Mathematics Standards of Learning - Kindergarten The kindergarten standards place emphasis on counting; combining, sorting, and comparing sets of objects; recognizing and describing simple patterns; and recognizing shapes and sizes of figures and objects. While learning mathematics, students will be actively engaged, using concrete materials and appropriate technologies such as calculators and computers. However, facility in the use of technology shall not be regarded as a substitute for a student's understanding of quantitative concepts and relationships or for proficiency in basic computations. Mathematics has its own language, and the acquisition of specialized vocabulary and language patterns is crucial to a student's understanding and appreciation of the subject. Students should be encouraged to use correctly the concepts, skills, symbols, and vocabulary identified in the following set of standards. Problem solving has been integrated throughout the six content strands. The development of problem-solving skills should be a major goal of the mathematics program at every grade level. Instruction in the process of problem solving will need to be integrated early and continuously into each student's mathematics education. Students must be helped to develop a wide range of skills and strategies for solving a variety of problem types. This page has been accessed 56568 times. Number and Operations Roman Numerals Process Standards: Representation and Connections This lesson plan is centered on understanding the representation of roman numerals, and in doing that it also incorporates a more multicultural math perspective. Students are able to witness how roman numerals originated and how they were utilized in other cultures. The students will also be able to see how they relate to our Arabic numbers and operations in America today. By understanding the construction of roman numerals a connection can be made to our math operations and this might allow some students to better understand Arabic numbers and operations. This lesson plan has simple manipulatives (toothpicks) that provide the students with a hands-on activity, further enhancing their learning. Clock Arithmetic: Process Standards: Representation and Connections Students learn basic counting and arithmetic skills on a number line. At the middle level the concept of clock arithmetic is introduced. This lesson allows students to become more familiar with this concept and see why this arithmetic works like it does. By using a clock to teach modular arithmetic students have a more concrete and tangible representation of the operations. They are also able to witness the distinction, and see the connection, between an infinite number line and a repeating circle. This lesson also gives many examples of different math operations done on a number line. Students will understand that not only addition can be performed, but subtraction, multiplication and division as well.

Interest Grows in Checkbook Math Lessons
Personal finance lessons are becoming popular in middle schools, and teachers say the lessons can help with basic skills and behavior. Several teachers tell Education World how they brought real-world skills into the classroom. Imagine a 13- or 14-year-old with a new apartment and $4,000 to spend. A 48-inch television or a wall of the newest compact discs might be the first purchases one imagines.
Interest Grows in Checkbook Math Lessons
Have you used "checkbook math" or a similar lesson in your classroom? Do you have a favorite activity to do with your students? Do you have any advice for teachers who might want to try a real-life math lesson? Share your thoughts on today's message board Diana Rogers, who teaches seventh and eighth graders in Carmel, New York, introduces reality right away as part of this lesson in personal finances that she teaches in the spring. All of the students are told they have to furnish the apartment with their $4,000 in savings and then get a "job" and "pay bills" for six months. Students are given checks with their names on them to pay the bills, according to Rogers. They also have to put some money in a savings account and reconcile their checkbooks every month.

MATH The perceptual skills already acquired through materials in the Sensorial Area are now laying the foundations for counting and arithmetical operations which are to be developed in the MATH CURRICULUM AREA. THE MONTESSORI MATH MATERIALS were designed to allow the child to explore a concept in the concrete form. The sequence of presentation begins with simple to more complex and from concrete to abstract. Children will progress through concepts at their own developmental rate. The materials themselves contain the pattern for presentation as well as understanding. The sequence for presentation and learning is :
    1. Concrete before Abstract.

Box 430 University of Colorado Boulder, CO 80309-0439 andrzej@cs.colorado.edu Abstract During the last 200 years, mathematics has changed radically. On the other hand, the content of mathematics taught in the elementary grades has remained virtually unchanged, causing a great discrepancy between everyday mathematics and school mathematics. 1. Mathematics education in the early years, 1800 - 2000. Many mathematics books used for educational purposes began to appear in the United States around 1800 (Sterry, 1790; Pike, 1806; Adams, 1808; Daboll, 1812; Hawney, 1813). These books contained material that was used for vocational training in arithmetic in the eighteenth century, information useful for merchants, shopkeepers, craftsmen, and artisans. The content of these books was based on several different concepts of numbers: whole numbers, common fractions taught as parts of a (fractured) whole, decimal fractions, and a variety of composite and denominate numbers. The main purposes were to teach skills in executing written algorithms, and to teach a variety of applications. The books were for teachers, and most learning took place during an apprenticeship, when a person was learning a profession.

    Tackling the Third R
Marilyn Burns shares her secrets for teaching arithmetic Contents WHEN IT COMES TO the three Rs, arithmetic can be the toughest to teach. Some teachers rely mostly on pencil-and-paper practice, believing that children learn best through repetitive exercises. If you focus on the basics, they say, students will build a solid understanding in math. Others dismiss this approach, arguing that skill-and-drill worksheets turn students off to math and do little to develop understanding. Instead, these teachers favor problem solving and hands-on activities that call for students to use skills, not just practice them.
Who is right? What's the best equation for arithmetic instruction in today's classroom?
Marilyn Burns, a teacher and one of the nation's leading math educators offers the following insights.
  • Arithmetic is as important as everjust read the draft of Standards 2000. Since I was a student, and even more since I've been a teacher, the elementary math curriculum has changed dramatically. Topics have been added such as geometry, measurement, probability, statistics, and algebraic thinking. New attention has been put on problem solving, reasoning, and communicating in math class. And calculators and computers are available in more and more classrooms.
Still, arithmetic reigns as the high-stakes topic to teach. It's front and center in

Further reading Decimals and integers - Numbers without decimal points are integers. The following are 'integers': 3, 1, 0, -126 whereas the following are all decimal numbers: 3.42, 1.07, 0.003, -126.237, 3.2e-3 The last is equivalent to 3.2 times 10 to the power -3, i.e. 0.0032. 3.2e-3 => ** 0.0032 3.2 * (10 ** -3) => ** 0.0032 Warning: POP-11 doesn't accept 3.2E-3, or .6 as decimals, as some languages do. You must have something before the decimal point, even if it is '0', and use lower-case "e" for the exponent, e.g.: 3.2e-3 or 0.6. Sometimes decimals are called 'reals'. Using -dataword- to recognise decimals Single and double decimals POP-11 also has 'double decimal' numbers. These are more accurate numbers and have the dataword "ddecimal". These take up more space in the computer, but can be used for more accurate (and slower) calculations. A decimal number expression typed in directly is interpreted as a ddecimal, not a decimal. E.g. dataword(3.4) => ** ddecimal Whereas if it is the result of an operation like addition or multiplication it will normally be a single decimal: dataword(3.4 + 0.0) => ** decimal
