Ninety-eight workshops were offered, ranging in computer literacy from beginners to advanced discussions on fiber and digital communication. In addition to abundant books for sale and genealogical displays of many societies, the latest of family history software was demonstrated. It was an outstanding event and surely met its goal of bringing family researchers closer to an understanding of what kind of resources are available through technology. In addition to my own exploring, I have received URLs for many valuable sites from our "Surfing Primos." You will see many websites in this issue.

Veterans Roll Call
"A band of sisters and brothers in a circle of trust"
Add Your Name to the Roll Call
During the 1960's we were civil rights workers in the Southern Freedom Movement. In the years since, we've all gone our various ways in geography and politics, but regardless of where we are now most of us consider the Movement to be one of the defining experiences of our lives. We believe that the bonds forged in danger, struggle, defeat, and victory neither rust, nor wither with age. And like veterans of other wars, we wonder where old comrades have wandered and how they have fared. If you were active with CORE, NAACP, SCLC, SNCC , or other Southern Freedom Movement organization during the 1960s, please add your name to the veterans roll call. And if the spirit moves, add a memorial tribute for one who has moved on.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies estimate that there are between 35 to 50 serial killers on the loose in the Uunited States. Other estimates put the number of killers close to 500. In either case officials expect these numbers to continue their dramatic rise. According to a 1984 FBI Behavioral Unit study of serial murder, serial killing had climbed to "an almost epidemic proportion." It is believed that presently there are up to 6,000 people a year dying in the hands of a serial killer. Although a predominantly North American activity, serial killing is on the rise in all points of the globe. Particularly, with shifts in the geopolitical world order, serial killing has become part of the national landscape in South Africa and the Soviet Union. A predominantly white phenomenon, there has been a dramatic increase in the amount of black serial killers. Even historically peaceful places like Costa Rica now have a serial killer. The following is a list of all active and unsolved cases of serial slaughter.

    The Regions of Mississippi
Mississippi is divided into four geographic regions. These four regions are further divided into several sub-regions that are defined by culture that has been directly influenced by the geology of the land. The four main regions and their sub-regions are:
    • The Gulf Coast
    • The Coastal Terrace
    • The Barrier Islands
    • The Southern Wooded Prairies
    • The Pine Belt
    • The Central Prairie
    • The Delta
    • The Mississippi-Yazoo River Basin
    • The Loess Bluffs
    • The Northern Highlands
    • The Red Clay Hills
    • The Flatwoods
    • The Pontotoc Ridge
    • The Black Prairie
    • The Northeastern Hills
These four regions each have their own history and pattern of settlement. Because of this, they each have their own cultural identities; some say they even have their own linguistic dialect. Even religious affiliation is different among these regions. And yet, the people of these regions fiercely identify as Mississippians.
    The Gulf Coast
    The Coastal Terrace
    The Barrier Islands
The Barrier Islands lie some 10 to 20 miles offshore. These islands consist of sand dunes that barely break the waves of the sea. They are generally only a half mile to a mile wide and several miles long. Marshy lagoons support diverse and delicate wildlife in the interior of these islands. The islands serve an important geological function. They protect the mainland from the ravages of sea weather, sparing the mainland the brunt of the frequent hurricanes that make landfall here. On the inland side of one of these islands – Ship Island – the LeMoyne brothers set anchor and rowed ashore to found the first settlement of the Lousiana colony. The islands are generally uninhabitated except for tourists, sun-worshippers, and sportsmen who arrive by boat for daylong excursions.

SEARCHES FOR "THE SEVEN CITIES OF CIBOLA"
THE ACCOUNT BY REUBEN GOLD THWAITES
In 1513, a hundred and seven years before the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Balboa scaled the continental backbone at Darien and unfurled the flag of Spain by the waters of the Pacific. With wondrous zeal did Spanish explorers beat up and down the western shore of the Gulf of Mexico, seeking for an opening through. Cortez had no sooner secured possession of Mexico, after his frightful slaughter of the Aztecs, than he began pushing out to the west and northwest—along the "upper coasts of the South Sea"—in search of the strait which Montezuma told him existed. It is unlikely that Montezuma's knowledge of North American geography was much greater than that of his conqueror. But in every age and land aborigines have first ascertained what visiting strangers most sought, whether it be gold or waterways, and assured them that somewhere beyond the neighboring horizon these objects were to be found in plenty. Spanish, French, and English have each in their turn chased American rainbows that existed only in the brains of imaginative tribesmen who had little other thought than a childish desire to gratify their guests. It was about the year 1530 when the Spaniards in Mexico first received word, through an itinerant Monk, Marcos de Niza, of certain powerful semi-civilized tribes dwelling some six hundred miles north of the capital of the Aztecs. These strange people were said to possess in great store domestic utensils and ornaments made of gold and silver; to be massed in seven large cities composed of houses built with stone; and to be proficient in many of the arts of the Europeans. The search for "the seven cities of Cibola," as these reputed communities came to be called by the Spaniards, was at once begun.

    Flow needs fixity
    Malcolm McCullough
[we've also published Malcolm McCulloughs' article that he wrote for the Archis special Flow-issue: Digital Ground: Fixity, Flow and Engagement with Context
But wait a second, for an important message.
Hi! You appear to walking past our shop. You should come in for just five minutes. We know what you like.
This session has been focused on design in context. If you have been thinking about this at all yourself, then you might let me ask you three questions.
First, what is the difference between ubiquitous computing and situated computing?
To help unpack these questions, it may help to use analogies from long ago and far away.. That way the metaphor stays clear.
Upon learning the topic of this conference, my first image was of the Mississippi, a river whose flow is some twenty times that of the Rhine. Here the metaphor is of crossovers. Places emerge at crossovers between infrastructures. Trade in symbols tends to have counterparts in physical life, like stockyards. Interactions in one channel get interesting when they have effects in some other channel. What works about Amazon is that it makes something happen on a UPS truck. Anyway, this is the heart of the matter: Flow needs fixity, like a river needs riverbanks. Intentionally fixed settings, also known as architecture, provide a necessary context for Flow.
