Though performances of traditional music and dance are not everyday events, there is a contemporary Divehi culture which is strong and adaptive, despite foreign influences which range from Hindi movies and Oriental martial arts to Michael Jackson and Muslim fundamentalism. Western fashions, pop music and videos are visible in the capital, but on public occasions, like the beginning and end of Ramadan, the celebrations always have a distinctly Maldivian touch. There are three daily newspapers and several magazines in the unique national language, rock bands who sing Divehi lyrics, and multi-storey buildings which echo the architecture of Maldivian island houses. A bodu beru Islam is the national religion and all Maldivians are Sunni Muslims. No other religions are permitted, though ancient beliefs survive: for example, islanders fear jinnis - evil spirits which come from the sea, land and sky. These are blamed for everything that cannot be explained by religion or science. Fish and rice are the staple foods of Maldivians with meat and chicken eaten only on special occasions. National dishes include fried fish, fish curry and fish soup. Arecanut (an oval nut chewed with betel leaf, cloves and lime) is the equivalent of an after-dinner mint. Alcohol is only available in tourist resorts. The local brew is

Internet and Amnesty International contacts result in Criminal Court charges
Maldives Culture report
Malé October 2002
Naushad Waheed with his son
Maldives artist and businessman Naushad Waheed faces a possible life sentence after admitting he was in contact with Amnesty International, contributed to an Internet discussion forum called Dhivehi Forum, and was in contact with other Maldivians who were working to change the government.
Naushad is being charged under Section 29 of the Maldivian Penal Code. He is due to appear in the Malé Criminal Court on Thursday 10 October 2002. Naushad was first arrested in December, and has been in prison or under house arrest since then. Earlier reports that Naushad was involved in the publication of Sandhaanu appear to have been incorrect. Naushad readily admits he was writing to Amnesty International and contributed to Dhivehi Forum (now defunct), but he denies that he took part in any anti-government activities, according to informed sources. While under house arrest, Naushad asked the government for an opportunity to serve the public with his artistic skills. He developed detailed plans to establish an art school.

Traditional dances and music may not be an everyday event but there are occasions where traditional music and dances are performed. Though traditional dresses are not used by present day generation there are many types of traditional dresses made for both sexes.
Like the unique geographical formation, the cultural events and ceremonials are unique according to the event that is celebrated or performed. Naming a newborn child, Bodumaloodhu (a prayer accompanied with festive meal), Eid festival and circumcision of male child are few events that take place where the taste of rich cultural 'cocktail' can be experienced. Bodu beru (big drum) performance is the best-known form of performance of traditional music and dance where females and males participate. Bandiyaa (a dance performed by woman), Thaara (dance performed by male) is among the top traditional music and dances practiced in the Maldives Islands.

What's on offer One of the last true Robinson Crusoe destinations, the Maldives are a group of over a thousand coral islands in the Indian Ocean. What to see The perfect beaches are of course the major attraction but diving is a close second. More than 60 per cent of visitors check out the islands' rich aquatic life, which includes butterfly fish, angelfish, unicorn fish, oriental sweetlips and many others. Larger marine life includes sharks, stingrays, manta rays, turtles and dolphins. Look out for A cowry shell. These shells were used across much of the world as a primitive form of international currency until the sixteenth century. Their abundance in the Maldives was one of the reasons the islands became a hub for foreign traders.

by Clifford Terry Back To This Issue's Index Subscribe Send a Letter to the Editor Rob, Annie, and I met up with Martin and the crew
of Nanou in the port of Galle, Sri Lanka, where we were heading for the Maldives archipelago. Over the last six months we had immersed ourselves in South Asian history, folklore and culture and now we hoped to follow in Thor Heyerdahl footsteps, filming a documentary film as we attempted to solve the Maldives mystery. Rob and I had met Martin some months earlier, and when I told him of our plans to film in the Maldives and Sri Lanka, he invited us to join him on his 60 foot, cutter rig yacht, Nanou . Being a photographer and filmmaker himself, he agreed to come on board as one of our sponsors. The idea was to film some of the archaeological sites uncovered by Heyerdahl in the 80's while expounding some of our own maverick theories on the origins of the Maldivians. Like Heyerdahl in his book and film of the same name, The Maldive Mystery , this was meant to tie in with the subsequent film we were doing on Sri Lanka.

On March 21-29th, 1999, eleven players of the Badminton Mammies team of Saitama prefecture had friendship matches with the Mammies team, Juniors team and "Social" team in the Republic of Maldives.
In Maldives, there are about 1,200 islands spread out on the equator in the Indian Ocean. They are trodinarily
beautiful small islands, in fact, the original meaning of Maldives is garlands. Although they haven't any special atural resources, tourism is very popular.
The population of Maldives is about 260,000. The name of the capital city is MALE. Over sixty-thousand eople live there. They import almost all of their all kinds of daily goods from Asia and Europe. Everyone in the Maldives are Moslem.
We got the good opportunity to visit the Maldives from a Japanese badminton coach called Miss Wakai, who is registered in our prefecture. At this time, she is finishing her two year coaching contract for the Japan international Corporation Agency.
One day, she sent me a letter : " there are some Mammies badminton players who are interested in playing a friendship match with Japanese". Early in July last year, I was told to encourage her ideas when I visited the Maldives. One of our goals is to promote International friendship.

Maldives Resorts in the Maldives woo tourists with promises of 'the last paradise on earth', and if your idea of paradise is a pristine tropical island with swaying palm trees, pure white beaches and brilliant turquoise lagoons, then the Maldives will not disappoint. It's also a major destination for scuba divers, who come for the fabulous coral reefs and the wealth of marine life. But it's not a place for low budget backpackers or amateur anthropologists who want to travel independently and live as the locals do. Tourism in the Maldives is carefully managed. The country's tourism master plan identifies both the underwater environment and 'the Robinson Crusoe factor' as major attractions, but these are not seen as compatible with large-scale, low budget, mass tourism. The lack of local resources makes it necessary to import virtually everything a visitor needs, from furniture to fresh vegetables, so the Maldives cannot really compete on price. The strategy has been to develop a limited number of quality resorts, each on its own uninhabited island, free from traffic, crime and crass commercialism. The Maldivian tourism strategy also aims to minimise the adverse effects of tourism on traditional Muslim communities. Tourists can make short guided visits to local fishing villages, but must then return to their resort. Most are satisfied with this glimpse of local life and culture, but to stay longer or to travel to atolls outside the tourist zone requires a good reason, a special permit, and a local person to sponsor the visitor. Most tourists come to understand the restrictions after a short visit to an accessible island - it is difficult to imagine how isolated Maldivian communities would benefit from extended stays by an uncontrolled number of tourists.
