Archaeology and Prehistory.
Malta has always stood at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. People crossing from north to south, or from east to west, have all left a trace on the island. The most startling of these traces is to be found in the great Neolithic Temples which on Malta and Gozo. These were built 1000 years before the Pyramids, and are the oldest stone buildings in the world. I hope that you are impressed! The construction of these buildings demonstrate a mastery of quarrying, stone working, building and engraving techniques and must be the work of a mature, confident culture. Like stone circles in the British Isles some appear to be concerned with the passage of the seasons as indicated by the position of the Sun.
Mnjandra Neolithic Temple.
To the geographer these structures are important because they indicate the presence of a very early (perhaps the earliest) civilization. We must ask the questions
  • How did these people live?
  • What was their impact on the environment?
  • How has the islands environment changed and why?

Archaeology in Malta and Gozo Some of the oldest temples known are found in Malta and Gozo. The following is a brief description;
For more details, please see list at the bottom.
  • Hagar Qim
    The original temple was subject to many alterations, but the complex presents many novelties in construction, together with carvings bearing a unique foral motif.
  • Entirely built of the soft globigerina limestone, it contains the largest single stone used in any of the Maltese temples
  • Mnajdra Temple
    can be found a short distance from Hagar Qim and is currently undergoing restoration. The Hypogeum - Paola
    This is an ancient underground monument[circa 2,400 BC], 12 metres below street level. It consists of a system of caves, passages and cubicles cut into the stone, similar to the interiors of megalithic temples. Megalithic Monuments - Tarxien
    The remains of numerous temples erected in the Fourth and Third Millennium BC are unique in the world. Stone idols, animal representations carved in relief, stone tablets, altars and screens decorated with spirals and other patterns, fire places, ornamented niches and oracular chambers enhance the attraction of these sanctuaries.
    Ghar Dalam (Cave and Museum) - Birzebbuga
    This cave is a veritable depository of semi-fossilized remains and extinct species such as dwarf elephants and hippopotami which roamed the island some 250,000 years ago, ostensibly when it was still part of the Africa land mass.

    The University of Malta's Summer School in Archaeology, now in its 8th year, provides a unique opportunity to discover, explore and study the life of our prehistoric ancestors. Extraordinary and unique megalithic temples of the Stone Age and fascinating underground tombs of the Neolithic, Punic, Roman and Early Christian ages lie scattered around the island. Indeed, Malta is the ideal place to study archaeology. The Summer School introduces participants to the theory and practice of archaeology in general and to Mediterranean and Maltese archaeology in particular. It will consist of a theoretical part explaining the general principles and methods of archaeological practice, including field archaeology. This will be followed by excavation sessions on the University's dig at Tas-Silg. The Summer School is open to all who are interested in the subject - no formal qualifications are needed. The minimum age of participants is 18. The programme is limited to a maximum of 20 participants; early registration is recommended.
