Student Organizations
One of the most important things you can do at Auburn is to become involved in one or more of COSAM's student organizations. These organizations are a way in which you can learn a great deal outside the classroom environment. The following is a list of some of the benefits of participating in one of our student organizations:
  • Provide leadership opportunities Meet faculty in an informal setting Meet successful professionals already employed in your field Learn practical information about your major Have an impact on student policy in COSAM Participate in service activities with and outside the college

"Sometimes remarkable events occur in our midst," said Erle Nye, chairman of the board of regents. "Today, we're honoring these students for their heroic actions during trying circumstances. We are amazed at the courage they showed without regard to their own welfare."
When a passenger van carrying six people plunged into Offatts Bayou, Galveston during a regatta, the sailing team members rushed to the scene, where the vehicle was submerged in 12 feet of murky water colder than 60-degrees.
"Without holding a committee meeting or taking orders from anyone, these students spontaneously maneuvered their boats toward the impact point 80 feet from shore and grabbed a man who popped to the surface," said Michael Kemp, TAMUG vice president and CEO. "Learning that more people were trapped in the submerged van, the former competitors melded into a fluid rescue team and repeatedly dived to the bottom to pull the passengers from the sunken van."
TAMUG team captain Jeffrey Daigle accepted the regents' award and quipped that Kemp's description of the event was "an excellent third party rendition" of what happened.

    Nikitin Acquittal Affirmed
Russian scientist’s ordeal draws to a close; also, Ukrainian marine biologist cleared of charges.
On September 13, the Presidium of the Russian Supreme Court dismissed an attempt by the Prosecutor General to appeal the 1999 acquittal of Aleksandr Nikitin, retired Russian Navy colonel and environmental whistleblower, finally ending the legal nightmare that he has endured for over four years. Nikitin and his supporters thought that the case had ended in December 1999 when the St. Petersburg City Court acquitted Nikitin of all charges of high treason and divulging state secrets for co-authoring a report for the Norwegian-based Bellona Foundation. The report documented the environmental dangers posed by the abandoned nuclear submarines of the Russian Northern Fleet in the Kola Peninsula. The Russian Supreme Court upheld the acquittal in April, the restrictions against Nikitin were dropped, and his passport was returned. However, in July 2000, Nikitin was traveling in the United States when he learned that the Prosecutor General’s office had filed an appeal in the case. Nikitin was in San Francisco to finally receive the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize, which was awarded to him in 1997.

Marine Biology - Researcher Profile Ann Bull
Marine Biologist What is your current job and what does it entail?
I am the development coordinator for I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD), a nonprofit volunteer organization that focuses on environmental issues in and around San Diego County. As a marine biologist with a background in marine mammal rehabilitation, I can offer a unique perspective to potential donors as to why we should conserve, recycle, and preserve the environment around us. What was the key factor in your career decision?
Preserving the environment for man and animal kind has always been a priority for me. Education is the key to saving the oceans, forests, waterways, and wilderness. I want present and future generations to enjoy the beauty of dolphins and whales swimming in a pollution-free environment and the splendor of a bald eagle soaring high above a pristine forest. What do you like most about your career?

    BACKGROUND
The Institute of Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1967. At the time of the WTEC visit, this organization employed 450 persons (300 research staff and 140-150 engineers and technicians). Within the Institute there are 20 laboratories and an auxiliary services group. In addition, there are four field stations and the Far East State Marine Reserve. Two smaller research vessels support seagoing projects. In addition to the research ships, the institute conducts many dives to collect specimens and to do in situ research tasks. Most of the scientists are divers.
