Aging Network Nutrition and Meal Services The Mission of Senior Nutrition Services is to improve the quality of life for older individuals through wholesome meals, nutrition education, counseling and assessment, improved socialization and referral to other appropriate services. Meals are offered in two different settings: Congregate meals are offered in more than 270 senior centers, religious facilities, housing facilities or other community sites throughout Maryland. In addition to the meals provided, meal sites offer an opportunity to meet new friends and engage in other social or health related programs including nutrition education, physical activity and health screening. During 2002, nearly 36,000 seniors received meals in congregate settings throughout Maryland. View a list of congregate settings Most congregate sites offer a hot lunch, however some congregate settings offer deli lunches, salad bars, soup and sandwiches or evening meals. Ethnic meals are being served in several areas of the State. Kosher meals are served in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Montgomery County. Korean meals are served in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel and Montgomery Counties. Montgomery County is serving Vietnamese and Chinese meals as well. Home delivered meals (also referred to as Meals on Wheels) are brought to homebound seniors with the intent of helping them to remain in their own homes for as long as possible. In addition to nutrition services, daily contact with program volunteers or staff often provides seniors with a link to additional services in their communities. More than 1,400,000 meals were delivered to seniors’ homes in 2002.

Senior Nutrition Program Montgomery County Division of Aging and Disability 3950 Ferrara Drive Wheaton, Maryland 20906-4708 The Montgomery County Nutrition program has made a difference in the lives of older persons. It is a model for programs across the nation for its ability to leverage funds, serve diverse populations, coordinate with community organizations, and provide comprehensive nutrition education. This program operates within the Aging and Disability Service of the Health and Human Services Department of county government. In 1973, Montgomery County established a nutrition program for the elderly with funding from the federal government. The program has grown steadily and now provides 295,200 congregate meals per year and 41,900 home delivered meals. The total budget for the project is $1,320,800($607,500 comes from the Older Americans Act). The project has grown due to its ability to leverage other funds. The meal contribution level averages $1.60 per congregate meal. This high contribution rate results in Montgomery County having the lowest total program cost per meal of the four large suburban counties in Maryland. The Senior Nutrition Program in Montgomery County has risen to the challenge of designing nutrition services for diverse groups. At a public hearing in 1994, Vietnamese seniors testified about their community's need for greater access to programs and services. The county now offers a Vietnamese menu in two locations. In addition, the Program serves kosher meals at three sites and Korean meals at two sites.

The Supervised Practice Program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a performance-based generalist program designed to bridge the gap between didactic education and entry level professional dietetic practice. The Department of Aging works through four divisions: Client and Community Services; Housing Services; Planning and Operations; and Program Development. The Department is aided by the Commission on Aging, and the Financial Review Committee (Code 1957, Art. 70B). COMMISSION ON AGING The Commission on Aging advises the Secretary of Aging about the needs of the elderly in Maryland and the work of the Department of Aging. The Commission's thirteen members are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor who names the chair (Code 1957, Art. 70B, sec. 3). FINANCIAL REVIEW COMMITTEE The Financial Review Committee was created in 1985 (Chapter 752, Acts of 1985). At the request of the Department of Aging, the Committee evaluates the financial condition of providers of continuing care who are experiencing financial difficulty.
