Professional marine biologists study many aspects of marine life and consider themselves to be morphologists, physiologists, cell biologist, oceanographers, or ecologists, who work with marine organisms and marine environments. Similarly, undergraduates at the University of Washington study marine biology in a number of degee programs: Botany Cell and Molecular Biology Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology ; Fisheries; Oceanography (Biological); and Zoology
Explore your options carefully! Talk with teachers, graduate students and professionals in the field. Visit places where the work is done that interests you. Read magazines, newspapers, and scientific journals (ask a librarian or course instructor for journal titles). Visit the Biology Program Office and the College of Ocean and Fishery Sciences Career Center to go through job and career information.
In the academic area, take complete sequences in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, mathematics (calculus, statistics) and physics in addition to your introductory biology. These are important tools for understanding and working in all areas of biology. Use your general education courses to gain a wider view of the world and the needs of the human species. Also, develop computer skills and strong written and oral communication skills.

Universities
Florida has ten public universities and a large number of private universities and colleges. Those listed below have certain academic programs that relate to ocean, marine or coastal studies, research or outreach. Below each university are those academic departments or sites of study that allow a student to learn more about ocean, marine or coastal degree programs or for a citizen or business to seek answers to questions. In some cases, the academic department may be totally dedicated to ocean, marine or coastal issues and in others, perhaps a group of faculty within the academic department or laboratory work in this area. Outstanding - Affordable Field Courses in Rainforest and Marine Ecology
The Rainforest and Reef Conservation Fund is a non-profit organization based in Grand Rapids, Michigan USA. Our Board of Directors includes biologists, educators and members of the business community. Over time, we have formed partnerships with organizations committed to conservation and education in nine countries. One means that we have worked to support each of their efforts is through the development of high quality and affordable RAINFOREST and MARINE ECOLOGY FIELD COURSES at each site. Presently we have programs in Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, British Columbia, Hawaii and Australia . Our FIELD COURSES take place during June, July and August, but are available at other times throughout the year upon request. Ninety-nine percent of participation fees go to the organization sponsoring each FIELD COURSE and these funds contribute directly to the development and support of their conservation and education efforts.
