82. Don Croner's World Wide Wanders: Mongolia | Secret History Of The Mongols
During an earlier stay in mongolia I decided to visit the site atKhödöö Aral where the Secret history was supposedly written.
http://www.chenresig.com/Secret/SecretHistory.html
The Mongolian chronicle known as the Secret History In 1204, while fighting and subduing the Naiman, a tribe which occupied much of western Mongolia, including the modern-day aimags of Bayan-Olgii, Uvs, Khovd and Gov-Altai, Chingis' men captured a Uighur scholar named Tatatunga who had been employed as a scribe by the Naiman ruler Tayang Khan. The Uighurs themselves, after the fall of their empire in Mongolia and the destruction of their capital of Karabalgasun by marauding Kyrgyz from the upper Yenisei valley in Siberia, had migrated to the southwest and eventually developed an elaborate, highly literate society centered around the oases at the eastern end of the Tarim Basin, in what is now part of China. The learned men among the Uighurs were much in demand by lesser developed peoples who aspired to some degree of culture. Such a man was Tatatunga, who had hired himself out to the Naiman.
One the first students of the Uighur scribes who introducing reading and writing among the Mongolians was a man named Shigihutag, an adapted step-brother of Chingis himself. As we shall see, the authorship of the Secret History The first use of the Uighur script by Mongolians in a literary document, as opposed to an inscription on a stele, we are aware of is the

Women In Mongolia
Rebecca's Question:

I have been studying Mongolia for over 3 years now and have had little luck in finding information concerning women. Especially, women warriors. If at all possible, I would love to know what sources you used for these articles. Lyn's Answer:
I'm sorry to say that I cannot point you to one terrific source. My write-up came from a various of places, and from bits and pieces in each source. Following are some of the sources I used: 1) A writeup I got off the WEB called "Women of the Mongol Court."
http://www.woodrow.org/teachers/world-history/teaching/mongol/women.html
2) Fatima Mernissi, "The Forgotten Queens of Islam," University of Minnesota Press, 1993, has a section on the Mongol Khatuns. 3) David Jones, "Women Warriors: A History", Brassey's,1997, mentions a Koquz Khatun who led an army into battle conjointly with her husband. And Mandughai Khatun in 1470 took the field to defend the khanate for her 5 year old son. Also Goland Khatun who died beside her husband in battle in 1696. His source seems come from Chinese sources quoted in Florence Ayscough, "Chinese Women," Decapo Press, NY, 1975. 4) H.H. Vreeland, "Mongol Community and Kinship Structure" and Fred Barth, "Nomads of South Persia" - both have some information on the history of women.

Despite a long period of Soviet communist control this century, and the massacre of two generations of monks and scholars, Mongolia is now experiencing a revival of a spiritual way of life that had long defined its culture. Buddhism arrived in Mongolia in the third century B.C.E. with silk traders from India. It flourished for centuries until, in 1577 C.E., the Mongolian title Dalai ("Ocean of Wisdom") was bestowed on a visiting Tibetan lama, Sonam Gyatso, by the ruling King of Mongolia in 1577, thus creating the lineage of the Dalai Lamas of Tibet. By the twentieth century, after a peaceful communist revolution that should have brought independence, the country was caught in a political struggle with China, and sought sanctuary in Soviet military support. But by the 1930s, Mongolia was under complete Soviet control and suffered violent purges in every aspect of the culture. Over 60,000 monks, nuns and scholars were killed or incarcerated. All but three of the 700 monasteries were destroyed. Suppression under communist rule lasted over seventy years. However in 1989 Mongolia gained independence from Soviet domination and adopted a democratic government.

Shamanism The native religion of Mongolia is, like the language, related to the Turkish tradition and would also have similarities with the Tibetan Bön. In general this religion is referred to as shamanism (Heissig 1980). Rather often shamanism refers to a specific form of this religious phenomena present in Siberia, and although there is a relation with this form it is not the same (Heissig 1980: 6). Above this `shamanism´ implies that a religious specialist is needed and central to it’s faith and practices while in fact it is an animist religion with an arsenal of beliefs and practices in which a shaman not necessarily is involved. This native religion is not unequivocal, with a unequivocal doctrine,  but rather a diversity of  local beliefs and practices, which by a number of common characteristics can be lumped together. Central in this belief is the worship of the Blue, Mighty, Eternal Heaven ( köke tngri, erketü tngri, möngke tngri

Mysterious Mongolia is just opening up to the outside world. This nation, which is mostly nomadic, still sees few tourists and maintains its culture and religion much as it has for the past several centuries. In this trip we visit museums, monasteries and temples and spend the night in a Mongolian ger, the traditional felt tent of nomadic herders.
Citizens of most Asian nations can visit Mongolia without a visa for a certain period of time. Please check with the Mongolian Embassy or Consulate in your country.
