Olympice Preview: Skeleton
Luge, which takes its name from the French word for sled, is one of the fastest Olympic sports, with riders exceeding 90 mph.
The action will be even faster than normal in Salt Lake City, where the Olympic Park track, which consists of 17 curves over 4,318 ft, is recognized as the fastest luge run in the world.
There are three divisions in the luge competition: men's singles, women's singles, and doubles. Luge doubles can be contested by either sex but the teams are almost always made up of two men.
The singles format for Olympic luge is unique. Instead of the usual format of two timed runs in one day, athletes make four runs down the course over two days of competition. Men and women compete on the same track, but the women start the race at a point farther down the track. The doubles competition, in which one rider lies on top of the other, uses the more traditional format. Each team makes two timed runs during the one-day competition. The team with the fastest total time is the winner.

There are four events each for men and women in short track and five events each in long track. Long track pairs two skaters at a time racing against the clock. Short track is more like a roller derby race. U.S. FORECAST: Here's a tip. If you want to impress your neighbors, start talking about Apolo Anton Ohno in the next day or two. Because, by next week, the rest of the world will have discovered him. A 19-year-old Japanese-American who was raised by his father in Seattle, Ohno is outgoing, attractive and about to be a star. He should place in all four short-track events and could even sweep gold, becoming this year's Eric Heiden or Bonnie Blair. The one drawback? He still will hear questions about accusations that he gave less than a full effort in a recent qualifying race so his friend, Shani Davis, could leapfrog another skater and make the Olympic team. American men do not look as good in the long track. Casey Fitzrandolph finished sixth in the 500 and seventh in the 1,000 at the Nagano Games. Derek Parra is a contender at 1,500.

Sessions are scheduled on a one-day, multiple-day and seasonal basis. Skeleton Imagine sliding head first with your chin just three inches above the ice and traveling nearly 60 miles per hour. The general public can experience the thrill of skeleton racing in single-day classes called Skeleton 101. Elite caliber athletes and coaches teach camp participants how to enter a banked corner, what the centrifugal force of three G's feels like and how the track is meticulously shaped and maintained. Equipment, including helmets, visors, shoulder and elbow pads, spiked shoes and sleds are provided by the Utah Olympic Park. Participants must be 13 years of age or older. The cost is $150 which includes three runs, sliding fees and all equipment. For more information, contact the Sport Services desk at (435) 658-4208 or sportservices@utaholympicpark.com. Bobsled/Luge/Skeleton Track The construction of the 15 curve and 1,335 meter (8/10ths of a mile) bobsled, skeleton and luge track took 30 months to complete at the cost of about $25 million. The milestone of 100,000 sleds rocketing down one of the fastest tracks in the world since its opening was reached in November 2002. The Utah Olympic Park hosted its first World Cup bobsled event in November 1998, and it continues to be a regular stop on the international World Cup tour in all three sliding sports. Milestones in the track's history include the groundbreaking date of June 3, 1994; completion date of December 28, 1996; and the grand opening on January 25, 1997. The first run on the track was completed by luger Jon Owen from the tourist start on January 10, 1997. The track features five start houses, known as bobsled start, skeleton start, men's start, women's start and junior start. There is also a designated on-track tourist start for a public passenger ride program. The sport of luge is timed to the thousandth (.001) of a second while bobsled and skeleton are timed to the hundredth (.01). Only track records during competition are recognized. Infrared and visible light photocells are used for timing. Other facts and figures about the track are 297,000 watts of track lighting, 62 water hydrants, 24 cameras, 49 timing points and eight scoreboards. A $1 million retractable shading system protects the course from sun and snow, reducing energy usage by 25 percent and eliminating the need to clear snow from the track.

Nutricise Although the sport is sometimes thought of as being relatively new, sled racing is actually one of the oldest of all winter sports. The word luge comes from the French word for sled. In Germany the sport is known as rodel, and it is in the alpine countries of Europe that the sport began. References to sled racing first appeared in chronicles from Norway in 1480 and the Erz Mountain area in 1552. The first international luge race took place in 1883 with 21 competitors representing seven nations, including the United States. The race was organized by hotels in the Swiss resort of Davos and took place over the 4-kilometer (2.5 mile) road from St. Wolfgang to Klosters. At the turn of the century, luge was actually governed by the International Bobsled Federation, which administered all ice-track sports. In 1953 the sport gained its own international governing body with the formation of the Federation Internationale de Luge de course (FIL), and in 1964 luge was inaugurated as an Olympic sport at the IX Winter Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria.

    Chris Thorpe
    2002 Olympic Bronze Medalist
    1998 Olympic Silver Medalist
There are very few athletes in history who can match the credentials, or longevity of slider Chris Thorpe. Now a veteran of the last four Olympics Games ('02, '98, '94, '92) Chris' trophy case includes both an Olympic Bronze Medal and an Olympic Silver Medal, not to mention a host of World Cup and National Championship hardware gathered over his seventeen year career. In all, Chris has won thrity-one international sliding medals - the most ever by an American. He's also the first American ever to win the World Cup Championship and by the way, his '98 Olympic Silver Medal was the first American Olympic Medal ever in the sport of luge! Chris' list of accomplishments goes on and on, and is full of firsts, bests, and fastests...but the one trophy that has eluded him thus far has been Olympic Gold. That's what motivates him to go on. "My first love is of the sports itself, the speed, the precision, really the challenge of competing in the most precisely timed sport in the world (luge is timed to .001 seconds). If it weren't for the passion I feel to compete, regardless of the medals, I would have long since retired. I'm just as hungry to win now as I've ever been, in fact ever more so, because now I know I can win gold."
Born in Illinois, Chris' family relocatd to Michigan when he was very young and it was there that he entered the sport of luge on natural ice tracks. Quickly showing potential, he was recruited to join the US Luge program in Lake Placid, New York. Seventeen years and two trips to the Olympic Medals podium later, Chris has become one of the sports "best-ever" and has one eye firmly fixed on a fifth trip to the Olympics in 2006. The other eye is now firmly fixed on his new born daughter Skylar (born March 13, 2002). Chris and his family now reside in Gainesville, Florida.

    http://www.texaco.com/support/olympics/docs/saltlake/sports/luge/home.html
Venue: the Luge Track at Utah Olympic Park
Luge made its debut in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria with three events men's, women's and doubles. These three events have been a part of every Olympic Winter Games since 1964. After the 1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France, the International Luge Federation (FIL) changed doubles to a mixed-gender competition. Since the ruling has been made, however, no mixed-gender teams have appeared in the Olympic Games.
In all three events, those with the fastest total time after four runs are the winners. In all cases, time is measured to .001 seconds, making luge and short track speed skating the most precisely timed events of the Olympic Winter Games. Timing was previously calculated to .01 seconds until two doubles teams tied for gold at the 1972 Olympic Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan. Ties to the thousandth of a second are permitted but are extremely rare.
For runs to be deemed legal, athletes must be in contact with the sled when they cross the timing light at the finish line. If a racer crashes on course, receives no outside assistance and still finishes with the sled unassisted, the run is counted.
    Singles
In men's and women's singles, athletes take four runs down the track. Each run counts. The four-run format is unique to the Olympic Winter Games and is designed to reward consistency, endurance and ability to withstand pressure, particularly on the second day.

Take a close look at the emblem of the XVIII Olympic Winter Games, to be held February 6 to 22 in Nagano, Japan. What do you see? A flower? A snowflake? The emblem's hexagonal shape mirrors the shape of a snowflake, an appropriate symbol for the Winter Games. The shape also resembles the flowering Alpine plant a purposeful symbol underlining the fact that Nagano emphasized environmental considerations in its staging of the Games. But a closer look reveals more! Take a look at the pictograph symbols designed to represent each of the Olympic sports that are part of the Nagano Games. Do you see a few of those symbols (and their shadows) cleverly "disguised" in the emblem? See if your students can pick out the sports represented in the emblem!
