Settled by Berbers in the 1st millennium A.D., the region was the center of the ancient empire of Ghana (700–1200) and later became part of the empire of Mali (14th–15th cent.). By this time the Sahara had encroached on much of Mauritania, limiting agriculture and reducing the population. In the 1440s Portuguese navigators established a fishing base, and from the 17th cent. European traders dealt in gum Arabic along the southern coast. France gained control of S Mauritania in the mid-19th cent., declared a protectorate over the region in 1903, and made it a separate colony in French West Africa in 1920, but did little to develop the economy. Nationalist political activity began after World War II, and Mauritania gained full independence in 1960.
A Muslim state was created in 1961 under Makhtar Ould Daddah as president. His rule was troubled by ethnic tensions between the Fulani and the Arab-Berber group, by economic problems aggravated by the severe drought in the Sahel, and by worker-student protests. The military deposed Ould Daddah in 1978, and military governments subsequently ruled the country.
A 1975 agreement with Spain and Morocco giving Mauritania control over the southern third of the Spanish (Western) Sahara ignited a conflict in the former colony. The Polisario Front, a pro-independence guerrilla group backed by Algeria, waged war against Mauritanian troops until 1979, when Mauritania renounced its claims to the area and signed a peace treaty with the front. Slavery was only officially abolished in 1980, and racial unrest erupted in the late 1970s and persisted into the 1980s, aggravated by government repression of black Mauritanians.

Kewri societies have a rich and varied folklore. Mail, telephone, and telegraph services are combined in the main post offices. Fewer than 6,000 telephones are in use, and administrative contact is primarily through radiotelephone. International telephonic communications are run through Paris. The media are owned or controlled by the government. A national radio network broadcasts in the prevailing languages and in French. There are also two Earth satellite stations with telecasts in French and Arabic. A daily, Ach-chaab; a fortnightly, Journal Officiel; and a bimonthly, Le Peuple, are published in the two official languages. Movie theatres are found in the main urban centres, and cercles (social, sporting clubs) provide recreational opportunities in Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, and Rosso.

'Le Grand Vide', the Big Nothing, that's what the French colonialist called Mauritania. This qualification is somewhat unjust to the country. There is, however, a lot of sand, and a lot of nothing. But Mauritania also has fascinating wildlife (birds, seals) in the Arguin Bank National Park , impressive old caravan cities like Chinguetti Ouadane or Tichit and is generally speaking a very nice place for travelling.

A combination of Islamic, French and traditional African influences, Mauritanian culture underpins society, but rarely raises its head in ostentatious ways. There is virtually no literature or theatre in Mauritania, so those looking for overt displays of 'Africanness' often leave disappointed. Traditional music, on the other hand, is unmissable and never fails to leave an impression. Characterised by a tidnit (a four-stringed lute), sometimes an ardin (harp) and usually a wailing vocalist, it can be nerve-shattering to the unaccustomed ear. The Moors' social activities often revolve around the traditional glass of Arab tea with mint. Customarily three glasses of tea will be served over about an hour. Sweet and strong, the tea has a punch to rival a strong coffee. With 99% of the population Sunni Muslim, religion provides a superficial unity between Moors and Black Africans. Race riots occurred in 1989, showing this unity to be, at best, extremely fragile. And as the brutal 1993 attack on two Catholic priests shows, there is a small but increasingly militant band of Islamic fundamentalists operating. On the whole, however, the brand of Islam is open and liberal. Traditionally nomadic, decades of drought and the growing desert has led to the disbanding of many clans and a population shift to the cities and bigger towns. Mauritania is the only country in West Africa ruled by people with a nomadic heratige.

Introduction
Mauritania isn't the sort of country that attracts tourists in their droves: it's mostly desert, entirly poor, politically unpredictable and expensive. It's also desolate. Add to that disputes, landmines or violence on the borders with Mali, Senegal and the Western Sahara region of Morocco (check a map; that doesn't leave much) and it seems like maybe a visit to Mauritania is more trouble than it's worth. Of course, it's not all a write-off, but to see more than sand outside the small, staid capital of Nouakchott (which has its fair share of sand too) requires some planning and some luck. There are some nice spots for fishing, birdwatching and even surfing along the coast and a few caravan towns in the interior that might be of interest. Otherwise, the biggest attraction Mauritania offers is the very desolation that keeps so many people away. For those with the true spirit of adventure, Mauritania is one of the least trodden spots in the world. Intrepid travellers will love Mauritania if they're excited by venturing through towns half blanketed in sand, sipping tea with nomads under their colourful tents, crossing plateaus that resemble the moon and looking at prehistoric rock drawings and ancient Saharan architecture. Even people who have lived in this 'Godforsaken place' and would never do so again agree that it's a truely exotic and unforgettable destination.
