Kenya Kenya is often described as having everything that is beautiful in Africa within her borders. Abundant wildlife and birdlife living free; outstanding scenic beauty of the rolling savannas, the peace of the desert regions of the north, the majestic highlands and glaciated peaks of Mt Kenya; the grandeur of the Great Rift Valley and the allure of white coral beaches. Kenya overwhelms all who visit her. Time spent in this country can be one of the most rewarding travel experiences of one's life. Since gaining independence in 1963, Kenya has experienced considerable growth and prosperity relative to other developing African nations. By focusing on tourism, Kenya has been able to successfully market its national parks and beautiful coast in a way that allows visitors to experience this region of East Africa while contributing to the country's growth. Kenya offers an array of opportunities for travel, wildlife viewing, and cultural experiences. With an immense network of national parks that include a variety of terrain, Kenya arguably stands as one of the top destinations in Africa. Although Kenya lies on the equator, it boasts a variety of landscapes including a tropical coast, grassy plains, desert, and mountains. A fine example of Kenya's wildlife can be found right outside it's largest city in Nairobi National Park. In the South lies the Masai Mara Game Reserve, Kenya's most reputable reserve and Amboseli National Park, which sits at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Aberdare National Park and Samburu and Shaba National Reserve are situated in the central region, also the home of Mt. Kenya 17,058 ft, Africa's second highest mountain. The Laikipia region is home to many large ranches on a high plateau between desert and mountain in the northwest. Tsavo East and West National Parks are less frequented by visitors and lies between Nairobi and the coast. Other highlights include the Rift Valley Lakes, Meru National Park, and the Indian Ocean Coast.

by Edmore Mufema Spirituality, land and land reform in South Africa ... Rev. Rupert Hambira In 1996, Indigenous People met during the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism held in Salvador Bahia Brazil. One year later, the World Council of Churches’ Indigenous Peoples’ Programme (WCC/IPP) in cooperation with the Botswana Christian Council also held a workshop under the theme "Spirituality, Land and the Role of the Churches in the Struggle for the Indigenous Peoples’ Rights" in Gabarone. From that meeting came a call to continue building spiritual, cultural and political identities within the churches in the countries where Indigenous Peoples are located. The areas of critical concern identified were land, protection of rights under international law, preservation/promotion of culture, decision making processes, advocacy, spirituality and networking. In February 1998, some Indigenous Peoples participants who had been at the Gabarone workshop and other representatives from Africa, attended a consultation on "Land and Spirituality" in Karasjok, Norway. Here the world-wide Indigenous Peoples community exchanged ways in which their spiritualities and lands were threatened. From this sharing, ideas of cooperation and responsibilities were discussed. The Indigenous meeting and the statement of Karasjok became a strong challenge to convene in Harare to identify the critical issues affecting African Indigenous Peoples in general. Before the WCC’s eighth Assembly in Harare, "Land and Spirituality: The African Context" was the theme chosen for the workshop the same theme used in Karasjok, Norway. It showed the connectedness between the spiritualities of the Indigenous Peoples and the land on which they originated.

Its coast is lapped by the Indian Ocean and it shares the vast waters of Lake Victoria with its western neighbours. The Rift Valley and central highlands area form the backbone of the country, and this is where Kenya's scenery is at its most spectacular. The humid coastal belt includes the Tana River estuary and a string of good beaches. Western Kenya takes in the fertile fringes of Lake Victoria and some prime game parks. The vast, arid north-eastern region is where Kenya is at its wildest and most untouched by the modern world. Kenya's flora and fauna defies easy description. The vast plains of the south are dotted with flat-topped acacia trees, thorn bushes and the distinctive bottle-shaped baobab tree. On the rarified slopes of Mt Elgon and Mt Kenya, bamboo forests sprout and even higher up is the bizarre groundsel tree, with its huge cabbage-like flowers, and giant lobelias with long spikes. If you're more into fur and feathers, then head for the teeming game parks. Lions, buffalos, elephants, leopards and rhinos all cavort openly in at least two of the major parks. Endangered animals such as the black rhino are slowly making a comeback and sanctuaries for these creatures can be visited in Tsavo and Lake Nakuru national parks.

It is both a sacred and secular instrument to the Shona, Bantu, Meru, Gogo, and Soga cultures. Used to contact ancestors and tribal guardians, chase away harmful spirits, weather control, cure illness, and impart a strong life force. During the colonial period in Africa the missionaries taught that the mbira was evil and discouraged the use of the instrument, but since independence it has regained its important cultural role to the indigenous peoples of Africa.
The Mbira is musically classified in the 'plucked idiophone' group of musical instruments. It has one or more rows of metal keys or tongs mounted on a wood soundboard which is mounted on a dried gourd which acts as a resonator. It is easy to play by gently striking the ends of the keys with the thumbs. To learn more about the Mbira To find an Mbira
