancy for a Namibian is 65 years. Around 86% of the population are black African in origin, and the remaining 14% are mostly of European or mixed race. However, the statistics say nothing of the charm of many Namibians, and if you venture into the rural areas you will often find that Namibians are curious about you. Ethnic groups When the colonial powers carved up Africa, the divisions between the countries bore virtually no resemblance to the traditional areas of the various ethnic groups, many of which therefore ended up split between two or more countries. As you will see, there are cultural differences between the groups in different parts of Namibia, but they are only a little more pronounced than those between the states of the USA, or the regions of the (relatively tiny) UK.
