THE MIDDLE EAST ARABIC SCRIPT
This guide to the Arabic alphabet and writing styles also offers an overview of a culture and a civilization. The Koran places great importance on writing, and in the first verse of the holy book, reading and writing with the calamus, or reed pen, are praised as the source of all knowledge and all spiritual or scientific paths of change. Eventually Arabic script gave rise to calligraphic art. More highly regarded than painting, Arabic calligraphy is approached aesthetically like music, with its own rules of composition, rhythm, and harmony. The pictures illustrate the letters, their variants, and calligraphic adaptations; the text explains the history and meaning of each letter, as well as its philosophical, theological, and cultural significance. While this book will be appreciated by linguists, graphic designers, and collectors of Islamic Art, it is also handy for travellers who wish to become familiar with the rudiments of the alphabet.

Open only to newly admitted first year students. It may serve as a Distribution Requirement course. HUM 199Y Empire and Independence in the Middle East
This seminar course looks at the experiences of Middle Eastern peoples over the last two centuries. In that time old indigenous empires gave way to various forms of European colonial rule, followed by the emergence of independent states whose societies grapple with the legacies of their imperial pasts. The readings, discussions, and films will emphasize the human dimension of these various transformations, in an attempt to rectify the impersonal abstractions that often characterize studies of the Middle East.

Middle East
This book covers Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey.
Facts and Figures
Percentage of wonders of the ancient world in the Middle East: 71.4% Largest burial ground in the world: Valley of the Mummies: 6 miles of tombs holding 10,000 mummies Sinking rate of the Dead Sea: 13 inches per year Quality of prayer during Ramadan inside the Dome of the Rock: 7000 times more valuable than in any other mosque
When To Go
Take into account local holidays when arranging your itinerary. In Muslim countries, many businesses close on Fridays and during the afternoon on holidays, but are generally open in the morning. The most important event and the one most likely to complicate travel is Ramadan, the annual month-long fast during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk (most restaurants close until sundown). Shops may be open for a few hours in the morning and a short time after iftar, the breaking of the fast; government services are either closed entirely or open only in the morning. It would be rude to smoke or eat in public at this time. In Israel, most businesses and public facilities close Friday afternoons for Shabbat, the Jewish sabbath, and reopen at sundown on Saturdays. They also close for Jewish holy days, which begin at sunset on the previous day.

FarShores News Posted Nov 05.01 Devastating Meteor 'Probably Destroyed Ancient Civilizations' Scientists have found the first evidence that a devastating meteor impact in the Middle East probably triggered the mysterious collapse of civilisations more than 4,000 years ago. Studies of satellite images of southern Iraq have revealed a two-mile-wide circular depression which scientists say bears all the signs of an impact crater. If confirmed, it would point to the Middle East being struck by a meteor with the violence equivalent to hundreds of nuclear bombs. Today's crater lies on what would have been shallow sea 4,000 years ago, and any impact would have caused devastating fires and flooding. The catastrophic effect of these could explain the mystery of why so many early cultures went into sudden decline around 2300 BC. They include the demise of the Akkad culture of central Iraq, with its mysterious semi-mythological emperor Sargon; the end of the fifth dynasty of Egypt's Old Kingdom, following the building of the Great Pyramids and the sudden disappearance of hundreds of early settlements in the Holy Land. Until now, archaeologists have put forward a host of separate explanations for these events, from local wars to environmental changes. Recently, some astronomers have suggested that meteor impacts could explain such historical mysteries.

Maisels, Charles K. 1993 The Emergence of Civilization: From Hunting and Gathering to Agriculture, Cities, and the State in the Near East. London, Routledge. back to top Textbook Rationale: back to top Class Purpose The goal of this class is to develop an understanding of how and why cultures developed in the ancient Middle East using both archeological and historical sources and theory. The development and temporal sequence of cultures will be surveyed from the terminal Paleolithic to the Byzantine. More important than learning the sequences of cultures and civilizations is understanding the cultural and ecological forces that shaped some of the most important events in human cultural development. Illumination of these processes will be provided by focusing our attention to specific sites and time periods, while only briefly surveying others. Further, we will acquire an understanding of the way people lived and how the culture worked looking at: population settlement; social structure; the world of work including agriculture; animal husbandry; manufacturing; and the economy including government, trade, and prices.

The team generated the following reports: Try the following activities: Team - What the Gods Have Joined Man Has Put Asunder: The Ancient City of Miletus
The Team experiences the siege of the ancient port city of Miletus by Alexander the Great, and learns about its maritime and cultural dominance. Includes information on Thales, philosophy, geometry, Memnon, ruins and warfare. Using the same method Thales used on the Pyramids, figure out the height of your school building (or any other large object or structure) by measuring its shadow at the same time of day that your own shadow equals your own height. Discuss the geometry behind this technique, and the ancient origins of other laws of geometry. Abeja - The Many Faces of God Here in Ephesus
This article traces the history of Ephesus from its foundation through Roman times, focussing on the worship of Cybele/Artemis/Diana as the patron goddess-'til the Christians came along. It touches upon the Hittites, Ionia, the Persian Wars, Alexander the Great, and the Romans. Includes a sidebar about the seven wonders of the ancient world. This dispatch shows how cultures and traditions can combine and metamorphose over time. Ephesus was a crossroads and melting pot of the ancient world, as illustrated by the changing status of the temple. Consulting various sources (an encyclopedia, the internet, etc.) ask your students to compare Artemis, Cybelle, and Diana, the goddesses that the temple of Ephesus was dedicated to. Are they different goddesses completely, the same goddess but from different cultures? Follow up with a more general discussion about cultural fusion, perhaps using illustrations closer to home (fusion of music, food, religion, etc.)
