The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Meteorology is designed to prepare a graduate for professional employment as a meteorologist, and meets the requirements specified by the Federal meteorological agencies. A new graduate may be commissioned as a meteorological officer in the Air Force or Navy or appointed to a meteorological intern-ship in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). WORK EXPERIENCE:
  • Spring 1995 and Spring 1994: Launched radiosondes into both the pre-storm and near-storm environments during the Spring 1995 Verification of the Origin of Rotation in Tornadoes EXperiment (VORTEX). Team leader for a mobile mesonet vehicle during the 1994 VORTEX program responsible for data collection and storm observations.
  • Spring 1993: Performed independent research with Dr. C. Anderson of North Carolina State University studying the use of satellite image-derived growth rates for thunderstorm anvils as a predictor for severe weather occurrence and the associated lead times before severe weather occurs.
  • Fall 1992-Spring 1993: Developed the collaboration with Dr. A. Riordan between the National Weather Service in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and North Carolina State University where meteorology students assist forecasters during severe weather events.
  • Summer 1992: Teaching Assistant for the 1992 National Science Foundation/ National Severe Storms Laboratory Research Experience for Undergraduates Program at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma.

Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma
The program in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma was established in 1960. The first Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology at the University of Oklahoma was awarded in 1965, the first Master of Science degree in 1964, and the first Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1963. In 1981, the School of Meteorology became part of the College of Geosciences, which also includes the Dept. of Geography and the School of Geology and Geophysics. As of May 1996, a total of 482 B.S. degrees, 316 M.S. degrees, and 84 Ph.D. degrees have been awarded in meteorology. There are currently 175 undergraduates and 80 graduate students, along with 18 faculty (two of whom are George Lynn Cross Research Professors) and 16 adjunct faculty. The University of Oklahoma is the only university in Oklahoma offering both undergraduate and graduate programs in meteorology.

Atmospheric Science 103 - Introduction to Meteorology
Course Descripition:
A non-technical treatment of the fundamentals of weather and weather forecasting, geared for the general student. This course can be used to satisfy the three-semester hour interdisciplinary natural sciences general education requirement. ATMS 105 may substituted for ATMS 103 by majors. We are world leaders in providing non-degree courses for the weather enthusiast. Courses are available at three levels for anyone interested in the weather. You do not need a qualification to enrol for a course. ISN courses have been developed to meet the needs of those who enjoy the outdoor environment, whether that is offshore, on land or in the air. Although there is no GCSE or A level Meteorology, experience shows that our Level II Meteorology course is similar to the level that would be reached as part of Geography or Physics GCSE or the NVQ II standard. This is an ideal course for those who have had no formal training in Meteorology. The Level III course is similar to the level reached as part of Geography A level or the NVQ III standard. Finally, the Level IV course is similar to the level you would reach as an undergraduate.
