Although ALCASE does not endorse specific publications, you may find useful information in this selection of books on mesothelioma. Alimta About the Alimta Expanded Access Program Mesothelioma is a cancer of the linings of the lungs, chest, abdomen, and the organs contained in those areas, rather than a cancer that forms in the lungs. Mesothelioma is most frequently caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals. Asbestos releases strong, microscopic fibers that may injure the protective linings surrounding the body's organs. The Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support, and Education ( ALCASE ) has had many requests to provide information about mesothelioma, resources for treatment options, and support to those dealing with mesothelioma. We hope this Web site will help to meet that need.

Daily Wine News > Current Headlines Drinking Has Little Effect on Risk of Lung Cancer, Research Finds Posted: Tuesday, January 07, 2003 By Jacob Gaffney Alcohol consumption does not appear to be related to the risk of lung cancer, according to a new study that looked at more than 9,000 people across two generations of families. The results suggest that people who drink a glass or two of alcohol a day have the same chances of developing lung cancer as nondrinkers. In previous studies, alcohol consumption has been linked to both higher and lower risks of lung cancer. The authors of this latest study, which was published in the Dec. 18, 2002, issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, speculate that these inconsistencies may be due to confounding factors. For example, drinking is sometimes done in smoky locations, such as bars, and in those cases, lung cancer could be the result of exposure to secondhand smoke rather than alcohol consumption. A team of researchers, led by Dr. Luc Djoussé of the Boston University School of Medicine, studied data from 4,265 participants in the Framingham Heart Study. That epidemiological study, which has been going on since 1948, examines the health of thousands of residents of a Massachusetts town through biennial questionnaires and physical checkups.

At Memorial Sloan-Kettering, persons with lung cancer are treated by a multidisciplinary team of experts. Overview There are two major types of primary lung cancer: non-small cell and small cell. Each affects different types of cells in the lung and grows and spreads in different ways. Not everyone who gets lung cancer has a history of smoking. If you do smoke, however, you can reduce your risk for lung cancer and the risk of those around you by stopping now. Diagnosis Physicians use several techniques to diagnose lung cancer, including imaging tests and biopsies.

Emphysema, Lung Cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease [COPD] and other breathing disorders and difficulties are what we treat in a caring atmosphere here at the Chapman Lung Center. We are your specialists in treating lung cancer and emphysema. Featuring new surgical procedures that may improve the quality of life for many patients with severe emphysema and a minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer, the Chapman Lung Center continues to strive to be at the forefront of the medical community. Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) for Lung Volume Reduction Surgery Lung Volume Reduction Surgery (LVRS) is an effective new treatment in properly selected patients with moderate to severe symptoms from emphysema. Over the past several years, numerous papers have demonstrated the benefits of LVRS in thousands of patients. For most patients, LVRS improved pulmonary function tests, relieved oxygen and steriod dependence, relieved symptoms of dyspnea and improved quality of life, with reasonable morbidity and mortality. In contrast, medical management, including pulmonary rehabilitation, has failed to improve pulmonary function tests despite decreasing oxygen requirements and increasing exercise tolerance.

Posted 3/18/2003 4:50 PM Updated 3/19/2003 6:33 PM Formula can calculate lung cancer risk The formula, published in this week's Journal of the National Cancer Institute , shows a wide variation in risk. Consider a 51-year-old woman who smoked a pack a day since she was 22 until stopping nine years ago. The formula puts her chances of getting lung cancer in the next 10 years at less than 1 in 100. Compare a 68-year-old man who smoked two packs a day since he was 18 and hasn't yet quit. He has a 1 in 7 chance of lung cancer by his 78th birthday if he keeps puffing. If he quit smoking today, the risk drops slightly, to 1 in 9. Researchers from New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center created the formula and posted a version on the center's Web site Tuesday. Doctors have used a similar model for years that calculates age, family medical history and other factors to predict a woman's risk of getting breast cancer. But for lung cancer, expected to kill 157,000 Americans this year, doctors could give only vague advice: Smoking is the chief cause; heavy smokers have the highest risk; and that risk drops with each year that passes since kicking the habit.
