Aspen Education Group provides proven, specialized programs for teens struggling with behavior, academics, and other issues.
The Alternatives The Academy at Swift River in Massachusetts has a special program in Costa Rica. Mount Bachelor Academy in Oregon offers winter sports and trips abroad. These special programs work to open teens eyes to the larger world, and the group aspect helps them develop healthy POSITIVE peer relationships. One of the oldest wilderness programs in the country is the SUWS Adolescent Youth Program, located in Idaho. They use a search-and-rescue metaphor in an outdoor experiential program that helps adolescents work through the internal conflicts and emotional obstacles that have kept them from responding to parental efforts and treatment programs elsewhere. Their commitment is to identify these blocks so that our students can begin making progress again in their lives. SUWS also has a program in North Carolina Another long-established program specializes in teens with resistant behavioral issues, including substance abuse issues if necessary.

Schools for the Gifted
The question is often asked, Are there special schools for gifted children? For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Also see our list of Early Entrance College Programs , programs specifically designed for the younger student ready for college level course work. And, don't miss this list of U.S. schools that specialize in LD students, often working well with gifted / LD students... LD Resources K-12 Schools with LD Programs, USA

About Academic Program SGH Tribute Graphics ... SIGN UP For the story by NY1, click here In 1997 Stephen G. Hoffman and Timothy Cavanaugh started The Run to Daylight Program. They had the idea of providing the players from the Queens Falcons Football Organization with the opportunity to attend some of the top boarding schools in the northeast as well as local private schools in the New York City Area. Tragically, Stephen Hoffman was among those lost in the World Trade Center disaster during the events of September 11th, 2001. Tim is now joined by another coach from the Queens Falcons program, Joseph Marino. The mission of The Run to Daylight Program is to help our inner city young men secure a top quality education not normally available to families of limited financial means. The program concentrates on finding candidates that are not just athletes but good students as well. These student-athletes are matched with schools that can offer a better education than normally found in the inner city public school system. Basically, their athletic ability helps them to achieve a quality education and opens doors to them normally reserved for more affluent families.

- Aug, 1995 Issue #35 THE STRUCTURE SPECTRUM
(A tool for matching children with the right program)
by: Lon Woodbury Adapted from the author's article appearing in Sober Times, May 1995 So your child needs something more! Once again, you have to go through the pain and confusion of making a major decision that not only will impact the rest of your child's life, but can have an influence on the life of everyone around the child. The variables inherent in this process can be overwhelming. The trick is to find a school or program which provides a quality and professional experience, and fits the needs of your child. This is complicated by the fact that most programs look good at first glance, at least in their brochure, and most will say they think they can provide exactly the experience your child needs. Just as children's needs vary widely, so does the structure offered by schools and programs vary widely. Making the right match often is crucial for success. Overkill can be just as much of a disaster as underkill. Toward the higher end of the structure spectrum are schools and programs (length of at least six months) capable of handling serious psychiatric problems, while giving a quality experience of immediate consequences upon which the child can learn and internalize how to make better decisions (staying away from illegal drugs, self-discipline, trust, etc.). These are usually JCAHO approved, which requires the ability to handle serious emotional and mental problems.

Presented at the Technical Advisory Panel Meeting on October 8, 1998 MassHealth Outreach Approach. As of September 30, 1998, some 48,000 children and 109,000 adults were enrolled in MassHealth, a 28 percent increase over a 14-month period. The success in enrollment can be attributed to the ability to mail in the application and the use of a 1-800 (toll-free) number that has served as the backbone for connecting individuals to services. In addition, Massachusetts has recently further simplified the eligibility process through:
  • Creation of a shortened application form; Use of one income level for the whole family; Use of gross, rather than net, income; Elimination of the asset test;

Timothey Weymouth
West Newton, Massachusetts
"Why the heck are you going to a boarding school?" This question, asked by my peers and mentors, haunted me throughout my ninth grade year of school. I knew I needed a change in my life, one that would take my entire world of learning to a new level. In the spring of 1988 Deerfield Academy and I chose each other. The beauty of its rural campus, strength of its teachers, breadth of its classes and extracurricular activities, and charm of my peers made Deerfield my school. I was blessed to come from a family that understood boarding schools and knew Deerfield was a "leader of the pack."
The rigor of my Deerfield experience pushed the limits of my emotional, intellectual and athletic potential. No other endeavor in my life has made such a positive impact on who I am today. My writing blossomed. My artistic bent was satisfied. I faced my fears in public speaking. I became almost fluent in Spanish. So many interesting doors burst open for me. Fundamentally, I learned my limits and how to push my comfort level. I also met truly significant people- life friends, whom I can call on any time. I had made the right choice.
The challenges I met and the successes I achieved at Deerfield served as a springboard for college and beyond. With three years at a quality boarding school under my belt, my undergraduate education went far more smoothly than it did for many of my college friends. I was well prepared to stay organized and produce quality work. I prepared to attend medical school, but something else beckoned me. In my senior year it came into focus. When it came time to choose a career, there seemed to be only one option, one that had become part of my spirit: a career in education.

http://www.jbhe.com/news_views/38_brearley_school.html
A Young Black Woman Will Lead One of the Nation's Elite Private Preparatory Schools A young black woman has been named to head the Brearley School, considered by many to be the nation's most prestigious and selective preparatory school for young women. A generation ago the nation's private preparatory schools almost without exception were lily-white. The exclusion of young blacks had an obvious secondary effect on race in higher education because these preparatory schools have always acted as prime feeder institutions to the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities. Over the past quarter-century many of the nation's preparatory schools, in common with most of the nation's selective colleges and universities, have taken major steps to diversify their student bodies. According to the latest JBHE survey of the nation's 20 highest-rated private boarding schools, blacks made up at least 4 percent of the student body at each school on the list. At five of the 20 schools blacks were more than 8 percent of the student bodies. Racial diversity has also occurred at the faculty level in private schools. According to the latest JBHE data, at seven of the 20 highest-rated private boarding schools blacks were 7 percent or more of the total faculty. This performance is far superior to that of the vast majority of the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities.

Debbie Godowsky, owner To top of story Many women who like to bake and are at home while their children are young wonder if they can turn a hobby into a business. Debbie Godowsky did. Her 11-year-old enterprise, Cookies Direct, shipped 3,200 boxes of cookies last year and grossed $85,000. Over time, it has provided enough income to send two children through college. Godowsky has made her company succeed by providing a high level of customer service, keeping personal control over the process and fighting the temptation to increase her expenses just to do more business. She started out using a card table for a desk and having orders faxed to a dry cleaner down the street.
