Introduction O n these web pages I will try to introduce you to the fascinating world of plastic model building.
First of all, let's focus on what plastic model kits are not: they are not toys. In fact, the finished models are too fragile to be handled except with the greatest care. You can't give them to the kids to play with, and you can't even use them as doorstops or paperweights.
A plastic model is actually totally unusable when finished - their only purpose is to sit on the shelf, collecting dust and look great (or even cute as my wife would say). But as any model builder would agree, managing to catch the spirit of a powerful real life object in miniature form is a truly fulfilling experience. A-7E Corsair II M ost models depict a vehicle of some kind: a car, a truck, a ship, a tank or an aircraft. Since I am an aviation enthusiast, I will on these pages most often refer to models of aircraft, but most of the time the same techniques apply to all other types of models as well. Aircraft models most often represent military objects. It is not because model builders particularly like war or combat but because the coolest aircraft are and have always been used as instruments of destruction.

What This Is
This WWW resource is maintained by the Fermilab Theoretical Physics Department. Its primary purpose is to provide detailed results of current efforts in superstring model building.
What Is Here Now
Right now the database contains sample superstring models which have free fermionic realizations, using the formalism developed by Antoniadis, Bachas, and Kounnas , and Kawai, Lewellen, Schwartz, and Tye . The complete light spectrum of physical states in the fermionic construction can be generated using the symbolic manipulation package Spectrum Annotated output for some sample models is available now via the links below. In its current form this output is probably not very illuminating unless you are already familiar with the fermionic construction. Most of the models here are examples of CHL strings.

The event was also supported by the Sonderforschungsbereich 386 at the Institute of Statistics, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. Topic: Generally speaking, every model is plausible as long as it is not falsified. The falsification of models however is the most challenging point in science. This holds in the same for statistical models. To provide valid Statistical Models that fulfil the task of modelling reality, it is of fundamental importance to consider the model building process in more depth and to check and validate fitted models by means of

Plastic Model Building Mania
Welcome. This site is dedicated to the art and craft of assembling plastic figure models old and new.
Feb 28: I get quite a few emails from folks who visit the site, and remark about how it brought back fond memories of their childhood model building. That's great! It's why I created this little corner of cyberspace. Recently, a guy emailed and told me that several years ago he'd checked out the site, and the model of the Pirate of the Caribbean in particular brought back memories. In fact, he began haunting ebay, and picking up the occasional model kit from the series that appeared. He now has the complete series, and a great webpage with pictures of the models that you simply must check out. It's at Pirates of the Caribbean. By the way, Disney is doing a movie of that same title this summer. Feb 2003: No, I haven't abandoned the website. The problem is, I've ran into the limit of free storage space that AOL is gracious enough to provide as part of paying for their service (my Wife also uses some space for her own reasons, and like a shared closet, it doesn't take long to fill up). Sometime in the near future I'll look into finding some cheap space and put more models on for your enjoyment. Now, on with the show... As a young boy growing up in the 60's I saved up money from mowing lawns to pay for my hobby of model building. I would put together a lot of cars, of course. My passion was reserved for the great monster and superhero models produced by Aurora and other companies. My buddies and I would visit each other's room to show off our latest work, and hoped for the ultimate reaction of "Oh, WOW!"

Model building Tips
Busted!! Several of my brushes had disappeared, eventually found stashed under the couch! This section is dedicated to the basics of plastic model building. There are many websites out there devoted to models, but most assume the reader is an experienced builder. If you're just getting started or still unhappy with the results of your work, perhaps something here will help.
When reading the instructions and recommended tools listed in these pages, keep in mind the age of the potential model builder. A sharp exacto knife is standard equipment for working on these models, but for a pre-teenage child such a tool is dangerous. Adult supervision and help is necessary, this hobby can be a great bonding and learning experience between parent and child. Learning how to build a model kit teaches a child patience, planning, and hand-eye coordination. Don't expect a child just learning to enjoy the frustration of trying and failing to build a model too advanced for their experience, but on the other hand you want them to be challenged and not every model has to come out "perfect". One last point: While I've tried to anticipate and cover all the basic questions people have when learning how to work with plastic, glue, and paint, this should be considered a starting point only in learning the hobby. Feel free to email me with requests for additional information, if I don't know the answer I can point you to people who will. There are other model builders on the net who will be happy to give their own answers and recommendations, you won't find a more helpful group of folks anywhere. One place I highly recommend is the Polar Lights Bulletin Board at

What is AMBER?
Assisted Model Building with Energy Refinement AMBER refers to two things: a set of molecular mechanical force fields for the simulation of biomolecules (which are in the public domain, and are used in a variety of simulation programs); and a package of molecular simulation programs which includes source code and demos. The current version of the code is AMBER version 7, which is sold by UCSF subject to a licensing agreement as described below. AMBER is developed in an active collaboration of David Case at The Scripps Research Institute, the Kollman group at UCSF, Ken Merz at Penn State, Tom Cheatham at the University of Utah, Carlos Simmerling at SUNY-Stony Brook, Tom Darden at NIEHS, Piotr Cieplak at accelrys , and Dave Pearlman at Vertex Pharmaceuticals . Amber was originally developed under the leadership of Peter Kollman, and Version 7 is dedicated to his memory.
New features for Amber 7
Amber 7 (2002) represents a significant change from Amber 6, which was released in December, 1999. Briefly, the major differences include:

INTRODUCTION
Errors in structures come in different classes of gravity [1-3]. At its worst, all or part of a protein trace may be wrong. Methods have been developed to help identify such models; they make use of our knowledge of protein structure [4,5]. In less severe cases, the local main chain and side chains may be wrong. If we divide the regions making up the first model of a molecule into three classes, good, bad, and ugly, then the perfect refinement would result in a final model in which all atoms fall into a fourth category, excellent. Unfortunately, due primarily to lack of resolution, this situation rarely occurs and we must usually be satisfied with a model that lacks ugly regions, and contains a high percentage of excellent ones. In order to arrive at such a final model, both good refinement and good rebuilding practices are necessary. e.g.

Model Building Tutorial
Model buiding is the process where multiple range images are registered and then integrated into a single seamless surface model. Multiple programs from Mesh Toolbox are iteratively applied during model building.
Step 1: Take Range Images
Before model building, range images of the object to be modeled should be taken. The range images should cover all surfaces of the object, and each range image should have at least one other range image with which it has at least 50% overlap. For single objects, good results have been obtained with 10 to 20 views, each taken about 45 degrees apart. If a textured model is desired, then a camera image along with the projection matrix that maps sensed 3-D points to image coordinates (before any alignment) need to be available for each range image. Since the sensor origin is expected to come from a projection matrix during integration by IntegrateMeshes, each range image must have a projection matrix associated with it even if no camera image exists for the range image. See Data Formats for hints on how to construct projection matrices that only encode the sensor origin.
Step 2: Convert Range Images to Surface Meshes
The next step is to convert the range images into surface meshes. For dense range images, this is done by connecting range pixels across the rows, columns, and diagonally across rows and columns. Some sensors or sensing algorithms do not produce dense range images (e.g., feature based stereo). In this case the connectivity of the 3-D points should come from a triangulation of the rows and columns of the range pixels.

A model building project D eciding which model to buy and build can be pretty tough sometimes. There are thousands of models you can choose from, but most model builders like to stick to a certain type of model, scale and to a certain time in history - like German aircraft in scale 1/72 from World War Two.
Many modelers find great pleasure in buying kits - to be built at some later time. A stack of unbuilt models can be found in the homes of good many model builders, and some people can have as many as fifty or more unfinished kits stashed away. It may seem quite silly, but any model enthusiast will fully understand the magic of the moment when the shrink-wrap is removed from a new model kit, when the box is opened, that unmistakable smell of fresh plastic is released, and as the part trees are examined for the first time. Your local toy shop may have a selection of Spitfires, Tomcats and Me-109's and some of the most popular model planes. They are often old models from a mainstream manufacturer, such as Airfix or Revell. You can also purchase a selection of old Humbrol enamel paints which are more or less unusable, having been sitting on the shelf for several months, or even longer.
