Myles, Sullivan face each other in 2-day race-off
Associated Press
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. Jon Myles of Rumney, N.H., and Nick Sullivan of Oakdale, Minn., will face each other in a race-off for the final spot on the U.S. Olympic luge team. "Because the Olympics are on our home track, USA Luge has a unique opportunity to find out which athlete is faster on the Olympic track," USA Luge executive director Ron Rossi said Friday. "As a result of that advantage, the Team Selection Committee decided to use its discretionary power by calling for a race-off." Myles and Sullivan are scheduled to race three heats on both Jan. 5 and Jan. 6 in Park City, Utah. After each day of racing, in which the best two runs count, the slider with the lowest two-run combined time will be awarded 100 points. The second-place slider earns 80 points. The slider with the highest point total, after two days of racing, will be nominated for the team. The winner will join Tony Benshoof of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Adam Heidt of Northport, N.Y. on the U.S. men's singles roster.

    Photographing Olympic Sports
In fact, one of the joys (and frustrations for us old-timers) on a slope is to watch a wolf pack of fearless four-year-olds schuss by and spray snow in our faces.
What about the bobsledding? We doubt that you see much of it around your home town. So we don't cover it in this article. The same with luge. In fact, we've come to the conclusion that the luge is probably the silliest sport ever devised: Grown men and now women going 90 mph feet-first on a sled. Come on!
One tidbit about the luge, however, that raises it somewhat in our estimation: In 1905, when Einstein postulated his Special Theory of Relativity in which he performed a "mind experiment" imagining what would happen if he could ride on a beam of light (that is, travel at a speed of nearly 670 million mph) the fastest speed attained by man on earth up to that time was a little over 90 mph, and it was on a luge!
In any event, let's concentrate on how to photograph the winter sports you're more likely to find in your home area.
The first question with most winter sports is this How should you handle your camera to minimize the effect of freezing cold on its operation? We have devoted an entire article to

Georg Hackl and his boots were the talk of Nagano. (AP) Veteran competitors and first-time medalists help give the luge a compelling mix of old and new in Nagano. It takes 34 years, but the United States finally wins an Olympic luge medal when the teams of Chris Thorpe and Gordy Sheer grab the silver and Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin win the bronze in men's doubles. However, CBS SportLine staff writer Mike Lurie says the event belongs to the master: Germany's Georg Hackl, who once again proves he is luge's golden boy.

LUGE Luge and short track speed skating are the most precisely timed events of the Olympic Winter Games. The luge competition consists of three events: men's, women's and doubles. The athlete or athletes who navigates the course in the fastest total time after four singles runs or two doubles runs is the winner. Each run is timed to the nearest 1/1000th of a second, making luge one of only two Olympic sports so precisely monitored (short-track speed skating is the other). The International Luge Federation (FIL) went from 1/100th to 1/1000th of a second after a tie for the gold in the doubles competition at the 1972 Sapporo Olympics. As was the case in Sapporo, there is no tie-breaker in any of the luge events.
Interactive Extras The Fast Track Course Luge media from AP In men's and women's singles , athletes take four runs down the track. Each run counts. The four times are added, and the fastest total time determines the winner. The competition takes two days to complete (two runs per day). Men and women compete on the same track, but the women start from a position further down the course.
