Media and Issues : School Uniforms
Views mixed on matching outfits: OPINIONS HARDLY UNIFORM
Talk about a woolly issue.
When Cherokee County school district officials sent surveys seeking parents' and teachers' feelings about mandatory uniforms, a 20 percent response rate was expected. But 96 percent of teachers and 49 percent of parents sent their opinions back, three-fourths with written comments.
"Ninety-six percent of teacher surveys were returned - that's unbelievable," said Superintendent Frank Petruzielo. "We can't even get that many to return their benefits paperwork."
The survey showed that 58 percent of parents and 68 percent of teachers favor such a policy for elementary children, but some Board of Education members said the issue still is not clear cut.
New board member Janet Flint has made the study of uniforms a priority, and the board last month sent about 26,000 surveys to parents and 1,300 to teachers.
The board is scheduled to discuss the issue at a work session that begins at 5:30 p.m. today in the media center at Canton Elementary.
If the board approves a mandatory policy for all elementary schools, it would be the first of its kind in metro Atlanta. A handful of individual public schools have uniform policies.

What Does Your Boss Think About You? By Debra Lau 9/1/2002
Features > SLJ's survey reveals principals' lack of knowledge about the role of school librarians Of course, not all bosses are like Baltzer. School Library Journal recently surveyed 242 principals across the nation to find out how they perceive your role in the library media center. Although many school librarians complain they don't get the recognition they deserve, eight out of ten of the principals surveyed say they strongly believe the media center plays a positive role in the overall value of the school. But when asked to back up that statement, only 47 percent say there's a direct link between an effective media center and increased student achievement, and just 41 percent say the school library has a positive impact on students' standardized test scores.

Chippewa Middle School In St. Paul, Minnesota Wins 2002 National Engineers Week Future City Competition WASHINGTON, February 20 A city of the future "Apricus" designed by students from Chippewa Middle School in St. Paul, Minnesota has won the tenth annual National Engineers Week Future City Competition™. Students Matthias Chan, Jo Jackson, and Alex Wrobel teamed up with their teacher, Nancy Roussin, and volunteer mentor, Stefan Gantert, a civil engineer at SEH Incorporated. Apricus is a Latin word meaning "a sunny place." Each zone in the city contains a unique feature for example, in the residential area, each block includes a pond and a park area. Apricus maintains a self-sufficient system in its power, water, and waste management. The city's high tech industries include Mars research, medical and science centers, and Hovercraft wind technology. A recent development in transportation is the Laser Line, a high speed light rail system. Apricus has several farms, surrounded by green space. One of the crops grown is alfalfa, which is processed and used as biodiesel fuel. Winning teams from 27 regional competitions held in January participated in the not-for-profit competition that took place February 19 and 20 at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. More than 30,000 middle school students from 950 schools participated nationwide.
